XCL XXXI Matchday Three and Four
The double-headers are upon us! The two matches which can make and break a team’s season, here I make the rundown of the double headers and we’ll see who’s looking pretty and who’s looking ugly after those games.

Group A

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Midgar Meteors 2 2 0 0 3-0 3 6
2nd Damocles 2 1 0 1 4-3 1 3
3rd The Legacy of Darren 2 1 0 1 1-2 -1 3
4th Major BB 2 0 0 2 2-5 -3 0

Gameweek Three

The Legacy of Darren (Francass – Hattrick League) 2-2 Damocles (Thunderbroom – Ultimate League)

These two were lying astern before we reached this stage having won one, lost one of their opening two fixtures in the group so far. Last week Francass watched his side get outplayed by Major BB and still come away with a flukey win but this week it seemed like he’d got more of a grip on his side who played brilliantly in the first half and took the lead through Kearney Hartnell nine minutes before the break with a header. Riled, Damocles came out fighting after the break, roared on by the small pocket of Irish fans to the right of the goal they were attacking and they were soon back on terms after a mistake by a defender allowed Andreas Bådsgård to get ahead of him and force a header home. Damocles were bossing matters now and it wasn’t long until they’d completed the turnaround, Bådsgård again proving a handful in the air and he simply couldn’t be handled from set pieces, beating his marker to head home Damocles’ second. However Damocles then decided to take their foot off the gas, big mistake, with just three minutes left TLoD were afforded one final chance converted by Steve Dolby to rescue a point the home side simple shouldn’t have been allowed on their second half showing. Huge let off for TLoD but a daunting prospect lies in store next week when they must get something out of their trip to Ireland if they want to stay in contention for a place in round two, you’d feel.

Midgar Meteors (Roberto11x – Euro League) 0-1 Major BB (Abergem – League of Champs)

Major BB must be wondering just how they have no points after domination on a frightening scale last week only to lose at home by a sneaky goal at the end TLoD forward, Kearney Hartnell. They went into this one knowing lose and they could just about forget their XCL dreams for this season and concentrate solely on domestic matters. Here though it was almost like they’d given up already, the Meteors, already on two wins of course, were itching to make it three from three and really create daylight between themselves and the rest of the group. The majority of this game was Midgar versus Amit Apsheh in the Major BB goal who was working miracles to keep the scoreline blank. Eventually the breakthrough came... but it was Major BB who got it! Bernt-Olof Boork rounded the goalkeeper and tapped home to grab the game’s only goal and do to the Meteors what TLoD did to them the previous week. For Major BB they’ll see this as justice being done, I doubt the Meteors will see it that way though who must now contend with a Major BB revitalised in confidence next week looking to draw level with the Meteors in the group which seems a crazy idea given how far the gap seemed to be between them heading into this one...

Gameweek Four

Damocles 2-3 The Legacy of Darren

Ever since Francass took the reins at TLoD he’s gone from four leaf clover to the number seven but his luck really would have to be in to get anything away at the daunting prospect of Damocles. This was a real chance for TB’s men to put themselves within touching distance of the next round with a win here but they started sloppily and fell behind at the break thanks to a Julio Vaz Leal goal midway through the first half. Then it was as if they hit the self0destruct button, Costy Oniceanu drifted past his marker to head TLoD in front on 52 minutes and then Costy punished more costly mistakes in the Damocles back line, using his power and assertion to head a third goal in to leave the home fans stunned! Back came Damocles though like a ferret up a drainpipe; Bådsgård and Gimenez reduced the arrears to one with a five minute double-salvo but they couldn’t find an equalizing goal in the last twenty minutes leaving TLoD with a miracle three points AND they now leapfrog Damocles in the group standings, oh my word.

Major BB 2-0 Midgar Meteors

Football’s a funny old game, having been cheated out of at least three points in their opening two fixtures, Major BB decided to go into last week’s encounter more relaxed and amazingly that helped them to a smash and grab victory. All of a sudden this game was massive for them as they had decided to reinvigorate their XCL hopes. Roberto was unhappy at his team’s wasteful finishing last week and it could cost them here after failing to put their chances away early on. And indeed it did, the game was going to be all about profligacy and the Major BB forwards finally brought their A-game with them. Gretar Gunleifsson, the Icelandic holding striker headed Major BB in front shortly before the hour mark and then made sure of the points five minutes before the finish with a cute strike.

Standings after the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st The Legacy of Darren 4 2 1 1 6-6 0 7
2nd Major BB 4 2 0 2 5-5 0 6
3rd Midgar Meteors 4 2 0 2 3-3 0 6
4th Damocles 4 1 1 2 8-8 0 4

That’s what the double-headers can do for you, the top two before these double-headers are now the bottom two coming out of them. This is probably the most exciting group of the lot in terms of closeness, just look at the goal differences if you want to cite further proof of that!

