Dream League 29: Howl can you top this?
Season 29 of the Dream League would be very interesting for spectators. Following the incredible victory by South Hooligans last season in one of most exciting Dream League seasons of all time, the rulebook had been re-written. It seemed that you could indeed win a major league title while rebuilding your side. That said, it would take a mammoth effort from Sommers to be able to defend his title following the retirement of Harold Bentley. This would mean Shadow City would be title favourites right? Nope, Shadow City also decided to rebuild their side, meaning any chance of a second title was now gone.

And so a new chapter in Dream League history was about to begin, there would be a new champion this season but who would it be? Broken Foundation had completed the long and winding road from the bottom of the league to the top, the team had been known as Scousers Scum under Funnydave for a long time but needed that extra push to get even further, provided first by Treb99 and then by Jkchops who took them all the way to the top., At the start of the season they had the strongest team in the Dream League, with the standout player being defender Jimi Mallett. The name Queen Seondeok disappeared from the top flight as Bi-Dam resigned as manager and was replaced by Em72, changing the club’s name to Romania. While the team had the strongest starting XI out of any team in the top division, would the change in management mean they would underachieve or would they only get stronger? Wolfee’s WolverhamptonWonders only lost out on automatic promotion in the last few rounds but were also a very strong team, Wolfee having taken them all the way from Division 7 to the Dream League, the signings of 16 year old defender Alberto Simoni and 19 year old defender Mark Peacock in season 13 proving the foundations of today’s team, while the other promoted team was Division 1b winners and former cup finalists Hollywood Cubos FC. The standard of the promoted teams was very high, of the top four strongest teams in the league, only Golden Goal had been in the division last season. Bookmakers couldn’t decide who the title favourites were, thanks to the actions taken by Genericuser, Bi-Dam and Sommers. In any case it looked like being an extremely close season again. As things turned out, this would be even more exciting than last season’s epic.

New signings were made by several teams during the off-season. The most obvious changes being, as mentioned, Shadow City rebuilding their squad as they signed four new youngsters in Josef Wallerstedt, Ricciardo Lippi, Raphael Katz and Amaranto Helguerra while selling Yves Maton, Raul Hart and Aloin Balland and sacking Kendrick Raynor. Leaving South Hooligans was veteran defender Kingsley Oates, who was sacked just after the retirement of Bentley, with the squad topped up on youngsters to go with the ones who were signed already last season in Nelu Sorin, Jaime Bird, Ramiz Burek and Felipe Pastor. Elsewhere, Falkarnas BK sold Jordi Verhagen and Pieter Hammargren for a combined fee of 3.5 million econ, Hollywood Cubos sold 35 year old striker Ernesto dos Santos and replacing him with 30 year old Byron Vickers who was given the number 21 shirt for the new campaign, Romania brought 3 new youngsters in to replace the old two that were sacked and Wolves signed 22 year old defender Joan Manuel Gomes to replace the departed Alfred Hitchcock, who was sold to GKP Hotspurs. His brother Kearney was to stay at the team during the upcoming season. With the teams adjusted it was time to get the season underway.

The season began with reigning champions South Hooligans opening their campaign away to newly promoted Hollywood Cubos FC, a game which finished 1-1 after a late Ravid Uziel header settled things and ensured South Hooligans would at least get one point out of this season. Romania meanwhile were tasked with trying to defeat Falkarnas BK at home, a task they were unable to do as they also drew their game 0-0. Life after being a Dream League force began for Shadow City as they went 1-0 down to Wolves in the second minute and an injury to one of Wolves’ main defenders wasn’t enough to give them the initiative as Wolves claimed victory on the opening day, a clear sign of the change in establishment in the Dream League. The most anticipated game of the day however was Broken Foundation vs. Golden Goal. Broken Foundation with the strongest squad in the league, Golden Goal who finished 3rd last time. Broken Foundation had tons of chances but were having difficulty converting. Finally though, Art Cutler broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute and from there it proved to be easy. Donovan Williams scored a second for Foundation while Ralph Yell thought he’d pulled one back for Golden Goal only for it to be offside. So Broken Foundation had the same number of points as Wolves on the first day and the two sat 1st and 2nd in the Dream League while Shadow City were bottom. Despite spirited efforts from both Shadow City and the Hooligans, it appeared the teams were no longer competitive in the top flight. They’d need other teams to have bad seasons in order to survive.

As the season progressed, the league was separating into two halves, those battling for the title and those battling against relegation. So we were set to have a four way title fight between two very different types of team. Golden Goal and Falkarnas both had a year’s worth of experience in these situations in the Dream League last season while Broken Foundation and WolverhamptonWonders were new to it all. At the other end, experienced campaigners in Shadow City and South Hooligans were fighting to avoid the drop along with Hollywood Cubos and Romania, whose manager had added youngsters to the team in a bid to cure their average age problems.

