XCL XXVII Matchday 6
Five group games gone, surely the gaps would be widely spread out now between the potential monsters of the competition, the lucky hopefuls edging through in second place and the also rans prepared to fall at the first hurdle..? No of course not, this is the last group matchday of the series, the home of some pretty whacky last day shenanigans in the past. I recall the time when FC Ballbreakers were shocked after being humiliated in the same group from which Adrenochrome went on to win the XCL, there was the time Ursvik and Skeninge progressed after a titanic last day scrap on the final matchday a couple of seasons ago and then last season where Nös IK were hammered unruly and dropped from 1st to 3rd in the standings. Yes the final matchday can be a day of salvation, a day where everything does just right – but it can also be a day of destruction, snatching the exit from the doors of the second round. Here I’ll go through the different shenanigans that besotted this season’s last remaining hopefuls, edging to sneak into the second round through the back door.

Group A

Group A standings before kickoff:

Realgalacticos – 11 points, 7 GD
Fianna fishermen – 7 points, -2 GD
Magico Parma – 6 points, -3 GD
Modest FC – 3 points, -2 GD

Modest FC (52.527 – James.) vs Magico Parma (74.150 – Semme_88)
Fianna fishermen (63.628 – Dochawkes) vs Realgalacticos (76.369 – RealGalacticos)

The press were frantic with excitement before the final games between these two sides and it was about a team who already had their XCL futures sorted. Realgalacticos were going through and there were suggestions he could throw his game against the fishermen to hand the fishermen a way through to the next round, the fishermen being weaker on paper than the other side in contention for the next round – Magico Parma. For Parma they could only hope this wasn’t the case and they lined up with an ultra strong 442, mimicking their opposition who did the same. Signs pointed towards the scandalous at the midgard Arena though, the fishermen unsurprisingly stored the midfield with five playing a 352 while the galacticos went with a 343 away from home, a formation rarely used by a visiting team.

The first minute set the tone for how this evening was going to pan out, straight from the kickoff the fishermen surged forward, Calvin Froggatt lavishing in the space put before him by a defence all out sea before driving his shot past Iwaki in goal. Such is their reliance on senior players, the galacticos only had 2 juniors of which to call from, still it didn’t make much of a difference, just six minutes in and Ieroklis Dilberis shot home a second from again hardly any pressure at all. A further five minutes past and it was three-nil, Georgi Kovalev this time the profiteer from more neglectful duties in the galacticos backline. The face said it all from Semme meanwhile at Parma watching his side discouraged by the groans of the away faithful and it was only getting worse, the fishermen soon had themselves a fourth inside just FIFTEEN minutes, Froggatt heading home Kovalev’s cross.

Heads dropped at the Modest Arena, all around Parma fans sat motionless knowing their XCL dreams would soon be over and the distraction became so diverse that Rafael Manuel had the luxury of bounding past the challenges and slotting beneath Hugeanu to give Modest the lead in that game! The news was great though for the fishermen who were revelling in delight that all this was culminating in an easy passage to the 2nd round for them. The biggest drop off in the match had just been experienced – eight whole minutes without a goal – but they soon appeased their fans when Juande Navas scored goal number five. I doubt Iwaki had visions of conceding half a dozen goals in the first half hour of a football match even if the board of directors at galacticos headquarters did but he was again unable to keep out a strong Kovalev strike to make it six-nil and that’s when all the action settled down.

The halftime whistle was greeted with ironic cheers at the midgard, mixed opinions there with some visiting fans were pleased with the tactics displayed by their scheming manager, most were sick with rage about having to spend money to come to England and see their side get well and truly tanked. The Sweden-Romania divide seems to have been severed once more, not that it was any use to Parma right now who just had to concentrate on giving their fans one last effort to crown the XCL outing. As the action reached a crucifying low at the midgard, the galacticos funnily enough not too interested in clawing back a six goal deficit, it was up to Parma to show some humbleness, some modesty of their own like their proud opposition, but it didn’t come until the 87th minute when, after dominating the half, Timothy Sims finally rescued a point for Parma with a stunning freekick finish.