Group B

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Tug4Zone Elite 2 1 1 0 3-2 1 4
2nd Zacgold FC 2 1 0 1 2-1 1 3
3rd Unwell FC 2 1 0 1 3-3 0 3
4th Club Buenos Aries 2 0 1 1 0-2 -2 1

Gameweek Three

Club Buenos Aries (G3r – Power League) 2-0 Unwell FC (Alecky – Xpert International)

I personally can’t see how they’re going to manage playing 343 throughout the competition, particularly against sides with the calibre of these Power League warriors, and with Bradley Hili missing from the back, Unwell’s resistance could well prove shortlived in this encounter. And so it proved. Club Buenos Aries haven’t won yet in the competition but the perennial big stage underachievers would have no better chance than this. Unwell were wound and wound like a merry-go-round but couldn’t hold on and after the home side dominated from start to end, Rinor Devolli grabbed both goals from the bench in a routine 2-0 victory for the hosts. “Why didn’t you start me” was the message played out to the bench after a clinical display from the substitute striker, this might not be the only selection dilemma G3r faces in XCL warfare but for now, three points which they could make six, this time next week.

Tug4Zon3 Elite (Pingasoares – Final League) 3-0 Zacgold FC (CRaPoLoGy – Dream League)

All hands on the pump for Zacgold here, it wasn’t difficult to determine their strategy from these double-headers by going for the 541 straight away here, holding out away from home the obvious option for the uppy-downy team. Their defence performed splendidly in the first half here too, affording Elite very little time on the ball and rebuffing them in the first half at every opportunity to take a respectable 0-0 with them into the break. How CRaPoLoGy wished football matches only lasted 45 minutes... A few tactical changes from the Elite combined with some tiring Zacgold players was the ideal formula to see Elite run out three-nil winners in the second half. Burkinshaw knocked in the first on the break, the second was plonked home from close range by... Burkinshaw and the third goal was scored by... oh yes that man again, Burkinshaw, the prolific striker capping a brilliant second half performance with a hattrick. He can breathe easily about his starting place, particularly after his strike-partner, Moreiro, cast the only black cloud on an otherwise faultless Elite second half performance after picking up his second yellow card for dissent in the 93rd minute with the game already won; stupid, stupid boy.

Gameweek Four

Unwell FC 3-0 Club Buenos Aries

This is where we see whether last week’s victory was a paper-over-the-cracks one for CBA or whether they’re the real deal under G3r after a less than impressive start to XCL matters. Interestingly enough Rinor Devolli was again consigned to the bench and interestingly enough Club Buenos Aries made a right hash of the first half here conceding twice through Brian Ahlstrand and Gustaf Felixsson both netting after defensive failings. In contrast, Unwell were playing their same 343 formation as last time and were still without revered hero, Bradley Hili at the back. They were making mincemeat of Buenos Aries though, running out three-nil winners after a second half goal from Terence Squire rounding out a dominant victory. Have Unwell risen again from the ashes?

Zacgold FC 2-1 Tug4Zon3 Elite

The Elite have been one of the better performers in the competition to date, getting on without fuss and collecting seven points from their first three matches and you had them down as favourites against a hit-and-mass Zacgold side who seem to be as reliable as predicting the English weather in regards to their football results. Would we see golden Zacgold or dreadful Zacgold this afternoon? It appeared to be the latter when Burkinshaw stole a whole two yards on his marker to head the Elite ahead on 13 minutes. Or maybe the fact it was thirteen minutes would prove to curtail all of the Elite’s luck. They were lucky to survive ‘til halftime in the lead but sacrificed it early in the first half when Joey Santiago shot home from close range after fine build up play. Weirdly just three minutes later with his side bossing things all over the park, Garth Soley decided to dive into a shocking challenge on the halfway line on Elite’s Guiseppe Moreiro and rightfully earnt himself an early bath. Even weirder though was this seemed to serve Zacgold as an influence more than a hindrance. They lost none of their rhythm and with seven minutes to play, a deflection led its way out to Maciej Patkowski, the substitute, who rifled home a winner to consign the Elite to their first XCL defeat of the campaign.

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Tug4Zon3 Elite 4 2 1 1 7-4 3 7
2nd Unwell FC 4 2 0 2 6-5 1 6
3rd Zacgold FC 4 2 0 2 4-5 -1 6
4th Club Buenos Aries 4 1 1 2 2-5 -3 4

Until that late Zacgold goal, this was looking like the Elite were in firm control but now, like Group A, it’s anyone’s guess. With two games to go, it’s as tight as Wenger’s purse strings.