Wolves had made a flying start to life in the top flight but they came unstuck against Falkarnas and lost 3-0. Broken Foundation capitalised on this defeat by thrashing Romania 3-0 to go top of the league on goal difference. In the next round, the pair clicked on and unleashed their true potential. Despite the fact that Wolves beat Hollywood Cubos 8-1 they were still second on goal difference after Broken Foundation put 5 past South Hooligans, but to the cost of their top scorer at that point in the season, Art Cutler. Without Cutler, BF came unstuck in Round 6 against Falkarnas, just like Wolves had. This result meant the game between Golden Goal and Wolves could prove decisive. Key midfield man Jonathan Gall gave Wolves the lead before an own goal by Randall Sawyer put Golden Goal back on level terms. Both sides went in search of a winner but to no avail and the spoils were shared at 1-1. This was enough to put Wolves top by a single point but the Broken Foundation defeat brought both Golden Goal and Falkarnas BK into the mix.

But then Falkarnas lost to reigning champions South Hooligans as it transcribed that Sommers’ team had a chance of staying up. They overturned this result in the reverse fixture but it was a damaging blow to their title chances. Golden Goal and Broken Foundation thought they’d caught a break when they heard that Romania were drawing with WolverhamptonWonders but a dramatic last minute goal from Simoni sealed all three points for the Wolves and kept themselves top by a single point. The following week was another massive game between Wonders and Golden where a decisive 3-1 victory for Wonders coupled with a 0-0 draw for Broken Foundation left Wonders 3 points ahead and looking like favourites to win the title. They still had to face Broken Foundation towards the end of the season but BF had both Wolves and Golden Goal to contend with.

A dramatic collapse in form for Broken Foundation was then matched by WolverhamptonWonders themselves stuttering while Golden Goal were bang in form. Falkarnas weren’t out of the picture either and they were the ones who held the Wolves to a draw, they had also beaten Wolves earlier in the season so remained unscarred by Wolfee’s troops. Broken Foundation ended a dismal run of results with a dramatic victory over Romania which consigned the two time cup winners to relegation after four seasons in the top flight. The situation made the title fight even more interesting with three teams within two points of each other and a further team lurking back that could steal it.

By the start of gameweek 12 the table was looking like this:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD P
1 WolverhamptonWonders 11 7 3 1 28 - 11 17 24
2 Golden Goal 11 7 2 2 26 - 12 14 23
3 Broken Foundation 11 7 1 3 22 - 7 15 22
4 Falkarnas BK 11 5 4 2 15 - 10 5 19
5 South Hooligans 11 4 2 5 15 - 25 -10 14
6 Shadow City 11 3 1 7 18 - 24 -6 10
7 Hollywood Cubos FC 11 1 3 7 12 - 32 -20 6
8 Romania 11 0 4 7 8 - 23 -15 4

WolverhamptonWonders’ title credentials would be tested at Kardinia Park. Broken Foundation had already fallen there and relegation battling South Hooligans had proven they were unwilling to let their crown go without a fight. Maybe Wolves underestimated their opponents as they gave a start to 16 year old midfielder Jerrard Brennan and the Hooligans destroyed the Wolves 4-0 in the first half, a brace from Josh Yorke and a goal apiece for Frazer Gordon and Derek Norman. This was compounded in the second half by a nasty injury to Neil Tenser for Wolves before Josh Yorke scored two more goals to cap a memorable game for the South Hooligans number 9 and a 6-0 win for the Hooligans. This result ensured that South Hooligans would be playing top flight football again next season. It also opened the door for one of Broken Foundation or Golden Goal to go top of the league and this result relegated Hollywood Cubos after just one season in the top flight, not that the Cubos helped themselves by losing to Romania. But with Romania relegated a confused Em27 resigned from his post meaning the club had no manager for the penultimate game of the season.

Broken Foundation meanwhile played Shadow City and with the Wolves result, could go top with a win provided Golden Goal struggled against Falkarnas. They did what was expected of them and thrashed Shadow City 3-0. This sadly confirmed the relegation of Shadow City after four seasons in the top flight, so the relegation battle was done and dusted. All the Broken Foundation fans could do now was wait for news from the other games.

Golden Goal had a tough task against title outsiders Falkarnas. They made a bad start thanks to Falkarnas’ Jonathan Sunesson but got back into the game through Hogni Schroter. Carl-Otto Stening however, put Falkarnas back in front only for Schroter to equalise. Like a pair of children arguing over a chocolate biscuit, Stening responded to restore Falkarnas’ lead which they held onto until the final whistle to set up a tantalisingly close finish to the season.

