Hattrick League celebrates 40 seasons
So, when we last left you, the Hattrick League top flight was looking very competitive. How did the second half of the season pan out then? Its time to find out

ROUND 8

Real Bucuresti 0-1 Bolt Thrower (Alcoforado ’22)
Gloomy Bear 1-3 The AntiChrists (McEnroe ‘7) (Davis ‘5, Exton ’38, Numan ‘79)
Super Drogs 1-2 Delta Q (Vasquez ’68) (Chase ’36, Pisang ’79)
Currahee Valiants 2-1 Badabing United (Jung Duk ’26 ’40) (Ralston ’81)

X11: Matern (The AntiChrists), Vaz (Bolt Thrower), Alcoforado (Bolt Thrower), Federer (The AntiChrists), Crinescu (Bolt Thrower), Iacobeanu (Bolt Thrower), Mereiles (Super Drogs), Davis (The AntiChrists), Lynott (Currahee Valiants), Otterdahl (Badabing United), Ralston (Badabing United)

Despite all their impressive talent, you sometimes wonder where Bolt Thrower would be without Alcoforado. He proved to be the hero today as his free kick wonder strike left Mauro Partell for dead and allowed Bolt Thrower to pick up a vital victory, well, they’re all important when it’s so tight.

Short lived joy for Gloomy Bear as after Garry McEnroe equalised in the 7th minute. (Yes, you read that right, Craig Davis scored for Chrille two minutes earlier) The AntiChrists proceeded to walk all over them and take the win with goals from Julien Exton and Raimond Numan. A very confident Drogs spoke to us in the last review about how he felt his team would be good enough to finish 3rd and that they were in no danger of relegation whatsoever, but when they lost 2-1 to Delta Q at their own home stadium, perhaps this wasn’t what the doctor ordered. Finally, Currahee picked up a 2-1 win over Badabing United to jump up into 3rd place, albeit by a single point and 5 points behind the leading duo of The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower, who were level on points. The AntiChrists greater goal threat however meant that they were top of the league, but it all seemed to be building up to a deciding match…

ROUND 9

Bolt Thrower 4-0 Currahee Valiants (Brum ’21, Spora ’32, Alcoforado ’44, Mujunen ‘69) (Henningson ’92)
Super Drogs 0-0 Real Bucuresti
Badabing United 0-1 The AntiChrists (Mino ’49, Exton ’54, Stolpe ‘74)
Delta Q 4-0 Gloomy Bear (Grytten ’30, Cáceres  ’51, Chase ’62, Pisang ’90)

X11: Matern (The AntiChrists), Alcoforado (Bolt Thrower), Zanchi (Bolt Thrower), Vaz (Bolt Thrower), Crinescu (Bolt Thrower), Spora (Bolt Thrower), Cáceres  (Delta Q), Zetti (Bolt Thrower), Brum (Bolt Thrower), Ralston (Badabing United), Abel (Super Drogs)

Bolt Thrower were going well this season until they ran into Currahee Valiants, since then they have lost the initiative. Could they extract revenge on the Valiants or would another trophy chance slip away from them? Well, the Valiants put out a reserve team against Bolt Thrower, despite their win earlier in the season, clearly not fancying their chances away based on past results. Bolt Thrower decimated the young Valiants, with Bruno Brum, Januario Spora, Alcino Alcoforado and Eeto Mujunen all scoring. Gosta Henningson got one back for the Valiants but it was too late by that point.

For the second time in five days, The AntiChrists took on Badabing United. It was turning into a goal difference battle at this point and once again The AntiChrists came out as 3-0 winners. It meant Bolt Thrower gained +1 goal difference on The AntiChrists, but with the two meeting later in the season it was likely that match would prove to be more telling and TheAntiChrists still had the lead on goal difference, albeit by 3 goals rather than four.

After losing twice to Real Bucuresti, Super Drogs were hoping to finally reverse that trend in the league game at home. Despite having a large majority of possession in the first half however, it was Deane Kenyon of Bucuresti who had the first chance. Real were on top of chances despite not having much of the ball and the game finished 0-0, with Super Drogs failing to beat Real Bucuresti this season. Finally, Delta Q thrashed Gloomy Bear 4-0 with Torgim Grytten, Nestor Caceres, Matthew Chase and Kulit Pisang all scoring. Gloomy Bear defender Jim Thor was also sent off to compound the bottom club’s misery.