Group C

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Samba Juniors 2 1 1 0 3-1 2 4
2nd Generic F,C. 2 1 1 0 2-1 1 3
3rd Red Storm 2 1 0 1 2-1 1 3
4th Bananer i Pyjamas 2 0 0 2 0-4 -4 0

Gameweek Three

Bananer i Pyjamas (X-Jimmy-x – Xtreme League) 2-0 Generic FC (Squarehead – Classic League)

All of a sudden we’ve gone from the determined Generic team to the youthful Generic team; some of their lads were young enough to be the offspring of some of the guys they were playing with in the Generic lineup. Can’t really say the Xtreme Leaguers are the oldest outfit themselves, a trait common in Xtreme League sides (think Luton). They were however, plenty old enough to teach the young’uns a lesson here on home soil in a passing display which would have the Brazilians weep. Valdemar Artebrant scored the first midway through the first half, a sublime long range effort from the crowd-pleaser to have the home fans in full voice. Birger Akare made sure of the points eleven minutes from time, his goal giving BiP their first points of the campaign and a look in at that second qualification spot, just maybe.

Samba Juniors (Emanuel.Correia – Hattrick League) 3-1 Red Storm (Becks287 – Master League)

I feel somewhat sorry for Red Storm, they faced a Generic side on a day where Generic were in the mood for winning and now had a double header with the champions who are looking to ensure progression to round two quickly. This could be a completely demoralizing journey for Red Storm... or maybe not, Tim Blomstrand shutting me up with a brilliant header to stun both me and the home fans to put the visitors one up, crikey! On the rocks is how the Juniors are best setup though, they thrive under pressure and despite going in at the break one down, weren’t that way too long after it. David Luisão heading in a Ron Irons cross and then the same player grabbed his and the Juniors’ second with another header on 73 minutes. The win was rubber-stamped with, guess who, yes Mr Charnley firing home a freekick seven minutes before the end to restore natural order in the group. Should next week culminate in wins for both the Juniors and Generic, Samba Juniors will be in the hat for round two.

Gameweek Four

Red Storm 2-0 Samba Juniors

They gave the Juniors a scare in Portugal before Emanuel’s men came back fighting, how would the Juniors weather the storm back in Nottingham though? Predictably they were winning the possession stakes against a weaker side in the Red Storm... but more crucially was that in the determination stakes, Red Storm were winning hands down. Becks set his side out to really attack the Juniors and they did just that, all throughout the first half and their pressure told when Matt Easter felt only able to divert the ball past his own goalkeeper when a low ball was crossed to put the Storm ahead! Twice in two weeks, could they hold on this time? Forget hanging on, the sky was the limit for the hosts who had the better in the second half and scored a sensational second in the 74th minute, Bruno Einarsson proving their could just be life on mars with a beautifully guided finish. Samba are in no way guaranteed a second round place regardless of their stature...

Generic F.C. 2-0 Bananer i Pyjamas

The Pyjamas will have been happy to have gotten off the mark last week but this week were up against Generic whose competition gameplan appears to be play the youths away and crank up the pressure with their big-name players at home. It’s definitely a tactic worth noting if Generic’s performances are anything to go by, Frenchman Devillard, elegantly glancing in at the near post after Potocianu’s short delivery. BiP raised their level in the second half, playing far more up the field and causing the Generic defence various problems. Unfortunately it also made them susceptible at the back and after a half of frustration, Generic put the stamp – or rather head – on a sour away day for BiP. Young striker Fryxell crossed for Andervad to glance home the clinching goal and maintain Generic’s second position in the group.

Standings after the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Samba Juniors 4 2 1 1 6-4 2 7
2nd Generic F.C. 4 2 1 1 4-3 1 7
3rd Red Storm 4 2 0 2 5-4 1 6
4th Bananer i Pyjamas 4 1 0 3 2-6 -4 3

Another close group, granted BiP can’t lose either of their last two games or they’ll be out the competition but it’s very close between the top three with Red Storm doing themselves a real favour with the return favour victory on the Juniors who no longer look like home and dry qualifiers from this group. And unless BiP defeat Red Storm and the Generic-Juniors game isn’t a stalemate, no-one will have qualified from this group next week either.