Going into gameweek 13 the table looked like this:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA GD P
1 Broken Foundation 12 8 1 3 25 - 7 18 25
2 WolverhamptonWonders 12 7 3 2 28 - 17 11 24
3 Golden Goal 12 7 2 3 28 - 15 13 23
4 Falkarnas BK 12 6 4 2 18 - 12 6 22
5 South Hooligans 12 5 2 5 21 - 25 -4 17
6 Shadow City 12 3 1 8 18 - 27 -9 10
7 Romania 12 1 4 7 13 - 25 -12 7
8 Hollywood Cubos FC 12 1 3 8 14 - 37 -23 6

The most insane scenario you could possible imagine, four teams within three points of each other, if it wasn’t close enough last round it was even closer now. Two of the top four played each other; Broken Foundation vs. WolverhamptonWonders at London was the biggest game of the day and a potential title decider. If Broken Foundation won, WolverhamptonWonders’ title chances were over. If WolverhamptonWonders won, the fixture list would put them against already relegated Shadow City where all they would have to do is win the game to win the title. Therefore this was a must win game for the Wolves if they wanted to keep their title chances alive. Randall Sawyer got the game off to the perfect start with a second minute opener. Twenty minutes later however, Marlon Lafitte equalised from Donovan Williams’ cross. Mark Peacock was lucky to get away with a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Senol Biler which forced the midfielder off for 36 year old midfielder Marty Arber. Just one minute later, Jonathon Gall restored Wolves lead.

The second half was much quieter. That is until the 65th minute when Cutler had the chance to equalise, but he failed to take it. Randall Sawyer thought he’d extended the Wolves’ lead only for his goal to be ruled out, with Gall’s follow-up hitting the post. Wolves were rampant though, with Jonathon Gall at the heart of everything good they were doing. Time was running out and the Wolves’ championship challenge was alive and kicking, with Broken Foundation manager Jkchops resigned to defeat.

With South Hooligans having felled both Broken Foundation and WolverhamptonWonders, it was Golden Goal’s turn to face the six time champions; the only difference being the game was at Holmsbo. To top this all off, with the Hooligans safe from relegation they fielded a weakened team in order to give the youngsters some experience. And so a Ralph Yell Hattrick catapulted Golden Goal into 2nd place behind Wolves who’d regained the lead. Falkarnas meanwhile played relegated Hollywood Cubos as they bid to continue their role as the dark horse in this title race, however, it would take a monumental goal swing for them to win the title.

Going into the final round of games therefore, the table looked like this:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA Diff P
1 WolverhamptonWonders 13 8 3 2 30 - 18 12 27
2 Golden Goal 13 8 2 34 - 15  19 26
3 Broken Foundation 13 8 1 4 26 - 9 17 25
4 Falkarnas BK 13 7 4 2 22 - 12 10 25
5 South Hooligans 13 5 2 6 21 - 31 -10 17
6 Shadow City 13 4 1 8 24 - 27 -3 13
7 Romania 13 1 4 8 13 - 31 -18 7
8 Hollywood Cubos FC 13 1 3 9 14 - 41 -27 6

With WolverhamptonWonders at home to Shadow City, all they needed to do was to beat the already relegated club at the Bowl to claim the title in their first season in the top flight. If Shadow City decided to be party poopers however, then the winner of the game between Broken Foundation and Golden Goal could claim the title. The whole situation bore stark similarities to the end of last season, where the league leaders at that stage, South Hooligans, had to win against the already relegated Spurs Kickers and if they didn’t then the big clash between Shadow City and Golden Goal would decide the title. That game for the Hooligans was the last ever for Harold Bentley and this game was to be Alberto Simoni’s last game for Wolves, and no better way for the club’s longest serving player to go out than on a high right?

Shadow City stated their intentions to make things hard for the Wolves by winning a free kick in the first minute of the game but Jacques Leleu was unable to trouble Wester. Wolves themselves won a free kick at the other end but Kearney Hitchcock failed to trouble Wallerstedt in the Shadow City goal. Wolves captain Randall Sawyer soon put them ahead however and the Wolves fans started to believe they would win the title. Those ambitions were brought back down to earth with a bump thanks to Gerard Le Bot’s goal for Shadow City.

The Shadow City goal brought hope for Golden Goal and Broken Foundation and the teams decided try and capitalise. Golden Goal’s Ralph Yell had the chance to give his team the lead, but squandered it and in the 19th minute in the other game, Kearney Hitchcock’s free kick goal restored Wolves’ lead and title hopes. Carl Mitchell’s goal for Broken Foundation gave them hope for 2nd place and the title if Wolves drew in the end. 41 minutes in and Hubert Jones’ goal gave them a 2-0 lead. Even if neither won the title, positional money was at stake here.