Full time:

Modest FC 1-1 Magico Parma
Fianna fishermen 6-0 Realgalacticos

Final Standings:

Realgalacticos – 11 points, 1 GD
Fianna fishermen – 10 points, 4 GD

Magico Parma – 7 points, -3 GD
Modest FC – 4 points, -2 GD

The Parma management team were awash with envy post-match, furious that the galacticos could commit what to them seemed like an obscene gesture to rid them of the competition but in earnest they applauded their fans and shook hands with the opposition after the match. To be fair this competition wasn’t a great one for Parma, they didn’t show enough skill to look like proven winners and did indeed lose three times. James. meanwhile must be pleased with how his side conducted themselves throughout the group stages, they lost less times than Parma and held every side they played at least once, superb character imposed by the Xpert Leaguers.

The big news was with the top teams though, the fishermen through and you can’t say they didn’t deserve it, they’d done fantastically well throughout the group stages and it certainly wasn’t their fault all this has been drawn under a contentious line. The galacticos though have come under siege from both flattering praise and stark criticism, some believe the galacticos coach was well within his rights to approach the final game however he liked (well, a large yet significant part of the Romanian community anyway!) while others weren’t too impressed by this new Romanian-conspiracy-gate. Blu3red who is of course the prodigal son of the Romanian x11 empire was less than impressed by the galacticos’ behaviour here – more to do with his tactics of deliberately seeking defeat rather than the choice of younger players - and his words have been echoed by other members, James. even added his own witty comeuppance to the ordeal. It’s an ordeal that will probably run and run and has two flip sides about it but the telling thing is both the galacticos and the fishermen are through; no amount of arguing is ever going to change that.

Group B

Group B standings before kickoff:

Dream Pilots – 10 points, 5 GD
Eagle Army FC – 9 points, 4 GD
Hellmoppers FC – 6 points, -2 GD
FC Vasaparken – 4 points, -7 GD

Dream Pilots (70.244 – SuperSprint) vs Eagle Army FC (72.391 – Gazfraz)
FC Vasaparken (77.984 – Vilmerito) vs Hellmoppers FC (63.942 – Gordons19)

After the alien mutiny that gripped KMX the other week when they somehow managed to score some goals in an XCL game, it seems the XCL is being overrun by alien encounters this week. The case of the dodgy tactics is now being followed by the case of the missing manager, Gordons19 was nowhere to be seen before kickoff and it was left to his assistant to coordinate the tactics for Hellmoppers’ crunch tie against Vasaparken and given they weren’t out the running yet, it was amazing Gordons19 chose now to organize an unexpected vacation.

This must’ve suited Gazfraz who had set a 352 for the Pilots to conquer (you can now view SuperSprint’s MOTW interview on the front page and after giving it a read the other day I recommend anyone to give it a read themselves), the Pilots opted for a 442 not that it bothered them what they did since they were through anyway. In the other game it was 352 vs 352 so another midfield battle there and without further ado, let the battles commence!

So as it stood EAFC would be in the next round but they weren’t going to take any chances and were easily the better side in the first half of their game against the Pilots. The Pilots were looking subdued for the first time in the competition so far, not doing the Norwegian contingent any heart favours and after 29 minutes Sean Davids finally grabbed a goal for EAFC, a deserved strike and a great finish to boot, a swift hush fell upon the AF Arena. However four minutes later and somewhat against the run of play, Dream Pilots equalized! Okay it wasn’t in the prettiest of fashion, a low cross was bundled home into his own net by Luis Gilberto, a handy equalizer to maintain top spot for the Pilots. At half time it was one all here while in the other game there hadn’t even been a chance let alone a goal scored and we were as we were before the matches had started, EAFC able to subside a three point gap to their chasers in third place.