Group D

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Hugs Pythons 2 2 0 0 4-2 2 6
2nd Gainesville Gators 2 1 0 1 1-1 0 3
3rd Heroes of Kongming 2 0 1 1 2-3 -1 1
4th South Hooligans 2 0 1 1 0-1 -1 1

Gameweek Three

South Hooligans (Sommers – Dream League) 2-4 Huge Pythons (Luke_pompey1 – Master League)

Can’t imagine this was a match Sommers needed right now, not with his team’s current predicament and I’m sure the visitors definitely smelt champions’ blood prior to kickoff here. Indeed they did, just five minutes it took Leighton Lipscombe to idle his way into a shooting position and drill home to give the visitors and early advantage. The Hooligans aren’t champions for nothing though, renowned for their never-say-die attitude they were level midway through the half through Harold Bentley, captain fantastic lashing home to grab yet another goal for himself in Hooligan colours. The visitors accepted this invitation for a fight and Lipscombe added his second shortly before the break but again they were pegged back this time through their own sloppiness at the award of a penalty after Darby was clumsily nudged over. Larry Mordelius fired it home and at the break this match was evenly poised at two apiece. Having had enough of playing games though, the Pythons immediately accelerated into destructive mode, captain Mika Witt gave them their third lead and Randall Blake randomly meandered forward before shooting exquisitely past Spooner. A rare home day blues for the experienced goalie in a day he let in four, the Hooligans’ campaign is already looking forlorn whereas the Pythons have now won three from three and could secure their passage to the next round, next week where a home win would confirm this.

Heroes of Kongming (Marcool – Super League) 0-0 Gainesville Gators (Dantte – Xtreme League)

A win was dearly needed here if the Heroes were to seriously put a potential second round date for the Gators in doubt as well as to gain the psychological edge in this double-header. Psychology was definitely order of the day here, the Gators were goading the Heroes into committing men forward, the Heroes duly obliged but couldn’t find a breakthrough on the Gators goal. They were still the better team though as the Gators barely got to the Heroes goal to even try and find some joy out of it. Still the better side doesn’t always win and in this case, the Gators will probably think a point feels like a win here, they keep a two point gap going into next week’s home tie.

Gameweek Four

Gainesville Gators 0-3 Heroes of Kongming

The Gators were quite poor last week but still escaped with a draw and will be hoping to take full advantage of that here as they welcome winless Heroes of Kongming to their place. But any thoughts of a rollover win could’ve been quickly forgotten after an abject first half performance from the lacklustre gators. In just six first half minutes; Jun Yi Sha and Kai Wen Hou doubled their sides goal stock so far in the competition with headed finishes. The Gators had to vastly improve in the second half – but didn’t and Marcool’s side romped to victory. Kai Wen Hou scored his second of the goal, firing home from eighteen yards after Zammit’s pull-back to ensure the Heroes were well and truly laughing themselves back into contention. The Gators’ early campaign XCL form seems to be more of a flash in the pan than anything and they’re not beneath the Heroes in the table.

Huge Pythons 1-2 South Hooligans

Win here and the Pythons would qualify, and given they were up against a South Hooligans side who look to be in the XCL abyss after some poor performances in the competition of late and after the Pythons demolished the Hooligans last week, this seemed more than likely. They were caught cold in this clash though, they might’ve had the physical edge on their opponents but giving set pieces away is a problem, whichever team you give them away though and they were completely exposed eleven minutes into this one, Marcelo Libergetti getting one high enough to beat the wall and dip just in time to land beautifully into the top left corner with Lyons in the Pythons goal, rooted. This bonkers matchday took another twist when Hooligans even managed to increase their lead through Sean Sapiano, heading home a lofted cross. Back came the Pythons who halved the deficit on the hour mark through Sean Sapiano’s own freekick effort but it wasn’t enough to stave off the Hooligans who defended gallantly in the closing moments here to record their own first win of the campaign and send one of the last remaining XCL 100% records crashing to its knees. The Pythons are forced to wait at least another week to secure qualification.

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Huge Pythons 4 3 0 1 9-6 3 9
2nd Heroes of Kongming 4 1 2 1 5-3 2 5
3rd South Hooligans 4 1 1 2 4-6 -2 4
4th Gainesville Gators 4 1 1 2 1-4 -3 4

Although not yet qualified, the Pythons look a stone’s throw away and anything but a defeat against the Heroes next week will seal it. But look at how congested it is between the other three, anyone’s game yet.

Group E

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st KBM Whitsunday 2 2 0 0 4-1 3 6
2nd Setback SC 2 1 0 1 5-5 0 3
3rd Pubispower 2 0 1 1 3-4 1 1
4th True Blues 2 0 1 1 0-2 -2 1

Gameweek Three

KBM Whitsunday (ShadowsDT – Super League) 3-2 Pubispower (Maxpeko – Euro League)