Half time and it was 2-1 to Wolves and 2-0 to Broken Foundation. As things stood, WolverhamptonWonders would win the title and Broken Foundation would finish 2nd but there was still 45 minutes left in both games.

56 minutes in and Yell’s goal pulled one back for Golden and gave them fresh hope. Nothing was really happening in the other game though; both these sides needed Wolves to slip up. 60 minutes in and Schroter equalised, sending Golden Goal back above Broken Foundation in the standings. 76 minutes in and Hubert Jones restored Foundation’s lead, only for Terada to equalise a minute later but no good news was coming from the Bowl, which could make the difference between a dead rubber fixture and a title decider from this game. In fact, it got worse for both sides as another Kearney Hitchcock free kick made Wolves’ lead more comfortable and they were surely now going to win the title. Despite a last ditch effort on goal, Broken Foundation were forced to share the spoils with Golden Goal but in the end both of these teams will feel they could have done more to win the title this season and both came away empty handed, well, sort of (you’ll find out later what I mean about that). They could take solace in the fact that Falkarnas’ up and down season ended in a shock defeat to already relegated Romania, now managed by former Lucky 7 manager Ian_Palmer, meaning Golden Goal would improve on last season’s campaign by one position and Broken Foundation would finish an impressive 3rd in their first top flight season.

The full time whistle blew at the Bowl however and the Wolves fans went into raptures. They’d done it; at their first attempt at the top flight they’d won the Dream League title. Wolfee was ecstatic on the touchline as a unique atmosphere encapsulated the stadium. As captain, Wolves’ Randall Sawyer was responsible for hoisting the Dream League trophy into the air, a trophy previously won by PF Stratocasters and South Hooligans, to signify the league title victory. However, he only had one hand on the trophy as teammate Alberto Simoni in his final ever game for the club lifted the title with him. What a season it has been for WolverhamptonWonders and they will go into the next XCL to represent the Dream League. For Golden Goal and Broken Foundation it was a case of a missed opportunity, though AAndreas expressed hope that his side would be competing for the title the following season. What a dramatic season it was though.

The final table looked like this:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA Diff P
1 WolverhamptonWonders 14 9 3 2 33 - 19 14 30
2 Golden Goal 14 8 3 3 37 - 18 19 27

Following WolverhamptonWonders’ title win we managed to catch up with the guy who masterminded the entire thing, from Division 7 to the top flight, an exclusive interview with manager Wolfee:

XD: Congratulations on winning the Dream League at your first attempt. Did you ever think your side would be title contenders once you got promotion?

Wolfee: Thanks, I'm actually still shocked I won the title, after promotion last season I genuinely thought we would be relegated this season.

Luckily for me though the previous 2 winners of the league (Sommers - South Hooligans and Genericuser - Shadow City) needed to redevelop their squads with some younger players throwing the league wide open.

XD: You took over this team way back in season 11 and began a reconstruction of your squad. It took a while for the team to get going but once your team got their first promotion it’s been an incredible run of success, with relegation in Season 26 the only real blip. How did you motivate yourself during the first seven seasons when results were hard to come by?

Wolfee: To be honest those first 7 seasons were all about player development, I was always thinking long term and so results were not important to me at that time. In many ways I think this year’s success is down to the player development in those early seasons.

XD: The season was incredibly close with four teams in the running for the title even towards the final stages of the season. Was there any point during the season where you thought you wouldn’t win it?

Wolfee: Yep, even going into the last match I didn't really think I'd win it. Luck played a major part, I think the fixture list was particularly kind to me, facing two teams with a lot of youngsters in the first 3 matches was a help and got me off to a great start.

XD: This was the last season for one of your earliest signings Alberto Simoni. As a constant fixture in the Xpert Eleven during the season and your best defender, how much of a hole in the squad does his retirement leave?

Wolfee: Alberto is irreplaceable; he's been the MVP for the last 5 seasons in whichever league I've been in. His retirement along with a few other players hitting their mid 30's will mean me having to overhaul the squad next season unfortunately

XD: Your league title victory will see you compete in the XCL this season. How well do you think your team will fare and is there any team out there you’d want to face?

Wolfee: It's only just dawned on me that I'll be competing in it to be honest. I've never really paid it much attention. I'll give it my best shot, but as I said earlier I'm going to need to redevelop my squad this year so doubt I'll do very well.

XD: Do you think you will be able to defend your league title next season?

Wolfee: No, not a chance! I'm expecting a relegation battle.

XD: What advice would you give to anyone who wants to take a team from the very bottom of the league to the very top?

Wolfee: Save your money, develop players on the cheap whilst in the lower leagues.

XD: What do you think of the new tactics screen?

Wolfee: Visually it's great! Although this season I've mostly had to use my mobile phone to set tactics etc and so can be a bit fiddly on a small screen.