A dream start to the second half occurred... and it was EAFC who struck this gold pot, Lenny Leonard bustling into the area before shooting home from all of six yards, a good finish from the hefty giant. Soon EAFC’s worries would all sink like the titanic/bin laden... Vasaparken started the second half tremendously well against the Hellmoppers and fired in a quickfire double in the first ten minutes of the half, Love Lodegård first shooting home under pressure from a steel defence before heading in Wennerberg’s cross to make it two-nil and effectively end all dealings within this group. Vasaparken went on to dominate and win that game while things weren’t quite as straightforward in Norway, the EAFC goal seemed to have awoken Dream Pilots from their slumbers and they started to string together the passes which makes them such an eye-catching football team. Cometh the minute cometh the man, on 74 minutes Jukka-Pekka Öörni scored his – get this – SIXTH goal of his side’s XCL campaign to tie the scores at two all. And thanks to yet another divine contribution by Jukka, his side held on to record the draw which established them as group winners for the next stage.

Full Time:

Dream Pilots 2-2 Eagle Army FC
FC Vasaparken 2-0 Hellmoppers FC

Final Standings:

Dream Pilots - 11 points, 5 GD
Eagle Army FC – 10 points, 4 GD

FC Vasaparken – 7 points, -5 GD
Hellmoppers FC – 6 points, -4 GD

Well in that last day scramble Hellmoppers actually drop a place to the bottom rather than gain one but by Gordons19’s own admission, setting up for this game slipped his aging mindset but then – why bother his side are embroiled in the closest run Hattrick League for quite a while, surely that takes priority over slim XCL hopes. Vasaparken’s first convincing point of the contest come miles too late, they still conjured third place somehow but they were less than impressive throughout the group stages. So residing in the next round come EAFC – another English manager through of Gazfraz whose side have put up some good displays so far in the competition but it’s Dream Pilots’ very own SuperSprint whose caught the eye, very assured performance from then – there’s every chance they could be the dark horses to the crown in this competition.

Group C

Group C standings before kickoff:

Angered Ghettostars – 13 points, 10 GD
Athletico Llamedos – 8 points, 0 GD

Mirandela Gorilas – 4 points, -4 GD
Bad Habits – 2 points, -6 GD

Bad Habits (57.822 – Soso_lucky) vs Mirandela Gorilas (62.030 – Theacher)
Athletico Llamedos (71.787 – Cyprus) vs Angered Ghettostars (72.478 – MagnusGbg)

Absolute dead rubber fixtures these two, we knew the ins and outs of this group so we basically had here the two champions and the two basements going head to head in glorified friendly games. It was an all 352 show between Llamedos and Ghettostars although both sides did include their best players – although both opted to go very low risk in terms of committing themselves, probably sensible given the occasion. Meanwhile in the other game Bad Habits went 541 to accommodate as many youths as possible while also given them the experience to help channel their skills while the Gorilas went 442 but also included a couple of youngsters as they looked to finish their XCL campaign on a high.

An injury to Ronny Bruckner in the first ten minutes of Habits’ clash vs Gorilas did nothing to please Soso_lucky who can ill afford injuries to key players in such a meaningless fixture and this rattled Habits to the extent they considered two minutes later, Weatherall floating in a freekick for Mohammed Benboukber to cushion in the opener. The Gorilas did own most the play in the first half but they were soon pegged back against the run of play again, Kieron Motson finely heading home a corner to make it one each. Before the half was out though the Gorilas retook the lead, Michael Lundell pouncing on a lazy mistake to drill home the goal which made it 1-2! What was happening in the other game I hear you ask (undoubtedly :P)? Well errr... nothing.

Things did start to happen in the other game after the break though, and all good for the Llamedos. Sebastien Fogby guided home a corner to make it 1-0 and then Aslak Øhrn made it two with a hurried finish. Josué Pais’ own goal won Llamedos the day, exposing a certain Arsenal out of the Ghettostars, sure they can dominate but do they have that cutting edge and even when they’re not on top can they still win? Anyway enough of that for now, there was still some more action but it was in the other game as Benboukber scored his second goal of the game to seal the points for Theacher’s men.