ROUND 10

The AntiChrists 5-0 Currahee Valiants (Exton ’16 ’45, Norris ’79, Numan ’82, Ratib ’92)
Real Bucuresti 4-1 Gloomy Bear (Kenyon ’31, Wattanasak ’41 ‘76, Rasputin ’68) (Wardenaer ‘7)
Delta Q 2-1 Badabing United (Cáceres  ’25, Ardiles ’73) (Rosado ’48)
Bolt Thrower 1-0 Super Drogs (Iacobeanu ’44)

X11: Matern (The AntiChrists), Vaz (Bolt Thrower), Zanchi (Bolt Thrower), Alcoforado (Bolt Thrower), Crinescu (Bolt Thrower), Caceres (Delta Q), Mino (The AntiChrists), Davis (The AntiChrists), Zetti (Bolt Thrower), Cassiano (The AntiChrists), Ralston (Badabing United)

The AntiChrists put some distance in the goal difference stakes between themselves and Bolt Thrower with a 5-0 thrashing of Currahee Valiants, in contrast to Bolt Thrower who could only win 1-0 against Super Drogs. Delta Q took advantage of Drogs’ defeat to leap out of the relegation zone with a win over 7th placed Badabing United while Real Bucuresti won 4-1 over bottom of the table Gloomy Bear

ROUND 11

Gloomy Bear 1-2 Bolt Thrower (Estevao ’82) (Alcoforado ’35, ’41)
Badabing United 0-4 Real Bucuresti (Bernal ’17 ’51, Kenyon ’63, Antzas ’69)
The AntiChrists 5-0 Delta Q (Federer PEN ’50, Numan ’60, Cassiano ’80 ’87, Davis ’83)
Currahee Valiants 5-1 Super Drogs (Jenkins ‘6 ’34 ’65, Gama ’57, Baranov ’62, Jenkins ’65) (Megre ’45)

X11: Matern (The AntiChrists), Crinescu (Bolt Thrower), Ratib (The AntiChrists), Norris (The AntiChrists), Federer (The AntiChrists), Davis (The AntiChrists), Brum (Bolt Thrower), Zetti (Bolt Thrower), Stolpe (The AntiChrists), McEnroe (Gloomy Bear), Ashford (Super Drogs)

The AntiChrists have now scored 10 goals in the space of two league games as they let rip 5 past Delta Q. Ture Holmgren will want to forget this game in a hurry as he was powerless to stop Roger Federer, Raimond Numan, Paulo Cassiano and Craig Davis from scoring past him. The AntiChrists now had a rather intimidating +11 goal advantage over Bolt Thrower who by contrast needed Alcino Alcoforado to bag them a 2-1 win from free kicks against Gloomy Bear, the result confirms Gloomy Bear’s relegation to Division 1 after one season, in their second spell in the top flight, and the first lasted just as long. Badabing United’s stay in the Hattrick League top flight looks likely to be over after 1 season as they were thrashed 4-0 by Real Bucuresti, Iker Bernal scoring twice

After commencing their rebuild during the week, the new look Super Drogs got trashed 5-1 by Currahee Valiants. Marv Jenkins scored a hattrick while Hilario Gama and Yuri Baranov also got on the scoresheet. Only highly rated young striker Bento Megre was able to pull one back for the Drogs. The Valiants are now nearing safety, but with Super Drogs in rebuild mode, one would think that would make them the favourites for the drop.

ROUND 12

Real Bucuresti 1-1 The AntiChrists (Kenyon ’61) (Soares ‘9)
Bolt Thrower 0-0 Badabing United
Gloomy Bear 1-0 Super Drogs (Wardenaer ’30 ’46, Warnock ‘53)
Currahee Valiants 0-2 Delta Q (Pisang ’56, Grytten ’67)

X11: Matern (The AntiChrists), Vaz (Bolt Thrower), Bainbridge (The AntiChrists), Federer (The AntiChrists), Zanchi (Bolt Thrower), Pisang (Delta Q), Zetti (Bolt Thrower), Brum (Bolt Thrower), Spora (Bolt Thrower), Cassiano (The AntiChrists), Colby (Bolt Thrower)

The big game was approaching but before that, the two teams had to ensure they either had an edge on the other going into the big showdown next week or that they were both in contention. The AntiChrists were away to Real Bucuresti, who were title contenders at one point but have since fallen away, but with Bolt Thrower playing relegation threatened Badabing United it was clear who had the tougher opponent of the two. That said, The AntiChrists are in inspired form at the moment, scoring 10 goals in their last 2 league games. Recognising this, Real threw out some of their fringe players while chasing development before the Change Report came around in just over two week’s time. Tiago Soares gave The AntiChrists the lead inside just 9 minutes but Real were making it much more difficult for the league leaders to score. In the 61st minute, a crucial goal occurred as 21 year old striker Deane Kenyon equalised for Real Bucuresti to throw a spanner in the works for Chrilles’ men. Chrille shuffled his pack in order to try and get back in front but to no avail. Real Bucuresti had held The AntiChrists and if Bolt Thrower could beat Badabing United then they would have the advantage going into the big game.