XD: Is there anything you’d like to see included in the game?

Wolfee: It'd be nice to be able to change tactics mid match under certain conditions like we can for subs now. So for example if you were 2 nil down you could change to a more attacking formation.

XD: Finally, it’s been a mixed start for Wolves in League One so far. Are you confident the squad can still get automatic promotion or is that looking unlikely at this stage?

Wolfee: Nothing less than automatic promotion will suffice for us Wolves fans. I think we've got the right manager in charge and so are confident we'll do it.

And with that, the Wolves partied right into the evening, but they’ll have an eye on the promoted teams looking to steal their crown, especially in light of the revelation that a rebuild could be on the horizon already. Former cup champions C.F Real Madrid and JC Sunbeams were both promoted to the top flight, and both are very strong outfits which could threaten the title challengers next season. Asdabayor’s FC Sensi were the third team to be promoted to the top flight, through the same route that WolverhamptonWonders were promoted last season. But that’s for another time, for now; let’s just reflect on one of the greatest Dream League seasons of all time.

Cup Review:

The expansion of the Dream League recently to accommodate an extra 512 teams meant for the first time in a few seasons, some of the big teams like South Hooligans started their cup adventure in the first round. Everyone who was 9th seed downwards had the experience of playing a game on the Thursday before the season started, an experience some hadn’t had for a while. However, the easy opposition for the entire top half ensured that there were no major casualties in the first round. Spurs Kickers could have been considered a major casualty in the second half but in the second season of a rebuild it wasn’t really too much of a surprise to see them go out to a better team. Due to the way the XCL fixtures pan out alongside the Dream League Cup, South Hooligans managed to make it to the 5th round with their team of youngsters and a few older players while last season’s semi-finalists FC Bentnick fell to top flight opposition in Broken Foundation in dramatic fashion thanks to a late Donovan Williams goal although a Red card did assist the Dream League side.

The first major casualty of the cup was Golden Goal who fell to Division 4 side El Arcarreno CF in the third round. At the same time, Hollywood Cubos went out of the cup on away goals, again to division 4 opposition in Jambos1902. WolverhamptonWonders were next to fall as they also fell to Division 4 opposition in Foggle Rock. A team named “Completely Random” got a completely random result in round 5 against Division 1 side Bascia FC as despite Bascia dominating; CR got a 2-2 draw and then won 6-3 on penalties. If ever a team’s name was apt this was it. Holders C.F Real Madrid fell in Round 5 to Division 2 side FC Chichi Team while Falkarnas B.K lost to Cacarretas FC and the only top flight teams left in the cup now were two times Dream League cup winners Romania and title contenders Broken Foundation. Neither of which were the highest seeds left in the competition. Romania’s cup pedigree would have to be called upon here and, like in the league; we would not get back to back champions in the cup.

So, with that in mind, let’s introduce the 16 teams who made it to the last 16 and the fixtures they were given:

JC Sunbeams vs. Barneses Ball Club
US Jets FC vs. Porthleven F.C
Heaton Mags vs. Romania
The Devil Dogs vs. Xelente
Slitz AIK vs. FC Sensi
Bukmacherzy Slawno vs. Caldas F.C
Kraken vs. Broken Foundation
Rhine Titans vs. FK Crvena Zvezda

Of the remaining teams, only JC Sunbeams and Romania had previously won the cup. Broken Foundation and Romania were the only top flight teams left in the cup but there were plenty of strong teams left. In total, there were 2 top flight sides, 3 Division 1 sides, 3 Division 2 sides, 3 Division 3 sides, 3 Division 4 sides (I’m starting to see a pattern here) and rather surprisingly, 2 Division 5 sides left in the cup. Tremendous congratulations to The Devil Dogs and Caldas FC on making it to the last 16 of the cup. That being said however, the Devil Dogs had a tricky task as they were up against Xelente of Division 1 while Caldas had a slightly easier task against Division 3 side Bukmacherzy Slawno but it was still a difficult match.

The standout game of the last 16 turned out to be the game between Kraken and Broken Foundation. Kraken scored within two minutes, or at least Lukas Fredriksson thought he had but referee Sten Koll ruled the goal out. Glen Buttery and Abbas Solari then scored in a first half dominated by Broken Foundation. An injury to Kraken’s Marcos Irujo forced young Jakob Dauugard on in his place which effectively killed the game for Kraken and allowed Abbas Solari to complete his hat-trick. Solari came off to a standing ovation as he was replaced by Ron Hodges and Broken Foundation were heading into the quarter finals.

