Ultimate League celebrates 30 seasons
Following Season 29, questions were being raised as to whether Jesus and his Pandas could be stopped. AC Samba came mightily close last season to depriving them of the title but the Ultimate League hasn’t seen such domination since the days of F.C Sloga (and possibly Cormorans but they were only good in the league) and nobody aside from Rasaritul Delta has won three titles back in Ultimate League history. And this season would be the 30th season of the Ultimate League, an anniversary season if you will and with the Pandas having secured the league and cup double again, could anyone deprive them? Well, with the change report out of the way, age was starting to catch up with the Pandas and this resorted to them signing teenagers like Georgi Bobrov, James Berkeley and Geraldo Mendiguren. They were also beaten to the signing of Virgil Walker by Partizan Belgretna, a newly promoted Ultimate League side. Speaking of which…

What a field the Ultimate League had this season. The eight top flight teams could boast between them seven titles and seven cup wins. Season 23 and 25 champions Damocles were back in the top flight, as were the season 5 and 12 cup winners who’d gone under three different names, founded as Delfintio F.C for their first cup triumph, rebranded to Laosovi Tigrovi for their second and Ultimate League runners up as Trotters IT Peckham. And as season 30 got underway, having carried the Trotters IT Peckham name for 11 seasons, from here on in the club would be known as Guerrilla Renegades.

Partizan Belgretna won the cup in season 27 so all the teams promoted to the top flight had won something. This joins Jesus and his Pandas, Grand Rapids, AC Samba, Lusitanian Warriors and Cesaro Hyperforce in the top flight. The only top flight team not to have won anything was Lusitanian Warriors and they had finished 3rd last season, looking at one point like title challengers. Without a doubt it was one of the toughest Ultimate League top flights in history and in the Ultimate League’s 30th season too. And true to form, it would also produce one of the greatest seasons in Ultimate League history.

Damocles kicked off their return to the top flight by hosting the only debutants in the top flight this term, Partizan Belgretna. Unfortunately for the Damocles fans their return to the top flight was a rather embarrassing one as Partizan Belgretna turned on the style to win 3-0, Ambrosio Beca getting a double and Olgierd Hampel getting a third. Damocles were played off their own pitch and Partizan’s victory was only soured by an injury to Tiberio Landucci. Jesus and his Pandas started their title defence at home to Grand Rapids with a 2-1 victory while the two teams who finished 1st and 2nd in the league in season 20, Cesaro Hyperforce and Guerrilla Renegades met each other on the opening day. Back in season 20, Bkhilliard and Ross_smith_24 fought out a title battle in charge of their respective teams but both men have since moved on and Trozio and CRaPoLoGy now assume the positions as managers of the clubs. Sadly the game was barely entertaining as Cesaro Hyperforce played for a 0-0 draw and got it. Last season’s nearly men AC Samba began their campaign at home to Lusitanian Warriors which turned out to be a simple 1-0 win for Samba.

The third round saw some controversy after the Pandas decided to follow in the lead of Delta Q and Smooth Criminal of the Hattrick and Major Leagues respectively by deploying 16 year old Georgi Bobrov as the lone striker against AC Samba, which tore last season’s runners up to shreds but saw many in the community unimpressed. Grand Rapids manager Quercus stated after the game “More Michelep style teams is something this game does not need. It is dodgy when a nobody decides they don't need forwards, it is criminal when a high profile manager decides to go this route. We need to fix this.” Suffice to say though, at the early stages in the league it looked like two other teams were rising to the challenge of preventing the Pandas from winning three in a row and they were both newly promoted teams. Partizan Belgretna were the only team who hadn’t played in the top flight before but had enjoyed a 100% start to the new season while the Renegades sat in 2nd ahead of a huge match against Jesus and his Pandas. That match finished in a victory for the Pandas and with Partizan Belgretna only able to draw against AC Samba, the gap was cut to just a single point.

Partizan Belgretna had enjoyed a fine start to the season but finally succumbed to defeat against what were then title rivals Guerrilla Renegades. Giacomo Cucciari went off injured and reserve keeper Veniamyn Mandrykin could do nothing to stop Rackner and Jarsteinen from making it 2-0. This turned out to be a great result for the Renegades as Jesus and his Pandas needed a 93rd minute Stanisa Klincec free kick against Cesaro Hyperforce to take even at least 1 point. This closed up the gap at the top, with Guerrilla Renegades, Jesus and his Pandas and Partizan Belgretna all on the same number of points, but lurking behind them all were the Panda’s conquerors Lusitanian Warriors, just one point behind the leading three and very much the quiet men of the early rounds in the league..

The Renegades season soon took a turn for the worse, a loss to Lusitanian Warriors effectively killed their title chances. Both Grand Rapids and AC Samba were in relegation trouble and Cesaro Hyperforce looked like they were going to drop out of the top flight after 14 consecutive seasons. Grand Rapids got a crucial away victory at the Sambarello to lift themselves out of trouble whilst dumping AC Samba in it. It was a pretty crazy relegation zone, all of the bottom four were former champions with Grand Rapids, AC Samba, Cesaro Hyperforce and Damocles all in a relegation fight.