ShadowsDT went into the record-books recently for two consecutive MOTW’s, the only manager in X11 history to ever achieve this feat. He’d need all this collective achievement and managerial ability to defeat Pubispower who despite their sluggish start, are still a formidable opponent to any side. Fresh from last week’s goalfest, Pubispower needed to avoid defeat here and win at least one match in these double-headers to guarantee them a decent chance of making the next round but stuttered to a costly start here when they gave away a penalty with just four minutes of the first half remaining, an opportunity Janne Jeansson was only too willing to take. This penalty seemed to have won the game for Whitsunday with it remaining 1-0 up to the 80th minute when Thommy Stafford scored a freekick to make it 2-0 to the hosts and this time confirm the victory... or so they thought, instead it kick-started a frantic last ten minutes. Just five minutes later Nolberto Salillas reduced the deficit to one with a cutely executed lob and then amazingly two minutes later Eugene Griffin beautifully crossed the ball to Eddie Nightingale who crashed home the equalizer, 2-2! And there was still time left for a winner, both went for it but it was the home side who got it through Jeansson heading home from a few yards to finish a fantastic game in style. Pubispower are again locked in the game of the round, and yet again are on the losing side, something would suggest their defence may need a little tweaking.

Setback SC (Soccerrules – Golden League) 5-1 True Blues (Terror – Major League)

After last week’s crazy win, Setback will have been full of confidence for this game, not that True Blues cared, a 343 for the boys in blue, what a gamble..! As expected though, it wasn’t the right approach to take here, Stenhammar set up Jan-Olof Parson for the opening goal after two minutes and from then one, Setback didn’t look back. Arnold Mann scored the second on 16 minutes and even before halftime, the score was three after a second from Mann on the counter. After the break True Blues did initially reduce the gap with a John Morrison but it was a scant breather for the visitors who were immediately re-bombarded from Setback. Stenhammar scored the fourth goal on 82 minutes and the man-of-the-match midfielder scooped a hattrick of assists when he set up Jon Mahony for the game’s sixth goal with four minutes to go. A fantastic win for Setback who now look reasonably comfortable in second in the group but there’s no doubting they were made to look good by a poor True Blues showing.

Gameweek Four

Pubispower 2-2 KBM Whitsunday

This is my favourite group without doubt and it’s not hard to see why as nothing normal seems to function; 4-3, 3-3, 3-2 and 5-1 goalfests already, these four teams have treated us so far in the competition. Pubispower didn’t want to disappoint us here either, quickly getting going in this game and Robert Zarychta gave them a first half lead with a bullet header. It lasted all of ten minutes though, Whitsunday had been very average in the first half but still got back into it from a Roc Colsa drive straight into the roof of the net. Whitsunday’s manager ShadowsDT was back-to-back MOTW winner prior to this game (an interview you can now read on the Daily front page thanks to Celtic’s tremendous work) but his side wasn’t matching his ambition. Still though they took the lead in the second half, Thommy Stafford’s freekick had too much on it for Mulligan in the Pubispower goal and its goals like these which make you think, if only Pubispower had a defence... From then on it was all one way traffic bearing down on the Whitsunday goal, KBM were so close to qualification... but were pegged back on 71 minutes thanks to Harald Thiede’s powerful header. Pubispower wouldn’t leave Whitsunday alone either, like a cat with a mouse firmly in its grasp but they just couldn’t make the killer scratch and the mouse got away unscathed. A draw, a recurring feeling for Maxpeko who must be fed up of his team getting robbed you’d imagine, KBM now had to wait on the result of the other clash to determine whether they’d done enough to go through...

True Blues 3-3 Setback SC

Setback knew they too could go through if they defeated True Blues and Pubispower failed to win against Whitsunday (which we now know the result of). They’ve come back terrifically after their home defeat on the opening day to KBM and they took their good form into this one too, thoroughly outplaying True Blues in the first half and gaining their rewards when Stenhammar applied the finishing touch to a flowing counter-attacking move. A fiery message was delivered by Terror at the break in a bid to revitalise his players but Setback wouldn’t give in and Benny Fred gave them a deserved two goal lead. They came back fighting though did True Blues and Julian Karlström got them back into things with a cleverly taken goal on the turn. They were wasting too many chances though in a game they couldn’t lose and with seven minutes left Setback sealed the win, Arnold Mann getting ahead of his man to plant home the third goal, True Blues only had themselves to blame. Not that Setback will mind, with news flooding through that Whitsunday were holding Pubispower, their second round path looked sealed. True Blues though weren’t done, conjuring up a late fight back with two minutes to play John Morrison danced into the penalty area and smashed the ball past Bain to make it 2-3 and then incredibly deep, deep into stoppage time, Diarra played a delightful ball into Svenson who coolly lobbed Bain to grab True Blues a late, deserved point and keep this group alive for at least another week!

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st KBM Whitsunday 4 3 1 0 9-5 4 10
2nd Setback SC 4 2 1 1 13-9 4 7
3rd Pubispower 4 0 2 2 7-9 -2 2
4th True Blues 4 0 2 2 4-10 -6 2

So, Whitsunday are through to the next round, our first representatives who will DEFINITELY be there. Setback would’ve followed them but for an injury time leveller and so they must wait at least another week where they host Pubispower whose XCL future also lies on the line. True Blues and Pubispower may have to work together in order to ensure one of them deprives Setback of a second round place if that eventuality is to happen.