Elsewhere, JC Sunbeams had a nervous moment against Barneses Ball Club but a Grady Fitzpatrick goal sealed their place in the quarter finals, a tale of two penalties for Crvena as an brace from Albertino Vale knocked Rhine Titans out of the cup, no upset for the Devil Dogs as Xelente scored twice through Anselmo Ruthemann to end a long cup run, likewise Caldas FC didn’t have enough in them to knock out Slawno, but joy for Slitz as they shocked Division 1 promotion contenders FC Sensi by knocking them out with a Ryan Omouth goal in extra time. But that wasn’t even the biggest shock of the round, Heaton Mags stunned Dream League side Romania by knocking them out of the cup. Romania had had a poor league season but found solace in the cup to get to the last 16. They weren’t going to be winning it now though.

So the highest ranked team left in terms of league position was Broken Foundation but there were still some very good teams left in the cup and the quarter finals drew them as follows:

FK Crvena Zvezda vs. JC Sunbeams
Porthleven F.C vs. Xelente
Heaton Mags vs. Slitz AIK
Broken Foundation vs. Bukmacherzy Slawno

The two major upsets from the last round would therefore be head to head against each other while the other three ties had teams who could be considered favourites, but at this stage of the cup everyone who’s left in the cup deserves to be in it. The tie of the upsets was a close run affair although Heaton Mags thoughts they’d scored early on through Aulis Kemppainen. Even an injury to Slitz goalkeeper Chris Incorvaia couldn’t tip the scoreline in the Mags’ favour as 19 year old Jurgen Asongo was forced to play in goal for the rest of the game. As the Mags upped the pressure in the second half of extra time, nothing could separate them and so the game went to penalties. Big pressure for Asongo then and in the end, keepers proved to be the difference as Heaton Mags progressed to the semi-finals thanks to a 7-6 penalty shoot out win with the decisive penalty resulting in a save, up until then, every penalty had been scored. Elsewhere, Broken Foundation cruised past Bukmacherzy Slawno thanks to goals from Art Cutler and Hubert Jones while Xelente, despite marginally dominating the game, took a 0-0 draw all the way to a penalty shoot-out, which they won 4-2

But that didn’t compare to the drama that JC Sunbeams were involved in against FK Crvena Zvezda. Valdemar Kumlin opened the scores for the Sunbeams but an Albertino Vale free kick equalised the game. Ludwig Plateryd then gave Crvena the lead before Kumlin restored parity to make it 2-2. Crvena went ahead through Plateryd again but in the 85th minute a dramatic goal by Chad Buntin took the game to extra time. Then, in extra time, with Crvena racking up the yellow cards it was almost inevitable that someone would get sent off and Marcelino Galinha was that man, Crvena down to 10 men. And in the 118th minute, Elton Kirk thought he’d sealed the Sunbeams’ place in the semi-finals, but to his dismay the goal was chalked off for offside. You just couldn’t write this script. And so the game went to a penalty shoot-out. After every penalty was scored, Howie Ollerton for JC Sunbeams missed his crucial penalty. Ernest McKechnie, distant relative of former Ballbreakers midfielder Kearney McKechnie, then sealed the deal for 10 man Crvena as they progress into the semi-finals for the first time in their history.

So, FK Crvena Zvezda, Broken Foundation, Xelente and Heaton Mags all had a very real chance of glory but only one of them could win the cup. Certainly, the final wouldn’t be Heaton Mags vs. Broken Foundation or Crvena Zvezda vs. Xelente as those were the semi-finals. Despite only just making it through to the semis on penalties, Crvena dominated against Xelente in terms of chances. However, they were having trouble finding the back of the net against the Division 1 side. They were undone in the 69th minute thanks to a Cianan Murtagh free kick, which put the former Dream League side into their first cup final.

The other semi-final got off to a lightning start, Art Culter opened the scoring for Broken Foundation only for Heaton Mags to equalise through Matthias Dudfield. Blazevic restored the lead after half time and gave Foundation a cushion with a two goal lead and despite Heaton Mags’ best efforts,  Broken Foundation were through to the cup final for the first time ever and at that moment had a potential double in their sights.

The Final

So the 29th Dream League cup final would be played between two teams who before this season had never won a major trophy, Division 1 side Xelente who were relegated from the Dream League last season and top flight side Broken Foundation who were involved in a four way title battle and could potentially do the double. The XCL awaited either Jkchops or Sebastian_ro.

Sebastian_ro was in his first season at Xelente manager having taken over from Dojan81, who resigned as manager following their relegation from the Dream League. Relegation to Division 2 is probably not how he expected the league to go but that was irrelevant now as they chased their first ever major silverware. Echipa ronaldo and America United fell before a shock defeat to division 6 side Persita Tangerang was overturned in the third round.  AC Googlex 2007, 37sEleven, Hong Kong FC, Completely Random, The Devil Dogs, Porthleven and Crevena all fell in Xelente’s journey to the final.