Jesus and his Pandas went top of the league for the first time this season after thrashing Damocles, just two days before both teams got underway in the XCL, albeit the Pandas had the same points total as Partizan Belgretna with only goal difference separating them. The second big encounter between Partizan and Guerrilla, this time at the Estadio Belgretna, where a Dwight Hawkins-less Renegades were 1 second away from beating Partizan in their own backyard but a dramatic last minute goal by Olgierd Hampel robbed the Renegades of three points. In truth, one of these sides needed to win to keep pace with the Pandas, but an injury to Georgi Bobrov bumped up the Pandas average age in the match and saw Hyperforce equalise, although this was ruled out and Bobrov’s replacement Feliszek sealed the victory for the Pandas which kept Hyperforce in danger. It was looking extremely bad for Hyperforce now, their mammoth long stay in the Ultimate League top flight looked to be coming to an end, while Grand Rapids were also in trouble after losing to Lusitanian Warriors at the same time that AC Samba beat Damocles.

Two massive encounters for the Pandas followed, two away games to Partizan Belgretna and Guerrilla Renegades. The reaction to the Partizan game has already been covered here but in the Renegades game they took an attitude of “if we can’t win the title, then neither are you” and managed to hold the Pandas to a 2-2 draw, which the Warriors took advantage of with a victory over Cesaro Hyperforce. They were now the closest challengers.

It was a far closer league than last season, so much so that 3rd place Partizan Belgretna were only 6 points ahead of 6th placed Grand Rapids. Jesus and his Pandas were top by two points but still had to face Lusitanian Warriors in Round 13. They played AC Samba in the hope of maintaining that lead while Samba would need something out of the game should Grand Rapids get something at Cesaro Hyperforce, who’s 14 consecutive seasons in the Ultimate League top flight were about to come to end (in preparation for this a few key players like Este Olive and Emmanuel Rodas were sold off). We always knew it would happen eventually and with the competition this season so high, this was proving to be a season too far for them. Damocles were effectively relegated, 9 points behind and a massive negative goal difference meant it would require a miracle for them to survive. Lusitanian Warriors had to beat Partizan Belgretna to stay in the hunt ahead of the big game against the Pandas.

The Warriors secured victory against a development focused Partizan Belgretna thanks to goals from Raul Gron and Ze Alguem. Tiberio Landucci made them fight for it but the Warriors had secured a victory to set up a massive clash against Jesus and his Pandas in Round 13. The Pandas were at the site of their last title triumph and a lone goal from Damiano Varriale kept their noses in front of the Pandas. Now Samba had to hope that the big game between Cesaro Hyperforce and Grand Rapids, two clubs who have prided themselves on keeping a consistent line of talent coming through (well, Cesaro did under Bkhilliard) and would hope that Hyperforce’s home advantage would help see them through. Unfortunately for them, Hyperforce were already looking to the future and didn’t really take the game to Grand Rapids, who dominated their opponents but the season long conversion problem was persisting. Finally though, Danny Carter made the breakthrough in the 75th minute and Mike Evers added another to end Cesaro Hyperforce’s 14 season stay in the top flight, joining Damocles in the relegation zone. Amazingly, three former Ultimate League champions were going to be relegated this season. Damocles were down, Cesaro Hyperforce were down and one of Grand Rapids or AC Samba would join them.

So the next round of fixtures would be decisive. If the Pandas won their match against Lusitanian Warriors in Matchday 13 then they would win the title. Any other result would see it go to the final day, with a Lusitanian Warriors victory meaning that matching or bettering the Pandas result in the final game of the season would see Tiago’s men crowned champions. In his press release before the game, Tiago described the game against the Pandas as “Mission Impossible: Part I”. Normally you’d think this would be a straight forward victory for the Pandas but Tiago had beaten the Pandas at home the previous season and had already beaten them this season in the reverse fixture. Team news came in and the Pandas lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Alnerud, Abdul-Latif, Bornes, Gutierrez, Yamase, Abella, Szilard, Dallmann, Vane, Klincec and Daniel. Lusitanian Warriors meanwhile lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with Kassine, Goitom, Prasinha, Weissenhauser, Pirelli, Berberich, Bjarne Hansen, Gron, Konichawa, Rodas and Alguem. Ian Hartmann got underway a potential title decider, could the Pandas seal the title here? No. Amazingly the Pandas lost 2-1 to Lusitanian Warriors on their own field and now they were title favourites and would win with victory over AC Samba

Speaking of AC Samba, they and Grand Rapids were fighting over that last relegation spot in an attempt to stay up. AC Samba had a game against Guerrilla Renegades while Grand Rapids were against Partizan Belgretna. Not ideal fixtures to have in your run-in but at least they were both home games which gave both teams hope to get something from the games. With a title challenge out of the question but the Renegades safe in the top flight (the first time they had survived in the top flight since season 21) they went ahead and fielded a reserve team. This led to a victory for AC SambaThe pressure was on Grand Rapids then as they needed to beat Partizan Belgretna to stay one point ahead of AC Samba, which in turn would also put Partizan Belgretna in relegation trouble. But that proved to be the difference, Guerrilla Renegades had nothing to play for whereas Partizan Belgretna did and Jed Winter’s shot after Alberto Boder’s corner gave Partizan a vital three points away at Grand Rapids to dump them back into the relegation zone. All the results in the top flight had gone against Quercus’ men and here is where it gets interesting.