Full Time:

Bad Habits 1-3 Mirandela Gorilas
Athletico Llamedos 3-0 Angered Ghettostars

Final Standings:

Angered Ghettostars – 13 points, 7 GD
Athletico Llamedos – 11 points, 3 GD

Mirandela Gorilas – 7 points, -2 GD
Bad Habits – 2 points, -8 GD

Nothing much to see here I’m afraid, the Gorilas didn’t make up the effort to keep the group alive early enough and Bad Habits were long gone, long ago. The Ghettostars look sensational, this the only time they’ve not performed at their best but 13 points is a terrific achievement and they’ll be formidable for any opposition in the second round – as a Golden Leaguer I’m more than excited about that :D. As for the Llamedos, they seemed to haul their bones across the line although in the end it was rather easy come to think of it and Cyprus is one of the best managers on the game as represented by his manager ranking, if anyone can perform a miracle with a side not expected to do very much it’s him and the Llamedos will be feared come round two.

Group D

Group D standings before kickoff:

Högsbo United – 13 points, 12 GD
Club Buenos Aries – 8 points, 2 GD
Ricohs Roar – 7 points, -2 GD
The Magic – 0 points, -12 GD

The Magic (54.322 – AriGold) vs Club Buenos Aries (68.727 – Everton1977ace)
Ricohs Roar (64.573 - : ÖSK) vs Högsbo United (80.361 – RDS)

A lot of issues here, firstly can The Magic score a point? Well against CBA who aren’t assured of a second round place, perhaps that’s a lot to ask for but they’d sure aim for that. Can Ricohs Roar overhaul Buenos Aries? It’s a lot to ask but they were certainly up for it too, CBA themselves had to make certain of their progression through to round two while Högsbo haven’t been beaten in modern day XCL times, would they hold this record even though they are playing for pride only. There was talk before the game, likewise with the galacticos, that Högsbo might want to make life a little trickier for Buenos Aries by mixing a few things against Ricohs Roar but those rumours were put to bed quite quickly, even if they did decide to shift a few allrounders out of their natural positions.

Identical formations at the Amway Center, the Australian basketball outfit went for a 451 while their opponents did the exact same so that didn’t prepare me for the excitement of a lot of goals. Two Swedish managers, two 352’s at Savannna – that too failed to surprise me. I’m not sure what Högsbo were doing at the start of this match but they were quickly swamped after just four minutes of this one, Alexandru Beceru slipping in Nigel van Ams for the game’s first goal to give Ricohs Roar the lead – and more crucially – the coveted second spot in the Group D table, yikes! They couldn’t could they? Just as they were daring to dream though a foul was called at the slick Amway center, sadly for Roar and the Magic it was a penalty to the Argentines. Buddy Itz stepped up for Buenos Aries and... calmly swept the ball into the corner, 1-0 to Buenos Aries and they reclaimed second spot in the group. That was to be Itz’s last telling action of the game though, an injury forcing him off but it didn’t hamper Buenos Aries who were in complete control against the Magic. Ricohs Roar for some reason had decided to turn super-human in a game which required a super-human effort to leapfrog Buenos Aries and Nigel van Ams netted his second on half an hour with a composed effort. Nine minutes later and we were in hattrick Heaven, van Ams scuttling through a weary Högsbo defence and finishing past Lövskog, 3-0 to Ricohs Roar – who’d have thought it.

Unfortunately even despite occupying the best result of the group stages so far, it wouldn’t be enough to see Roar through, they needed the Magic to rob Buenos Aries of the three points to see themselves through but Buenos Aries were in no mood to roll over to the aging Super Leaguers. Retirement homes beckon for many of these players and their goalkeeper Maurice Isabey might’ve taken a shortcut there after picking up an unrecoverable injury in the second half to be replaced by Gusten Bäck. This is the second time the Magic have been forced into withdrawing their goalkeeper from proceedings in the XCL groups, RR needed though for the Magic to worry about grabbing an equalizer. They lost so much of their momentum listening out for updates that they were only half interested when Högsbo’s Stu Preston delightfully and delicately curled in a freekick in the dying seconds to claw a goal back for the Champions. A minute later and Ricohs Roar were put out their misery, Dale Victory headed in a cross for Buenos Aries to give them a two goal lead the Magic could only dream of resurfacing and at the full time whistle, the two heavyweights of the Group were bounding on.