4th Mechanix Tigers 2 0 1 1 1-6 -5 1

Gameweek Three

Mechanix Tigers (Xmechanix – Pro League) 2-3 KBM Kaki Bola Malaysia (Zulz_legend – Classic League)

It’s possible this is one of the most important games in KKBM’s history. The Tigers don’t look like they’re going to make the next round and they managed to scour a 1-1 draw against Stiinta in the group’s opening clash so a win for KKBM would be massive in their bid to qualify for the next round. They very quickly accelerated into action here thanks to one man, Rosdi Talib. The cultured defender and freekick prowess scored his first dead ball goal just before the break and then midway through the second half, curled one fantastically round Salillas (yeah two with that unusual surname :p) in the Tigers goal to make it two. But the Tigers came back pounding, their own freekick specialist Ruben Garzon made it 1-2 and then unbelievably with seven minutes left in true Pubispower style, Cesaro Parrado levelled the scores up at two each. KKBM were reeling, they’d let a two goal lead slip and their XCL hopes were threatening to terminate in front of them. But then in injury time one last dogged attack ended in Talaha being fouled in the area, penalty for KKBM! No more important penalty will Zaquan Adha ever have, Adha against Salillas... perfect penalty from the Malaysian forward, top left corner of the goal to seal three precious points for KKBM. How important, could this win be?

Stiinta U Craiova (Cgabi – League of Champs) 3-2 KBM De Has Hoffs (Meotraju – Golden League)

This was a massive game for Stiinta, one point from two fixtures is now what the doctor ordered for the League of Champs outfit but a home tie against a side who have won their first two games having scored eight and conceded none is a tough ask even for Stiinta. They didn’t start this game too grandly either, Jerry Keegan gave the Hoffs the lead with a brilliant freekick after 33 minutes and Stiinta’s vociferous home support fell deadly silent... for five minutes. Just five minutes later Dragan Gondzic headed Stiinta level with a superb diving header and just a minute before the break, Pontus Hellman tapped home to really get the home fans going in full voice. Second half: a really ding-dong affair and midway through the half the net bulged again... the Stiinta one for Bailey Sellar danced into the area and fired home to tie the scores at 2-2. Again, this was a massive moment in the group, could anyone score a vital winner? It looked as if this was going to finish at 2-2 but just like the other game, a final attack did commence through Viaceslav who sent Paul Duncombe free in on goal to round the keeper and knock home the winning goal, a huge goal for Stiinta and their first three points in the group. Have Stiinta turned a corner? Have they took the steam out of the Hoffs’ kettle? We’ll find all this out, next week.

Gameweek Four

KBM De Das Hoffs 1-0 Stiinta U Craiova

Big week for Stiinta, needed to win here really or at least draw to settle themselves into contention, a lose however could prove to be disastrous. They went into this one full of confidence after last week’s win and edged the first half against a strong Hoffs side here but without scoring which has been the crux in the Stiinta armoury for far in the XCL. A much improved Hoffs second half performance was the last thing Stiinta wanted to see, or experience and the ever efficient, well-oiled Hoffs machine ended up bagging the winner with a quarter of an hour to play, Catalin Prelipceanu shot home to make it 1-0 and end Stiinta’s hopes... they’re running out of chances are the League of Champs champions to progress from this group.

KBM Kaki Bola Malaysia 1-0 Mechanix Tigers

A late penalty earned KKBM three points last weeks at the Tigers but today they had to ensure victory to keep their hopes of a second round place very much intact. But they weren’t going to have it all way against the Tigers who did of course hold Stiinta to a draw earlier in the campaign. The Tigers went behind early here though; Zaquan Adha who scored the late penalty in last week’s game was the man to have KKBM in front early doors here with a well timed finish. The lead was always a precarious one at 1-0 though and the Tigers had many chances in the first half and second to reinstall the stalemate situation here. They couldn’t though and many plaudits must go to Marlias in the KKBM goal who made a great account of himself, keeping a clean sheet in what could again turn out to be three precious points for KKBM. Zaquan Adha has now earned KKBM four points in two weeks...

Standings after the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st KBM De Das Hoffs 4 3 0 1 11-3 8 9
2nd KBM Kaki Bola Malaysia 4 3 0 1 6-6 0 9
3rd Stiinta U Craiova 4 1 1 2 5-6 -1 4
4th Mechanix Tigers 4 0 1 3 3-10 -7 1

Wins for the top two leave both within two points of a second round place, amazingly at Stiinta’s expense. We bid farewell sadly to the Tigers who become our first casualty of the group stages and Stiinta will follow suit if they can’t defeat KKBM next week, a major three-pointer for both clubs while the Hoffs will ensure progression if they defeat the luckless Tigers.