With the Warriors now just one point ahead of the Pandas, the only matters left to solve were who was going to win the title and who was going to be relegated but in an interesting twist, they would be decided in the same matches. The title contenders, Lusitanian Warriors and Jesus and his Pandas, played the relegation battlers, AC Samba and Grand Rapids, so whoever won the title would also decide who was relegated. It was impossible for Grand Rapids to stay up and Jesus and his Pandas to win the title at the same time as they played each other while AC Samba and Lusitanian Warriors played each other. What made this even more interesting was that Lusitanian Warriors were without their best midfielder Marco Pirelli and their best striker Ignazio Rodas, two players that have often carried the team.

Preparations for the four teams involved in this showdown would be crucial. Grand Rapids prepared for their crunch game against the Pandas by literally crunching chicken down as Quercus took his team out for a meal, while AC Samba’s manager fuelled speculation over his future by considering alternate employment, having a job interview just days before the final round of matches. The club will be hoping to retain their longest serving manager for next season.. The Pandas had secured a thrilling 4-2 win over Askk United in the XCL as they prepared to face a potential title deciding match, but knowing that they would also need a favour from AC Samba to secure the title.

The players and managers came into Riverside Park and Endovelicus Sanctuary for the biggest game of the season, well, nearly all of the managers. Amazingly, TiagoM, manager of league leaders Lusitanian Warriors, failed to turn up for his side’s crucial game against AC Samba, who benched their best defender Love Ankarberg and fielded several reserves. Grand Rapids did the same against the Pandas, clearly DV was a priority for both these teams. So, what could have been a fairly straight forward task for the Warriors turned into one of the most dramatic finishes in Ultimate League history, right up there with Cricket Utd losing 3-0 to relegated D.T.S 1972 on the final day of the season to concede the title to Damocles. A 2-0 away win for Samba combined with a 4-0 win for Jesus and his Pandas secured survival for AC Samba in the most unlikeliest of circumstances.

Meanwhile, at Riverside Park a few glum faces on the Grand Rapids players as Quercus’ team were heading down after four consecutive seasons in the top flight. Quercus had once said his ambitions were to win the title with his team and then emulate Cesaro Hyperforce by continually staying in the top flight, but unfortunately for him the standard of the league was so high this year and the need to change goalkeepers has seen them go from a title challenging team to one battling relegation. Division 1 beckons for them next season and the players could only look on while their opponents celebrated a third successive title, the types of players who are born winners. Jesus and his Pandas, the first team since Rasaritul Delta to win the title three seasons in a row, and when you read on later, you’ll see that this achievement has an even bigger context. Maybe the Warriors didn’t think the title was possible, certainly Tom was surprised after the matches at the ease in which Grand Rapids accepted relegation. In fact, the XD reckons Tom was the most surprised out of anyone, given that he was preparing for what he thought would be a tough match only for his opponent not to turn up and then at how his nearest relegation rival played for DV rather than trying to fight to stay up.

So, after a long and hard anniversary season the final table looked like this:

Place Team GP W D L GF-GA Diff P
1 Jesus and his Pandas 14 9 3 2 28 - 10 18 30
2 Lusitanian Warriors 14 9 1 4 20 - 14 6 28
3 Partizan Belgretna 14 7 3 4 24 - 15 9 24
4 Guerrilla Renegades 14 5 6 3 19 - 9 10 21
5 AC Samba 14 6 2 6 17 - 18 -1 20
6 Grand Rapids FC 14 3 6 5 13 - 18 -5 15
7 Cesaro HyperForce 14 2 4 8 10 - 23 -13 10
8 Damocles 14 1 3 10 5 - 29 -24 6

So Grand Rapids FC, Cesaro Hyperforce and Damocles, three former Ultimate League champions, were all heading down. In their places, FK Deverika, Myrmidonians FC and Spirit of Shankly FC, all teams who had never been in the very top of the Ultimate League, would be promoting to the top flight. We wish them all the best of luck next season and you can find out more about these teams in next season's review.

Cup

Unfortuantely the original cup article had to be scrapped due to being too long winded so I will condense the key happenings round by round. First note, the introduction of Division 8 this season meant that many teams were facing easy opposition in the second round of the cup. As such, there were no major casualties amongst the big teams in the second round.

Round 4:
- Compass Rose go out to Jesus and his Pandas
- Last season's finalists Damocles suffer shock exit to Division 4 side Yiddos
- Cesaro Hyperforce fell to Action Zero, meaning there were six top flight sides left.

Round 5:

- Tie of the round, Jesus and his Pandas vs. F.C RAPID ends in a simple Pandas victory.
- Partizan Belgretna fall to Division 4 side PLC FC in extra time

Round 6:
- Myrmidonians FC, the team leading Division 1b, fall to the Pandas
- Damocles conquerers Yiddos fall to Stiinta Bacau
- Grand Rapids decide they’d had enough of the cup and lose on penalties to the Rod Squad

Round 7:
- Two former title winning managers, Neno4 (season 4) and Tomj782 (season 26), square up, with AC Samba beating Steppenwolf Suckers
- Thriller between two time cup winners Athletico Llamedos and Tardy Hardy

Round 8:
- Jesus and his Pandas vs. Guerilla Renegades, one of the biggest games of the tournament, ends in a 2-0 win to the Pandas.
- My-Tee Athletic's long cup run ends with a defeat to Stiinta Bacau.
- Lusitanian Warriors fall to Berlin Kapitals in extra time
- Calandracas CF, one of the strongest teams left, fall to lowly Pistachus (note, they were renamed as of Season 31)