Full Time:

The Magic 0-2 Club Buenos Aries
Ricohs Roar 3-1 Högsbo United

Final Standings:

Högsbo United – 13 points, 10 GD
Club Buenos Aries – 11 points, 4 GD

Ricohs Roar – 10 points, 0 GD
The Magic – 0 points, -14 GD

An XCL to forget for the Magic, comprehensively beaten in every game more or less, the future looks bleak for that old side unless they make changes and fast. A massive commiserations to Ricohs Roar though who to me feel like the biggest casualty of the Groups, nothing was expected of them but boy did they harry the other two sides right up to the flag and to score 10 points and still not go through is incredibly harsh. Still, the other two sides did a professional job, Everton and RDS can look forward to the second stage knowing those little scares are done with, both sides have been touted as contenders for the title, will one of them go all the way though?

Group E

Group E standings before kickoff:

RIO – 9 points, 4 GD
KBM MXL Xperteleven – 7 points, 1 GD
Gr8est Team – 6 points, 0 GD
New Handyman II – 2 points, -5 GD

KBM MXL Xperteleven (68.824 – Miziler) vs Gr8est Team (60.978 – Gr8Florin)
New Handyman II (54.120 – HKD) vs RIO (71.563 – Andyman90)

Oh who cares about the important business, absolutely brilliant from HKD who decided to sod a proper gameplan, he shoved all his youth into his line-up and went 343 for an all-out-attack slog for the last game having already seen his side eliminated from the contest, love it! Sadly RIO were a bit more boring, going 451 and playing a full-strength side, boooo! Anyway to the important issues ;) and it’s a straight shootout between KMX and Gr8est Team for the honour of the second round, Gr8est team had to win as anything else would result in KMX going through, they thought the best way to achieve this would be with a 352 while KMX proudly stood by the 451 which has worked so well for them (and boringly for us) in the competition so far!

As was probably expected, the game that exploded into life was the one that had little meaning at all to the overall results but it was RIO who nabbed the early lead, Richard Vie hitting an insurmountable half volley high over Naves who stood poignantly as the ball swished into the top left corner. However, NHII’s plan seemed to be coming to fruition and got its rewards in sexy style, Diego Biasi blazing a freekick like an arch up over the wall and down towards the bottom corner from all of thirty yards with the goalkeeper misjudging the flight of the ball, NHII were level! Soon it was the other game making waves, after a fine first half display KMX took a deserved lead from the head of Vlad Timisan, stretching to make contact with a pesky delivery but somehow diverting the ball home. Back to the PAK where RIO were on top and soon grasped their second lead of the afternoon, Levap Devden flicking Vie’s cross into the side of the gaping goal. Then we must rush back to KMX who, on the very stroke of half time, were awarded a penalty thanks to yet more sloppy defending. Görgen Stenhammar took the honours and he fired it into the corner to give KMX a two goal lead – Gr8est team coming back from two goals down? Huh, not likely!

Still, Gr8est team were given an almighty kick up the bum by their manager at the break because after the break they were a changed team, finding newfound confidence out of nothing and were finally able to stop the heat wave of attacking bearing down on their goal whilst creating a bit of magic themselves. Then on 69 minutes they won a corner, Luka Modric floated it in and Ronaldo slammed home the header to reduce the arrears to one in the match and two for the second round. Two minutes later and with the away crowd firmly on their backs now, Benjamin Coppinger squeezed an unstoppable strike into the top corner to make it two each, hang on – could Gr8est Team do it? While KMX were picking themselves up from the carnage left by such attacking optimism, NHII were busy picking the ball out of the net again as Devden leered in to make it three with a pristine header. Enough of that match though, over in Malaysia it was still 2-2 and KMX were using all their natural instincts to cling onto the point needed to see themselves through... and in the end did just enough to embrace the second round – phew!