Group G

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Helsingfors RG 2 2 0 0 5-2 3 6
2nd Reddish FC 2 2 0 0 3-1 2 6
3rd Kimmi Comets 2 0 0 2 1-3 -2 0
4th Stendy IF 2 0 0 2 2-5 -3 0

Gameweek Three

Reddish FC (Black_Sun – Major League) 1-1 Helsingfors RG (Gejjen – Final League)

The runaway leaders came down the track as they blew whoo-whoo. These two could afford to be a little lax here; both came into this with a 100% record although a win here would set up one of these teams very nicely for the second half of the group phase. Reddish robbed Stendy the other week but there were no signs of this here, they edge a very tight first half here at Redrose Lane and grabbed the lead shortly before the break, Dermot Northfield with a goal plum from the edge of the box. Reddish’s joy was shortlived, after the break Ganix Garay wheeled past a few challenges and hammered the ball past Andervi to clinch Helsingfors a point they probably deserved a reflection. This is a point both sides will most certainly take given the circumstances surrounding the group.

Kimmi Comets (Watsupwatson – Power League) 1-1 Stendy IF (Ante75 – Xpert League)

This was an enormous game for both sides, both had to win and a draw simply wouldn’t be enough. The Comets haven’t really proven themselves yet at this level, Stendy have come away from two games with no points when they should have at least three points. They got off to a great start here though from a freekick by Lluis Soldevilla after just a quarter of an hour, his goal breaking the seal on a boiling encounter. Just eleven minutes later however, Otaka Hachirobei fired home from a good thirty yards, a worthy equalizer to get the Comets level. Tactically Stendy were more astute but the Comets had more than enough to ground out a draw and frustrate Stendy even more in a very testing group phase for the Xpert Leaguers who must now win possibly all three of their remaining fixtures to go through to round two.

Gameweek Four

Helsingfors RG 3-0 Reddish FC

Are these two trying to work together to enable them both easy runs to qualification? Both are on seven points and even if they drew again here that’d still give them at least a four – if not six – point gap to the third placed team with two games remaining. Both did their best to dispel these rumours in the first half, a real humdinger of a first half was settled when Helsingfors’ Koivisto ran round the defence and finished aplomb with a beautifully executed dink over Andervi’s body. This goal inserted oozes of confidence into Helsingfors’ second half display, playing with the freedom that came about with Reddish having to play more advanced, Ganix Garay doubled his side’s lead with a well directed header from a corner. If this didn’t make the result safe Silas Dais’ header did, a bullet header past Andervi to make it three. A big win for Helsingfors and if the other match ended in a draw, they’d also be making second round plans.

Stendy IF 4-0 Kimmi Comets

A stellar performance from the Comets lot ensured their first point in the XCL last week but they’d need something more than that here against Stendy if they wanted to get something here. Unfortunately their good performance last week only riled the Stendy players into going all out for the win. The Comets were initially holding their own here but once Ghostinen fumbled Carl Harcourt’s header into the back of the net in the 32nd minute, the floodgates opened. It took just two minutes for Vilhelm Petersson to head in goal number two and only a further four minutes passed before Harcourt had his second and Stendy’s third. They were disciplined in the arts of defending at half time from Watsupwatson who was understandably annoyed with his side’s defensive, aerial frailties but they didn’t really heed his words of wisdom and conceded a second half fourth, again a headed finish, by midfielder Isaias Santoro, the towering holding midfielder poking home to finally get Stendy’s XCL campaign in full-swing.

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Helsingfors RG 4 3 1 0 9-3 6 10
2nd Reddish FC 4 2 1 1 4-5 -1 7
3rd Stendy IF 4 1 1 2 7-6 1 4
4th Kimmi Comets 4 0 1 3 2-8 -6 1

At last! Stendy have coughed into life and made this group an interesting one and will be looking to exact revenge on Reddish next week after the side’s earlier meeting in this group. No-one’s in or out of contention yet but only a fool would suggest Helsingfors won’t make the next round in the same sense that the Comets will.