Round of last 16:

- The Religion of Para 0-2 Jesus and his Pandas
- Stiinta Bacau 1-0 The Rod Squad
- Pistachus 3-5 AC Samba
- La Armonia’s Revenge 1-0 Tardy Hardy
- Archangel 0-1 FK Deverika
- The boys Madeira 6-5 La Veire Chappelle
- Myrgasa United 1-0 Berlin Kapitals
- George Best XI vs. Dave FC

Quarter Finals:

- Jesus and his Pandas 1-0 FK Deverika
- AC Samba 2-0 Stiinta Bacau
- The boys Madeira 4-2 Myrgasa United
- La Armonia’s Revenge 1-2 George Best XI

Semi Finals:
- George Best XI 6-5 The boys Madeira
- Jesus and his Pandas 2-0 AC Samba

The Final

The 30th Ultimate League cup final would be between Jesus and his Pandas of the Ultimate League and George Best XI of Division 2b... The Pandas were in their fourth cup final while George Best XI were appearing for the very first time at this stage. There was a very long build up to this cup final and extensive clips from the cup’s history were played to the fans in the run-up to celebrate the competition’s 30th anniversary, from what was finally known as AFC Fiorentina lifting the cup for the very first time, to the Orange Moose’s repeated thwarted attempts to win the cup, Rasaritul Delta claiming the cup after three seasons of league trophies to add to their cabinet, Laosovi Tigrovi becoming the first team to win the cup twice, F.C Sloga’s double exploits, Athletico Llamedos’ cup triumphs, Jesus and his Pandas’ first cup final where they were beaten by Spirit of Shankly while today’s stars were in their early 20s, joy at last and a legacy sealed for the Xpert Knights’ old team as his successor staged an upset to beat Cesaro Hyperforce with a 5-2-3 formation, to the beaten Pandas from season 23 coming of age and dominating the cup in recent seasons.

Naturally there was a lot of banter in the build-up, with Bcmcdermott proclaiming “can't wait for the draw tonight to see who we get in the next round”. Jesus responded with “You are more than likely to get drawn against a team full of old bastards. Easy win for you Mcdermott.” Mcdermott then noticed that Pandas keeper Freddie Alnerud was slightly injured and responded with “Jesus, your goalie looks a bit fragile?” The comeback? “All of my players are fragile. If you don't beat me then you are a paedophile.”

Onto the teams, Jesus and his Pandas need no introduction; they’ve BEEN the Ultimate League for these past three seasons, the face of the league in XCL competition and joined a select few teams last season on the site by winning back to back doubles. If they won the double again, they would achieve something only ever achieved on Xpert Eleven before by Boltrelli BK/Snow Patrol/The Perishers/Epsilon Aliens by winning three consecutive doubles. Their cup run started in the second round with a two legged game against Division 8 side emirhan, who naturally stood no chance. Next up was a 6-0 win over King and Miller FC and a convincing victory over Compass Rose which was then followed by the toughest cup run possible. F.C RAPID, Myrmidonians FC, Old Hoes (OK, maybe not that one), Guerrilla Renegades, The Religion of Para, FK Deverika and AC Samba all fell to the might of the Pandas and now George Best XI were the only side standing in their way of Xpert Eleven immortality.

George Best XI are likely to be an unknown quantity to many XD readers so let’s correct that. Way back in season 9 of the Ultimate League, a Northern Irishman by the name of Bcmcdermott started a career in management with the club “Save Chip Reserves”. After two seasons in Division 7, they went on a winning run up the divisions. Six consecutive promotions and it looked like this team were going to go a long way but Division 2 proved to be a struggle for this team and they soon dropped down. Among the team that went on that long promotion run, Toirdhealbhach Kerry and Djibrille Ayraut are the only surviving members. Relegation from Division 2 followed and the club set about trying to get back into Division 2, now renamed “George Best XI”. But after two failed play-off attempts the club went down a division instead of up one, however, back to back promotions saw them back in Division 2. Which brings us to this season, where GBXI were a long way behind The Rod Squad but had a chance of the play-offs. Their cup exploits however had catapulted them into the knowledge of the public and all of a sudden, 21 seasons after being founded, George Best XI were in the biggest match in the club’s history.

The all English speaking community dominance of the Ultimate League in recent seasons was set to continue with this game. Naturally, as they had been all season, the Pandas were the favourites for the trophy but George Best XI had shown tremendous fighting spirit to get into this stage after a hard fought win over The boys Madeira in the semi-finals. Captains Octavian Szilard and Leonardo Girao led the teams out into the famous Xpert Arena for the final time this season. Team selections would be interesting for sure although it’s fair to say both sides had a strongest XI. The Pandas surprised no-one by opting for a 4-5-1 formation with their strongest side possible. Their lineup was as follows:

21 GK Freddie Alnerud

2 DF Basim Abdul-Latif
5 DF Rico Bornes
6 DF Samuel Gutierrez
13 DF Yukihiko Yamase

7 MF Vidal Abella
8 MF Octavian Szilard
10 MF Boris Dallmann
14 MF Damiano Varriale
11 MF Stanisa Kilncec

15 FW Georgi Bobrov

Bench:
3 DF Jurjen Stroeve
4 MF Maart Vane
16 MF James Berkeley
12 FW Jakub Feliszek
18 FW Cesar Daniel