Full Time:

KBM MXL Xperteleven 2-2 Gr8est Team
New Handyman II 1-3 RIO

Final Standings:

RIO – 12 points, 6 GD
KBM MXL Xperteleven - 8 points, 1 GD

Gr8est Team – 7 points, 0 GD
New Handyman II – 2 points, -7 GD

A late ding dong did nothing to change things here though, KMX doing just enough to withhold their second round spot. For NHII it’s an ungracious exit, even at this late stage HKD was still making remarks to whoever would listen about the unfairness and the luck and negativity of the opposition to sit back and settle for draws, some of it’s understandable but then that’s the name of the game. Poor Dream League, not only do they have to contend with Ricohs Roar’s dramatic exit but they miss out by the slimmest of margins again with Gr8est Team, so unfortunate. The lucky teams are RIO and KMX then and here’s a fact to savour: this is the first time in XCL modern day history where a group has two sides going through with both of them being unbeaten, who’d have thought it, so well done RIO and KMX.

Group F

Group F standings before kickoff:

B.S.R. FC – 9 points, 3 GD
Fists of FISO – 8 points, 2 GD
A.S. Feleacu – 7 points, 0 GD
RAD United FCB – 4 points, -5 GD

B.S.R. FC (55.449 – DJ_Mourinho) vs Fists of FISO (73.367 – Cfcrule69)
A.S. Feleacu (60.303 – Rapidistii) vs RAD United FCB (52.371 – Raduccu)

Okay we had a lot yet to settle here, three spots yet only two teams could fill them so one unfortunate soul would miss out. Nervous clouds meanwhile lingered over the game at O Campo, there was every chance United could field a joke side and give Feleacu an easy three points which would make the other match a winner takes all game, wow! And indeed United did field a joke side, well their youths with development being the predominant thought I’m sure, they went 352 but this development could certainly affect the standings here as Feleacu went 433. In the other game FoF were going 451, quite a risk if they need a win while B.S.R. went 442, goodness know what was going through their manager’s mind in preparation for this clash pre-match.

And it was a nightmare start for anyone who isn’t Romanian as Feleacu powered into a goal lead in the very first minute, Vilgot Starrin’s cross being expertly headed home by Tadeu Farias. This game seemed to go hand in hand with the other one in group A, while the game between the two ‘leaders’ was petering out into a crawl, this was full of life and Starrin quickly got on the end of a cross himself to make it two-nil. It was quite funny really because United were actually playing rather well, they just couldn’t find the net while Feleacu were scoring goals like London buses, wait all group stage for not many and then they all came at once with Rudi Barth knocking home goal number three. Then it was four! Mark Alcott cutting inside before unleashing a piledriver high into the net so not only were Feleacu now in the top two but they topped the group and B.S.R and FoF were reeling.

The half time whistle was met by a chorus of cheers at Prundaria and now aware of what was going on there, both B.S.R. and FoF set about grabbing the goal which would hopefully confirm their place in the final sixteen. It didn’t look like it was gonna come but both could afford a small smile as United finally got on the scoreboard in the other game through Mihalache Nitescu’s finish. The action was precipitating duller there though and soon all eyes turned to the action at O Campo, could FoF grab that goal to send them through, would B.S.R. get a goal of their own or could B.S.R. hold on even to send FoF out. The match ticked by and then on 83 minutes, with FoF fully committed in attacking movements, Perry Spiggs bamboozled his way into a shooting position and crashed a humdinger of a shot into the top right corner to all but seal B.S.R.’s place in the next round. And ten minutes later it was certain although not without a pitiful decision from Al Reddy to try and spoil the home side’s party by showing Shane Grant a second yellow and therefore red card, the action coming far too late to make any influence on the final outcome.

Full Time:

B.S.R. FC 1-0 Fists of FISO
A.S. Feleacu 4-1 RAD United FCB

Final Standings:

B.S.R. FC - 12 points, 4 GD
A.S. Feleacu - 10 points, 3 GD

Fists of FISO - 8 points, 1 GD
RAD United FCB - 4 points, -8 GD

Well well, firstly I’m sure United have involved being involved in such a topsy-turvy group with plenty of goals, sadly more than double the amount conceded than scored but they can leave with a slight smile after a rough ride in the groups. However they were arguably favourites to progress along with the other casualties Fists of FISO who looked certain to make it after racing away with six points in the first two games. However a baron slum since and a passion to not lose rather than win has seem them be pipped at the post by Feleacu and B.S.R. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about ‘pesky Romanians’ after United helped Feleacu in a sort of Romanian alliance thing by not selecting their most senior players but then, who would pass on a free gift of youth experience and they did give Feleacu a royal match, they just failed to take their chances. What B.S.R. and Feleacu can deliver in the next round I don’t know, it certainly makes for interesting viewing though!