Broken Foundation were juggling a title challenge in the Dream League with a cup run that saw them defeat steaua turda, ManchesterUnited F.C, Darkside United, FC Bentinck, Taz Devils FC, Heathen Allstars, Manchester City USA, Kraken, Bukmacherzy Slawno and Heaton Mags to reach the final for the very first time. It’s taken a long time and two changes of management, but this team was finally fulfilling on its promise.

Captains Jimi Mallett and Camil Coehlo led out their sides for the 29th Dream League cup final, Xelente’s team was as follows:

1 GK Jurek Kaleta

2 DF Camil Coelho (captain)
6 DF Mordechai Ninyo
4 DF Oscar Lennqvist
16 DF Marcus Borril

7 MF Robert Cegrell
8 MF Cianan Murtagh
19 MF Otto Grenholm
24 MF Deane Forster
12 MF Anselmo Ruthemann

10 FW Joseph Pakha

Bench:

3 DF Louis Heskey
28 DF Todd Yates
5 MF Mikel Manjarin
25 FW Allan Fedeli

Broken Foundation were hit with an injury blow in the big title deciding game against WolverhamptonWonders that meant they could not field 28 year old Senol Biler in the cup final. With this injury to contend with, manager Jkchops was forced to play the following side:

1 GK Hans-Ruedi Streun

4 DF Franco Alba
23 DF Luis Guayabita
3 DF Jimi Mallett (captain)
6 DF Mark Terentiev

7 MF Donavan Williams
8 MF Hubert Jones
30 MF Dragoljub Blazevic
29 MF Marlon Laffite
17 MF Carl Mitchell

10 FW Art Cutler

Bench:
12 GK Romulo Fogaca
2 DF Raphael Read
11 MF Marty Arber
27 MF Glenn Buttery
19 FW Ron Hodges

The referee for this one was Hans Gruber which made for the possibility of a very close cup final. Gruber kicked off the game and Broken Foundation, knowing the strength of their opponents, immediately went on the attack and Marlon Laffite’s side foot shot on goal gave Broken Foundation the lead. Great start for the English side and the perfect appetiser to make the fans comfortable. Having a goal so early on could prove to be so important. Two minutes later, Cutler tried to chip Kaleta but his shot was tipped over the net.

Broken Foundation continued to dominate possession and Donavon Williams’ corner was headed into the net by Lafitte for his second of the game. Lafitte was proving to be something of a hero for those in blue, 28 minutes in and two goals. Two minutes later he tried to complete his hat-trick but the ball went over the bar. 2-0 was the scoreline at half time and Xelente were in trouble. Sebastian_ro’s last hope of saving their season was looking down the drain unless he could inspire something from his charges in the second half.

Half time over and Otto Grenholm immediately attacked the goal hoping to get one back but with one of the best goalkeepers in the Dream League in Hans-Ruedi Streun, that’s easier said than done and Streun tipped it over the crossbar. Knowing they needed to change things, Xelente brought on Louis Heskey for Oscar Lennqvist before Broken Foundation defender Mark Terentiev was forced off with a nasty injury. Was that a glimmer of hope for Xelente? Broken Foundation knew they couldn’t afford to sit back and rest on their lead now but they were still comfortable enough. Xelente went to the average age solution and brought on 17 year old defender Todd Yeates for Marcus Borill in an attempt to keep out Foundation. That didn’t work though because Luis Guayabita was left in acres of space but his shot was nowhere near the goal. Time was running out for Xelente but in the 83rd minute Joseph Pakha gave his side a glimmer of hope from Cianan Murtagh’s cross to make it 2-1. Surely not? Broken Foundation immediately went on the attack again as Donovan William’s shot smashed into the post but there were a few anxious faces among the Broken Foundation fans. That equaliser for Xelente never came however and in the 93rd minute, Cutler’s powerful header on goal went centimetres over the crossbar. But it didn’t matter, no matter what happened in the league, Broken Foundation would claim their first major piece of silverware and XCL qualification. The fans for jubilant, for so long they wondered if they would get anywhere, even this season in such a tight Dream League title race. But no-one can take the title away from them now, they’d done it. Foundation captain Mallett hoisted the Dream League Cup into the air and his team was jubilant.

Possession: 42 - 58 (42-58)
Chances: 2 - 7 (0-4)

Home - Man Of The Match - Away
Joseph Pakha                                                     Jimi Mallett

For Xelente though, it was such a brave effort to make the final but with relegation and defeat in the cup final they have nothing to show for their efforts and time is running out for these players. Camilo Coelho has since retired as of the date of this review being published, as has Mikel Manjarin. Whatever is next for Xelente, we wish them all the best.