George Best XI meanwhile decided to opt for the element of surprise by playing a 4-3-3 formation. Amazingly, Gilberto Ferreira, who had done so much to help George Best XI to get the final, was left on the BENCH. Bcmcdermott was relying on a three pronged attack of Tobias Nandorf, Knut Ekenberg and Finn Charlton to try and break down the Pandas. It was a risky strategy as George Best XI only have 3 strikers but nevertheless, this was their team:

26 GK Lincoln Day

2 DF Toirdhealbhach Kerry
10 DF Dino Pelletieri
6 DF Thiago Silva
3 DF César Champalimaud

8 MF Eric Cartman
13 MF Maxwell Fletcher
14 MF Leonardo Girão

21 FW Tobias Nandorf
11 FW Knut Ekenberg
22 FW Finn Charlton

Bench:
5 DF Alvito Saraiva
15 DF Raffaello Nocara
7 MF Matt Weeks
9 MF Djibrille Ayraut
18 MF Gilberto Ferreira

Such an occasion deserved a referee of the highest calibre to referee the game. Unfortunately the Ultimate League FA failed to realise this and appointed Charlie Fender as the ref for the match. Missing the point a bit there… Anyway, the match got underway with Dallmann and Bobrov kicking off. It was a cagey opening to the game with the Pandas and George Best XI trying to get a foothold on the ball but eventually the first chance fell to Boris Dallmann but he failed to convert from his header. In the 17th minute a miss-hit shot on goal by Georgi Bobrov was turned over by Lincoln Day. It was fair to say that nobody was surprised to see the Pandas dominating. Eventually, that dominance told as in the 29th minute, Boris Dallmann delivered a powerful low shot past Lincoln Day after being fed by teammate Varriale. Dallmann immediately ran to the corner flag and stretched his arms out, before being hugged by Varriale and Szilard. Meanwhile, on the touchline, Bcmcdermott was seen to whisper to Jesus1983 by saying “We took it easy on you, now the real game starts”. Jesus responded with “Nah, I’m pretty sure you’ll win this game”. That didn’t seem likely when Charlie Fender awarded a penalty in the 40th minute. Vidal Abella scored two penalties in the crucial Champions League encounter against Askk United two days beforehand and was looking to make it three penalties in three days. However, George Best’s goalkeeper Lincoln Day produced a magnificent save to keep the score at 1-0. Jesus then told Bcmcdermott “See, I told you.” Was he trying to pass the pressure onto George Best XI? If he was, then Bcmcdermott wasn’t having any of it. “We got lucky”, he responded. His side must have continued to “get lucky” then as the three pronged attack worked wonders for the team when they had their first chance of the game. Finn Charlton’s flick header on goal from Maxwell Fletcher’s corner was enough to beat the Pandas’ star goalkeeper Freddie Alnerud. Amazingly, the scoreline read 1-1. Were the Pandas really going to throw it away? Perhaps the whistle came at the wrong time for George Best XI though just as soon as they were getting into the game.

Second half kicked off and in the 49th minute Cesar Champalimaud tripped Georgi Bobrov on the edge of the area and gave away a free kick. And if there’s one player you do not want to give the opportunity to take free kicks, it’s Stanisa Klincec. True to form, he delivered a thunderbolt past Day to restore the Pandas’ lead and made it 2-1. The Pandas fans in the ground then put their hands together facing upwards following the manic celebrations, with Jesus also celebrating manically on the touchline. Bcmcdermott was also celebrating manically on the touchline for some odd reason. It had turned out that he had won the lottery and was being informed by his assistant manager. Nevertheless, it did look a bit weird for those who weren’t watching. The Pandas continued to dominate with Boris Dallmann being among the forefront of their opportunities. He did however miss three opportunities in a row. Vidal Abella tried to do better but was unable to beat Day, but it was 84 minutes into the tie and it was looking bleak for George Best XI. Ultimately, Abella’s effort proved to be the last effort of the game. Jesus and his Pandas’ retained the cup for the second successive season. It was their fourth Ultimate League cup triumph and their third in a row, they were now the most successful club in Ultimate League cup history and three days later secured the Ultimate League title to become the first team since Epsilon Aliens to win the double for three consecutive seasons. For the record, Epsilon Aliens and Jesus and his Pandas are the only team to accomplish such a feat.

Possession: 62 - 38 (62-38)
Chances: 9 - 1 (4-1)

Home - Man Of The Match - Away

Following the end of the game, Jesus1983 ran onto the pitch to celebrate with his players. Amazingly, Bcmcdermott did the exact same thing and why not, there still was a slight chance his team could be playing Xpert Champions League football following the conclusion of this season and this was confirmed on Monday when the Pandas won the league to join the cup they’d just won. The media were able to grab a few reaction sound bites from the managers. Bcmcdermott told reporters after the match “Right, I must go and set my team up for the cup final tonight, I really think we have a chance. ..” Later on, Jesus revealed that he’d only offered his players a measly 50 000 econ for winning the match, probably the lowest win bonus in any cup final ever. The two managers were in close proximity with their media interviews however with BC responding with “can't believe you even NEEDED a win bonus”