Group G

Group G standings before kickoff:

CCCP – 9 points, 4 GD
Cormorans F.C. – 9 points, -2 GD
PSG1 – 7 points, 3 GD
OnePiece – 4 points, -5 GD

Cormorans F.C. (78.614 – Maurosenssimi) vs PSG1 (62.438 -Wlodek_k)
CCCP (78.586 – Yuran) vs OnePiece (72.099 – Wiguel)

Only a monumental goal difference blunder would deny CCCP a place in the next round rendering their match against OnePiece as virtually meaningless because OnePiece were unlikely to be following a goalscoring masterclass now their tirade in the competition is over. So it was basically a question of could PSG knock Cormorans off their perch or does Romania rule yet again in the XCL, this time over Poland, in preparation for the next stage. It was gonna be a 442 classic in the CCCP-OnePiece game whereas in the other game we had another 352 vs 451 - exciting times!

So the game kicked off and I think the most surprising thing possible to witness would be a goal for OnePiece very early on, so boy was it a shock when Paul Briggs slid the ball past Dodson to open the account for OnePiece. It certainly caught the punters by surprise but straight away after this CCCP set about making amends for such a lacklustre start and they were back on terms on the half hour when one to watch for the future – Valentin Muntyan – prodded the ball home to a rapturous applause from the home faithful. The action slowed there while it sped up at the Birds Nest where Cormorans had enjoyed all the first half action and found themselves a goal to the good nine minutes before the break, Mathéus Ferraz heading home under pressure from the flailing arms of the PSG goalkeeper.

The first half ended with Cormorans atop the group ahead the belligerent CCCP who were making waves against OnePiece and well clear of the subdued PSG1 who let’s remember need to win to stay in the competition. However it just wasn’t going well for PSG1 who ironically along with OnePiece – won the opening two fixture against these two sides, it shows just how much the times have changed since then. Wilbur Heskey exercised Cormorans’ lead on 64 minutes with a belter from range and the stage look set for CCCP and Cormorans to emerge victorious. CCCP though were chasing top spot and they got it back with thirteen minutes to go, Kolosov throwing himself at a cross to give CCCP their first lead of the game, one they’d keep for the entirety. In injury time of the other game Denis Ilascu piled icing sugar onto the cake with a party piece third but Cormorans would’ve had to score a further four goals to deprive CCCP of top spot.

Full Time:

Cormorans F.C. 3-0 PSG1
CCCP 2-1 OnePiece

Final Standings:

CCCP – 12 points, 5 GD
Cormorans F.C. – 12 points, 1 GD

PSG1 – 7 points, 0 GD
OnePiece – 4 points, -6 GD

So in the end the top two coax through in flying colours but let’s not forget the impression the other two put on the competition, OnePiece unfortunately couldn’t contain the high standards they set themselves after the first match while PSG’s campaign of two halves sadly didn’t end in cheers for them but Wlodek certainly lit up the competition for future Polish managers to grace the great stage. We’ll see more Romania in the next heat with Cormorans on their way through and they seem to be in the form of their life, they’ve already defended their Ultimate League crown and will be heralded the first (probably) team to do the Elite Division without losing a game, stunning stuff from Cormorans who most certainly have a chance of lifting the XCL. As do their Scandinavian counterparts, Yuran’s CCCP side look both brilliant and shockingly bad on differing occasions but they too are making mincemeat of their xpert league – the Master League – this season and after a decent enough display in the group stages, look ready to take on just about anybody!