Group H

State of play before the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Vasastan BK 2 1 1 0 3-1 2 4
2nd Arctic Guerrillas 2 0 2 0 1-1 0 2
3rd Grand Rapids FC 2 0 2 0 0-0 0 2
4th Olskrokens FC 2 0 1 1 0-2 -2 1

Gameweek Three

Grand Rapids FC (Quercus – Ultimate League) 0-2 Vasastan BK (Janne_cz – Xpert International)

The Rapids decided to raise their waters here with a backs-against-the-wall style formation against Vasastan whose story of restoration mirrors that of the Samba Juniors in the way they’ve risen through the divisions. Today they were fantastic, the Rapids are no slouches but they were made to implement the tactic of ten men behind the ball at all times whenever Vasastan were in possession. The Swedes were struggling against a side who hadn’t been involved in an XCL game which contained goals yet but on 45 minutes, with the Grand Rapids players looking forward to a cuppa, Raul Albin scored with a wonderful strike from a freekick, a top class goal to give Vasastan a half time lead. “Oh I say, hath we conceded?” muttered the astounded Rapids players. Unfortunately they were a bit lazy to start the second half too; just five minutes in Janne Sodergren ran free of the defence and latched onto Posener’s through ball before depositing it in the corner. That goal took the wind out the sails of the Rapids, deflated they sank to a defeat, Vasastan imperious and now look odds on to reach the next stage. A win and anything other than an Olskrokens win will confirm that.

Olskrokens FC (MrEriksen – Xpert League) 0-2 Arctic Guerrillas (Xbytelizer – Pro League)

Another optimistic shout with Olskrokens deploying the 343 against the Guerrillas who, on paper, have one of the best teams in the competition – a pivotal mistake by all accounts. From start to finish the Guerrillas were completely dominant in defence, midfield and attack. It was almost like men versus boys and Olskrokens were being taught a real lesson here. They held out for such a long time but with time of the essence, Vincente Arce shrugged off his marker and buried the ball into the bottom right corner of the Olskrokens goal to give the Guerrillas the lead. With six to play it was all over, Arce doubling his side’s lead with a routine effort from twelve yards out, absolutely clinical from the Finns.

Gameweek Four

Vasastan BK 5-0 Grand Rapids FC

The Grand Rapids did nothing to circumvent Vasastan’s merciless victory last week and few backed them to get any sort of result here away to the very same team. Their clean sheet record was breached last week but they’re yet to get off the scoring mark which must worry Quercus given his team’s wealth of talent. They helped themselves early on here when the game’s most decorated player, Artur Posener, limped off after just two minutes with an injury. With the key stealth of the defence rumbled, could Vasastan still shut out the Rapids? Well... They simply didn’t need to. A good first half performance was finally rewarded when Tord Fridh shot home from inside the penalty area and the score was doubled soon after, Calisto Macedo heading into the net. Then just before the break Raul Albin made it three, the start of a fantastic game for the thirty year old as he netted in his third consecutive XCL match. Into the second half and the scoring didn’t stop, Albin increased his side’s lead when he buried Leander’s cross and his heading prowess knew no bounds when he notched his hattrick from Macedo’s ball in. A wonderful hattrick left Grand Rapids dumbfounded and let down by their own weak defending. Vasastan haven’t lost since the 2nd of July and on this form, their record doesn’t appear to be ending on the horizon...

Arctic Guerrillas 0-0 Olskrokens FC

The Guerrillas finally got their first win next week against a poor Olskrokens showing but again today there were rumours Xbytelizer would be missing from the dugout and not for the first time this competition did these rumours circulate. Indeed he did appear to be missing from action here and Olskrokens would be looking to take full advantage of their opponents’ troubles. Both sides had three up front and Olskrokens weren’t seeing much of the ball but when they did see it, they put it to good use. Fashioning two or three really good chances, Olskrokens gave a really good go but unfortunately for them they found Sbaccanti in inspired form. The south american goalkeeper kept the scores blank and amazingly, the Guerrillas are still unbeaten in this season’s XCL, not bad for a team in no real sort of form.

Standings after the double-headers:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD Points
1st Vasastan BK 4 3 1 0 10-1 9 10
2nd Arctic Guerrillas 4 1 3 0 3-1 2 6
3rd Olskrokens FC 4 0 2 2 0-4 -4 2
4th Grand Rapids FC 4 0 2 2 0-7 -7 2

So Vasastan have made it and they’re looking like genuine contenders for the crown this season if they can keep this level of performances up... and Posener can stay out of the wars. Ten points out of twelve ain’t nothing to be sniffed at and Sweden have been long awaiting another hero... They could be joined by the Guerrillas next week if they equal or better Olskrokens result whilst avoiding defeat against the Rapids. The latter two will just be hoping to get off the mark with goals though, one would imagine...

And there we go double-headers over and only Vasastan BK and KBM Whitsunday have made it through to the next round and the only team definitely out the picture are Group F’s Mechanix Tigers. Well done and commiserations to those but still twenty-nine teams with their fates undecided (relatively in some cases) so still a lot to play for a lot of big teams are very much in the mix, some even in last chance saloon. Who’s going to win the XCL this season? I’ve absolutely no idea...