Cup Stats:
Top points Scorer: Stanisa Klincec (Jesus and his Pandas) – 19
Top goal scorer: Fernando Deiberson (The boys Madeira) – 13
Top assists: Stanisa Klincec (Jesus and his Pandas) – 11
MVP: Octavian Szilard (Jesus and his Pandas) - 10

Now, normally we would interview the cup winner on their season and cup triumph or in this case, the double winner, however, because there have already been five major interviews with Jesus over the last year (three for MOTW, two for doing the double), we decided to mix things up a bit. Instead of asking questions to Jesus, we thought we would get the thoughts of the other Ultimate League top flight managers, as well as the league admin, on the Pandas and their recent dominance of the UL. First up, the man who was the last team to win the title before the Pandas started dominating the league, Mr. Quercus, take it away:

XD: You’ve been in the Ultimate League top flight for four seasons now and won the Ultimate League in the first, but ever since then you’ve seen the Pandas come into the top flight and raise the standards while your team have gradually slipped down the order. You mentioned in a press release how annoying it has been to reach the top flight at the same time as the Pandas but what do you make of the recent domination of Jesus’ team?

Quercus: The Pandas are probably the best team or the second best team in the history of the UL (FC Sloga has a similar resume), so there is no shame in being dominated by a team like that. The frustration has less to do with Jesus as a manager (he has earned my respect here, and in another league) and more to do the underlying structure of his team. It is very difficult to show up on top form week after week when you have a lineup that is developing. My team is a continuous mix of early 30's, older 20's, mid 20's in the starting 11. My backups are young 20's and teens. As such, an injury to one of the starting 11 provides a serious drop off in talent, whereas on a team like the Panda's, there is no drop off, because the team has been built to have 13 now (15 in the past) all same aged starters. They reached maturity as he arrived at the club, and haven't lost a season since. Moreover, even when my team was at its strongest (in Jesus first year in the top flight), his 28-30 year olds were stronger than my mix of 24-33 year olds. So that is where part of the frustration comes from, being hindered by the sustainable ethic that my team is designed around.

XD: Explain to casual readers why it is so hard to set a team up to face the Pandas.

Quercus: The Panda's were built by a very good manager named StellaRosa. He set up the team after taking over the side while it was in the top flight (Back when the side was Philbin2004’s FC Giv Me That™ – Ed). At that time, the game delivered a very different mix of youth talents in a radically different transfer market economy. Simply put, they were built at a time when building a team like this was expensive and difficult. He sold some of the best players in the UL to fund the development of a super team. End result, they are, for their cohort of teams in the UL, peerless. I never faced the team when it was managed by StellaRosa, but my take on him was that he was a top rate manager but only an average tactician. Jesus on the other hand is a very good tactician. So when he arrives on the scene and takes over a club with almost no weaknesses, he can tactically set things up to make beating him nearly impossible. Therein lies the frustration. Most teams, if you don't have some clear tendencies to work off of, you can set up in what I would call "base tactics" that maximize your chances given the ref, where the match is, and how each team plays on the road or at home. In a way, it is like leaning on slightly smaller person in a pushing contest, you rely on your mass to win, not just your technique. If Jesus were a less talented manager, you could probably find some tactical weaknesses to leverage your mass to beat the better "heavier" team. But in this case, he doesn't give you much, so you either have to play base and hope to get lucky with the odds that favour him, or you to gamble on the tactics, taking risks that are low odds in the hope of securing the win.

We played seven times so far, only five of those were serious matches, and he won all five. The other two I decided to get some DV for kids and he crushed us. So I am 0 for 7 against the Pandas. In three of the matches, I set things up nearly perfectly at home and had a very good chance to take the win. In one match, I had my best defender get a red cross injury in minute one, in the other, I had a starter get a straight red card, playing normal at home vs. a 5,7. Third match was the Cup Quarterfinals, where the winner is probably the favourite to win the Cup. I matched him for chances, but again had a red cross to my 16 bar striker in minute 4 and then a red card to a starting midfielder while playing normal against a 6,3 ref. In each of these cases, I think we had the better leverage when you consider tactics and team strength, but we had bad luck. Jesus on the other hand has at least in our matches, been stronger, luckier and on a few occasions, better tactically. Combine all three, and you have a manager/team that is nearly unbeatable without help from the game engine, which leads us back to the frustration.

XD: The Pandas are the first team on Xpert Eleven since Epsilon Aliens to win three consecutive doubles. Did you ever envisage them being this successful when they gained promotion?

Quercus: Absolutely, you can see teams like this from a distance. Watch them climb up the league, see them overachieving in the cup with a team full of 25 year olds... They are built for success and very rare, so it is natural to expect great things from them, not just in the UL, but at the next level as well.

XD: Finally, you saw your team relegated from the top flight this season. Will you be aiming to get straight back up there and will a run like Cesaro Hyperforce's 14 consecutive seasons in the UL top flight be ever matched again?

Quercus: This was our weakest season for some time. With a conveyor team you have to turn over the old for the new, and this year we went from our veteran 17 bar goal keeper to the understudy who is only 14 bars. End result, we were in danger all season. Add in a month long injury, some questionable tactics and odd results, and down we go.

I think that we can climb back up next season. If you look at the team match ratings for the league, we are still a top 5 team, even with a 14 skiller in net and a trio of 22-23 year olds playing in the starting 11. I don't think it will be easy, but we should be able to return and hang around another 5 seasons or so until we have to do the next GK swap.