Huge Pythons (66.605 – RichardFenn) vs Barcelona of Sweden (55.933 – Kautsky)
Racing Forstäppan (58.862 – Van_Helsing) vs Vikingarnas BK (56.454 – V00peter)

RichardFenn probably hasn’t been involved with such a vast group of Swedes since he quit his job at IKEA International, his side would not be involved so vigorously in this matchday though as his side had booked their place in the next round weeks ago it seems. So, Racing would join them in the next round if they avoided defeat, if not then complications with goal difference and what have you would decide which side would be going through with the Pythons. Didn’t expect Racing to go for a draw and unsurprisingly they opted for a 442, stay clear of cautiousness the message there while Vikingarnas – needing a big win to oust Racing out the top two – lined up with a 442 of their own. Barcelona of Sweden would also require a few goals to ignite their dreams of making the cut and they went for it too, good to see some positivity with a 433 cooking in the ranks. Fenn was wise to this and unsurprisingly went 451 to cover it but contrary to popular belief, fielded quite a strong line-up, puzzling to say the least in what could’ve been a DV grabbing game.

Maybe they just wanted an easier passage to the latter stages, every point counts of course given the next round is seeded and boy did they give BoS a hard time in the first half of this fixture, not letting the tiki-taka system have any freedom to roam large and after a half of patience, grabbed the lead through Randall Blake’s jab from close range and suddenly Barcelona’s hopes looked bleak to call it nicely. In the other game there was little happening too, Racing happy to just control proceedings on their own terms and they went in level which was all they needed to do, Vikingarnas needed a miracle!

I’ve often wondered why Vikingarnas don’t just rename themselves ‘Asagud Athletic’ surely it would be more apt for the club but anyway, they emerged from the tunnel and were soon back on the defensive as Racing’s fluidity took over again. It took a long time in coming but Racing finally got the lead they’d been knocking on the door for so long in the entirety of the match, Garth Sant rising highest to head home an innocuous delivery to edge Racing ahead. With Racing seemingly through it was all pride at stake as all four teams battled away but the final goal of the evening was a second from Randall Blake, probably the first brace of goals he’s ever scored after a great late freekick secured the points for the Pythons!

Full Time:

Huge Pythons 2-0 Barcelona of Sweden
Racing Forstäppan 1-0 Vikingarnas BK

Final Standings:

Huge Pythons – 14 points, 8 GD
Racing Forstäppan – 10 points, 3 GD

Vikingarnas BK – 4 points, -4 GD
Barcelona of Sweden – 4 points, -7 GD

Would you Adam and Eve it? Through all the strengths, forms, through the good and the bad manager, through the glitz and the glamour and the team that have recorded the most points in the group stages are Huge Pythons, one of the weakest to make it to the knockouts and with a manager that’s not even ranked in the top five coaches of the 32 coaches that started proceedings. Absolutely fantastic from RichardFenn and the Huge Pythons making it 2/2 for the Master League into the next round. Out bow Barcelona of Sweden and Vikingarnas, neither of which were the least bit convincing in the competition while Racing complete the sixteen from the Xtreme. Also, just like Group F, for now the second time ever the two top teams go through without losing a single game between them, brilliant winning/drawing skills.

The thing you’re probably awaiting more than ever is the draw for the next round? Well...

KBM MXL Xperteleven (16th seed – second in Group E) vs Huge Pythons (1st seed – first in Group H)
Racing Forstäppan (15th seed – second in Group H) vs Högsbo United (2nd seed – first in Group D)
A.S. Feleacu (14th seed – second in Group F) vs Angered Ghettostars (3rd seed – first in Group C)
Fianna fishermen (13th seed – second in group A) vs RIO (4th seed – first in Group E)
Eagle Army FC (12th seed – second in group B) vs CCCP (5th seed – first in Group G)
Athletico Llamedos (11th seed – second in group C) vs B.S.R. FC (6th seed – first in Group F)
Club Buenos Aries (10th seed – second in Group D) vs Dream Pilots (7th seed – first in Group B)
Cormorans F.C. (9th seed – second in Group G) vs Realgalacticos (8th seed – first in Group A)

(Ties to be played on the 17th and 24th of August)

So thus wraps up the last group matchday of the competition, a thrilling competition so far and good luck to all the above teams in the next round. I’d also like to conclude by saying I fully appreciate all the mails of well wishes and praise to the articles, it’s always great to get such raving reviews and I thank every member that takes the time to read these articles and also to the thirty-two teams most importantly of all as without them there’d simply be nothing to write :D, over and out.