Cup stats:
Top points scorer: Albertino Vale (FK Crvena Zvezda) - 22
Top goalscorer: Albertino Vale (FK Crvena Zvezda), Cianan Murtagh (Xelente) – both 14
Top assists: Einar Tonseth (Trueque FC) - 11

For Broken Foundation however, jubilation and we caught up with Jkchops after the season had finished to reflect on the team’s cup triumph:

XD: Congrats on winning the Dream League cup in only your fourth season in charge of the club, how are you feeling?

Jkchops: Elated! It eases the pain of losing out on the Dream League title. It’s definitely one of my proudest achievements in all my years playing x11. Although it’s my 5th season in charge :) (Whoops, top journalism right there –Ed)

XD: You took over this team in Division 3, what attracted you to this team in particular?

Jkchops: At the time I was looking to take on a new challenge and was actively applying for teams to takeover. I saw potential in this side and knew that with a few tweaks that they could win titles. In 5 seasons as manager we’ve finished 1st three times, 3rd once and 5th once along with winning the cup of course. I think it’s been a great success.

XD: Who would you say was your toughest opponent in this cup run?

Jkchops: On reflection I had a favourable cup draw. I think only twice was my team not stronger than my opponent and one of those was the final itself. In terms of close matches then really only against Heathen Allstars were we in trouble as we were 1-0 down with 7 minutes to go but scored in the 83rd and 85th minute to win deservedly.

XD: Your cup win means you’ll be competing in the XCL next season, how do you rate your chances?

Jkchops: Slim to none and slim has left the building! It will be my first ever time competing in the XCL so I’m excited by this prospect. However, I’m realistic and know that my team are much weaker than a lot of the teams competing in the competition so am not expecting much.

XD: You also competed for the Dream League title this season but came up short. Did you ever think your side could be title contenders in their first season in the top flight?

Jkchops: Coming into the start of the season we were one of the strongest sides in the Dream league so going for the title was always possible. Ultimately we lost out because lady luck wasn’t on our side and shone bright on Wolverhampton Wonders who managed to take more points from games where they were out chanced, had less possession and generally 2nd best whereas we didn’t do that.

XD: The season was extremely close towards the end, two points separating the top four going into the final round, exciting for the spectators, but how did it feel for you being involved in such a close title fight?

Jkchops: It was exciting and nerve racking at the same time. We were top early on up until the 6th match, dropped to 2nd for 4 matches, then to 3rd for 2 rounds and then jumped to 1st in round 12. Once I lost to Wolves in the 13th game I knew the title was over as they had an easy final game which was a disappointing end to the league campaign.

XD: Do you think you’ll be able to win the title next season, particularly in light of the fact that C.F Real Madrid have been promoted with an 11 point gap between 1st and 2nd?

Jkchops: Yes we certainly have a chance to although it will be much harder next time round. I think 5 or 6 teams could win the title next season as all the sides are strong and aren’t trying to rebuild with the exception being South Hooligans.

XD: Any teams in the lower divisions of the Dream League who could be future giants?

Jkchops: Yes probably but in all honesty I haven’t looked so couldn’t give any names.

XD: What do you think of the new tactics screen?

Jkchops: I don’t like it and switched back to the old tactics system within 5 minutes of trying it out. For me personally there is no benefit of using the new system unless of course it mattered whether you played quick players on the wings and players with LRS in the middle. The old system works well and shows me everything I need to know for setting my tactics.

XD: Is there anything you’d like to see included in the game?

Jkchops: Increasing sub selections to 7 players to fall in line with increasing squad numbers to 23 and the biggest positive change in the game for a while…..the ability to actively make subs. I’d also like more sub options such as leading by 3 goals or more and the ability to make subs before 45mins as some games are won/lost inside 25mins.
I would also like the effect of the 5 man midfield reduced and bring back the power of long balls to keep people guessing and building teams with variety rather than to play one way.

XD: Finally as an Arsenal fan, it’s been a fantastic start for you guys. Do you think Arsenal can win the title this season?

Jkchops:  It’s been an amazing start for us, much better than anyone expected and that includes 99% of Arsenal fans. It’s possible, if we can stay in the hunt come the January Transfer then hopefully we can buy a top quality striker, central defender and/or goalkeeper as that’s where we’re short of world class players.

As the curtain closes on an incredible Dream League season, we’ve got a glimpse of the League’s future. Teams like Spurs Kickers, Romania and Shadow City may be heading out and South Hooligans may not be a competitive force for some time, but when you have intensely close title battles between the likes of WolverhamptonWonders, Broken Foundation, Golden Goal and Falkarnas BK who needs them? Only 5 days to go until we all kick off again but until then, Xpert Daily congratulates WolverhamptonWonders and Broken Foundation and wishes them good luck in the Xpert Champions League. Until next time…