As for BKHilliard's team, I can't see them being matched. They started in a different era, teams were not as strong as they are now, and I think that they were able to use the conveyor to greater effect than most teams today. Also they are one of the best home team's in the UL's history. Nothing helps a mediocre team to hang on more than a huge home field advantage. It will take a very special manager and team to break their record.

Speaking of Cesaro Hyperforce, we also managed to catch up with their manager Trozio, who saw his club relegated after said 14 season consecutive season stay in the top flight (although only three of which he was manager). However, despite running into the same problems as Quercus and all the other UL managers when facing the Pandas, he was the only manager to get a higher star rating against them during the season. We sat down for a quick chat to ask him a few questions on those matches and the future of Cesaro Hyperforce.

XD: Despite not defeating the Pandas, you were the only manager who managed to nail them tactically twice and only because of a weaker squad and development in the second game were you unable to get a victory over them. Do you feel this shows that you need more than 5* tactics in order to beat the Pandas?

Trozio: Not necessarily in my opinion. But I do not believe being the right person to answer to this question. When you have such a weaker team, most of the time it is easier to surprise the opponent. Most of all, probably Pandas have lowered their guard with us, that made me look so talented.

XD: Has it helped being in the league during the three seasons in which the Pandas have dominated or do you think you have just cottoned on to his tactics over the course of facing him the previous two seasons?

Trozio:  I do not wish to be compared as a manager to Jesus, as it would be blaspheme. But I have reasons to believe that we tend to imagine football in the same way. It becomes then more likely to predict someone's minds when you carried by the same wavelength.

XD: At Cesaro Hyperforce it hasn’t gone well for you this season. Relegation from the top flight, only the club’s third relegation in its entire history. Do you plan to stick around the team next season and if so, what are your plans for the team?

Trozio: When I took over this position, this team was packed for a relegation. A bunch of skilled oldies, for sure, but young lads were not skilled enough to give some lymph to such a historic team. That is why I am very satisfied that the guys gave their best to stay in the top division for two years more, even though everybody was stronger than us. We will probably sink for a few seasons, but I am more than determined to keep this team alive and back again between the Ultimate League fellows.

Another former Ultimate League winning title manager whose team were recently relegated was Thunderbroom. He came late to the Pandas party having been relegated the season before they started dominating the league but came to the fore again recently with promotion back to the top flight and a cup final defeat against the Pandas. We caught up with him to discuss side construction and get his thoughts on them as a side.

XD: You faced Jesus and his Pandas in the cup final last season and twice again this season. While your side hasn’t been in a state to properly challenge the Pandas, what do you make of them as a side?

Thunderbroom: I'm not sure whether even at their peak Damocles would have been able to live with the Pandas over the course of a season. They tend to consistently reach a level of performance that's nigh on impossible to match, they are just relentless. We gave them a rattle in the Cup final and but for an oversight on my part we might have taken them the distance but in truth we were always on the back foot. Jesus would be the first to admit that he has benefitted from the work StellaRosa did in assembling the Panda's squad initially. SR was a trader, an exceptional one at that, an exceptional one at that, and he built the foundations of a title winning squad but for whatever reason he couldn't or wouldn't see them home. I was delighted to see someone like Jesus take them over at the time as he had pedigree and the ability to get the job done. It would have been a travesty to see that squad and its undoubted potential in the hands of a lesser gaffer. He took them from Division 2 to the top and has been untouchable ever since and I wouldn't bet against him giving it another spin next term.

XD: It took your side three seasons in the top flight to claim their first title and another two to gain a second. When you see a side like the Pandas claim three consecutive doubles upon promotion to the top flight, does it make you consider the positives of the all same age approach or are you happy with your own approach to the game?

Thunderbroom: I would never stick with an all youth approach as it would bore me. Yes, it has its advantages and ultimately, pound for pound, it probably offers the best odds on getting a return in terms of outright success but it's not for me. Each to their own though and I do enjoy looking at some of the sides that develop under that approach. It's not an easy task and for every monster side that emerges from the lower ranks dozens of others that followed the same path crash and burn. As for Damocles, my current travails are directly attributable to my second title. I had plans for a rebuild to refresh the squad but we landed an unexpected title and everything went on hold. I persisted with the squad as was for a season too far and now I'm having to deal with a musty crop of fogies that stink of incontinence and despair. Like alcoholism though, the first step is admitting you have a problem, I still see hope for Damocles but that may well be denial. For me, my time in the top flight was always about the opponent and never about the title. I enjoyed pitting myself against the best the Ultimate League had to offer on a weekly basis, the titles were just gravy.

You must be exhausted from the amount of reading so far but don’t go yet, we still have another three interviews to go, although thankfully they are all short ones. Next, we have the former champion that was in relegation danger all season but was the one who managed to stay up, AC Samba.  Mr. Tomj782 spoke to the XD on his frustration against the Pandas and that memorable season finale.

XD: Your team has perhaps had more trouble against the Pandas than others. 0 wins, 0 draws and 7 losses, including one that cost you the title. The Pandas’ first team are all the same age while your team’s ages are staggered, is there any regret in the way you built AC Samba and if you were to build the team now, would you follow a similar model to the Pandas?

Tomj782: They're a serious bogey team and have probably directly hurt our trophy cabinet more than anybody else’s too!

It's a straightforward model which I'd follow in a shorter, private league, but in the Official leagues I'm not sure I'd have the patience. The spine of the Pandas was signed 4 years ago, by a previous manager. Jesus has said they are mostly hard trainers which I consider a big factor in their continued success, but we haven't done bad. We've won one title and I'm sure it would have been a second at their expense had we taken a more cautious approach that day we only needed a draw at home. That's our only real regret.

XD: You managed to survive relegation on the final day of the season, but did it surprise you to see Tiago’s team selection and tactics in the big game considering he needed to win the game to win the title?

Tomj782: Yes that was a bit of a shocker. I set up properly but played my young keeper who needed a game whilst counting on Jesus and his Pandas beating my old rival Grand Rapids FC. It was good to survive, but I'm sorry to see Grand Rapids go down and it was a kick in the teeth to hand the title to Jesus after he cost us a trophy in one off games each of the last 2 seasons; that assuming the winner of our recent semi-final would go all the way of course.

XD: Finally, with the Pandas rebuilding next season and Grand Rapids relegated, who do you think will win the title? Are you going to have another shot at it yourself?

Tomj782: For sure, we will have a stronger midfield next season, and probably a stronger team for it. Edwin Denton will be moved on to generate funds with Tedesco/Rodriguez coming in to keep the average age down. It will be wide open I think, any of the 4 that finished above us could go all the way and FK Deverika coming up will look strong with a decent change report, though their defence could perhaps need freshening up. I'll stick my neck out and say Pandas, despite getting old they maintain great from courtesy of all the hard trainers, and of course they have an excellent manager. (This is what happens when you have an interviewer that constantly assumes things guys – Ed)

Fellow top flight side Guerrilla Renegades’ manager CRaPoLoGy had a very strong side himself over the season but ended up so far behind the Pandas. We caught up with him to ask why that might be the case.

XD: You only came into the top flight this season but in terms of squad strength you had a team that was right up there with the Pandas. Yet over two league games and a cup game you found your team thoroughly outclassed. Explain to readers why they are so hard to play against.

CRaPoLoGy: Well, unfortunately, this wasn't our luckiest season. We lost critical points against weaker teams and lost 4 other points in the dying moments of the game. We were just unable to finish up the matches and injuries were a factor as well. Jesus and his Pandas were still stronger than our team, so it's no surprised we only managed a draw in 3 games against them. The season was lost against other teams...

XD: Jesus has declared his intentions to rebuild his team during the off-season. Do you think your team will be able to step up to the plate next season to compete for the title or do you envisage running into problems next season?

CRaPoLoGy: I think we'll be right up there competing for the title next season, but as we all know - this game is so unpredictable, you never know...Our squad is getting older, so we need to find a solution for the average age as well. Guerrilla Renegades will most definitely fight for both trophies, as we always do, but once again we'll have our work cut out for us...

And finally, with UL managers now exhausted, we managed to catch up with the Ultimate League admin himself, DegerforsIF, to ask some questions on the state of the league and what he sees the future of the league.

XD: You have been admin of the Ultimate League for over three seasons now. During your time as admin you’ve seen the Ultimate League go from an ultra-competitive league to one dominated by Jesus and his Pandas. What do you make of the Pandas domination of the league and how do you feel this presents the Ultimate League to the rest of the site?

DegerforsIF: I think it's both admirable and fantastic that he can dominate the way he does. I'm always thinking, when will someone else step up to the throne and be the champion? Never? Right now, it seems like he's got the grip for a very long time. I think that inspires other managers to someday become the new "Jesus" in the league. However, it really does to me.

XD: As league admin you and your assistants regularly have to take player requests and police the PRs written in the league. During that time you must have checked out some of the squads in the other divisions, are there any teams that you’ve faced in the league or ones you’ve seen on admin duties that have impressed you?

DegerforsIF: Well. I usually don't have much time to police the PR myself, I leave that to my assistants. But I do player requests and get a lot of mails, so of course I've seen some other interesting teams. Mostly, it's the teams that writes a lot on the scribble that you pays most attention to, and I think all of us has seen Wixie28's team Under Construction. Probably, he'll change the name of his team when he's dominating Ultimate League the way Jesus does now.

In other cases, you don't really spend a lot of time checking out other squads, so I really haven't thought about it that way. So I stay with Wixie28's team. And my own, of course, hehe.

XD: Do you think an Ultimate League team will ever win the Xpert Champions League?

DegerforsIF: So, it has never happened? Well, if so, it's time for a change. I'm not quite religious, so I really don't believe in God or Jesus. But I do believe in Pandas :)

So, it seems the UL managers aren’t so ready to believe that Jesus will rebuild the team next season. Well, whether this is the last chapter for such a great team or whether there is one more tale to be written, whether it will be a KBM Whitsunday style rebuild where the stars are sold off throughout the season while the team stays top or if the team will be kept together throughout the season, Season 31 could be the start of a new era in UL history or it could be the continuation of a legacy. In fact, we at the Xpert Daily can reveal that three time double winning players Jurjen Stroeve and Maart Vane have already left the club, following Howard Boothroyd out of the champions so it appears the rebuilding process is already underway somewhat. All three of them are legends, just as the rest of the JahP squad and their manager is. We wish them the best of luck in the future.