That said though, Bolt Thrower were missing half of their defence for the Badabing United game, and it was the most crucial half, free kick taker Alcoforado and 20 skilled defender Marius Crinescu. As a result they switched to a 3-5-2 formation in order to try and curb the damage of such a big loss. Bolt Thrower really were struggling to score despite creating countless chances, even in the 84th minute it was 0-0. A lack of a killer instinct therefore saw Bolt Thrower held to a 0-0 draw and The AntiChrists spared. The thing is now, Bolt Thrower had to win against The AntiChrists to stand any realistic chance of the league title and METALAC’s concern over his side’s conversion rate will no doubt deepen. It was a game Bolt Thrower should have won, but Petter Viktig in the Badabing United goal was the hero for his team and will also be a hero for The AntiChrists. It didn’t change the fact though that Badabing United were relegated from the Hattrick League after just one season, adding up to the increasing number of one timer teams in recent seasons who’ve got to the top and then dropped out after just one season, the top flight has been pretty hard to break into recently since Bolt Thrower won the title with only Currahee Valiants and Real Bucuresti really succeeding

Delta Q have pulled themselves out of the relegation fight with an inspired second half and the in form team travelled to Currahee Valiants. They won 2-0 and kept a clean sheet… and that’s despite the fact that Peter Romano was sent off. Finally, the rebuilding Super Drogs were thrashed by an already relegated Gloomy Bear side that will no doubt be thankful at being able to win a game.

ROUND 13

Super Drogs 0-4 Badabing United (Polias ’22 ’45, Rosado ’55 ‘91)
Gloomy Bear 1-0 Currahee Valiants (Ferrero ’92)
The AntiChrists 0-0 Bolt Thrower
Delta Q 0-0 Real Bucuresti

So then, this was it, the game that would effectively decide the title. While the winner of this game wouldn’t win the title today, if would make them strong favourites to win it in the last round. At S.t Ameno it was The AntiChrists vs. Bolt Thrower. Bolt Thrower needed to win this game, but of the two it was The AntiChrists who’d been getting the better results as of late, even if they themselves weren’t at their best. Fortunately however, Bolt Thrower had Alcino Alcoforado back for this game, but would the 28 year old defender’s free kick provide a reliable outlet against the intimidating Claus-Dieter Matern? Both teams also went with youth strikers up front, a sign perhaps that both teams are ageing now and Josef Pawolowski and Benedito Vicente were called upon to act as makeweights for the average age of their teams. The game was tight and had very few chances, with Julien Exton and Greger Stolpe having a couple for the AntiChrists in the first half.

Both teams subbed on their main strikers in the second half, with The AntiChrists also sacrificing Raimond Numan to keep their average age down. Bolt Thrower’s sub striker, Terence Colby, then had the chance to win the game for Bolt Thrower, but he spurned his shot and in that moment, it seemed likely that Bolt Thrower’s title chances had gone with it. This was shown by the fact that Julien Exton got two free kicks late on in the game. While Bolt Thrower were still in with a mathematical chance of winning the title, the fact that The AntiChrists played the rebuilding Super Drogs in the final game of the season while Bolt Thrower were at home to Delta Q meant it was almost mission impossible for METALAC’s men, so even beating Delta Q could see them lose on goal difference. That was how costly this draw was, but even more so the draw against Badabing United in Round 12.

In the other games in the round, Super Drogs’ relegation from the Hattrick League top flight was confirmed with a defeat to already relegated Badabing United, with Stavros Polias being the star man. Drogs defender Riikya Marchella was also injured forcing Mija Nas Escadas on in his place. Diogo Rosado scored a further two goals as Badabing United embark on a late surge in form.

With the relegation places now confirmed, the teams in midtable could breathe a sigh of relief. As could Gloomy Bear who managed to win again, albeit against a development focused Currahee Valiants who were already safe. It was only their second win this season.

ROUND 14

Bolt Thrower 6-0 Delta Q (Alcoforado ‘6 ’81 PEN ‘85, Spora ’29, Colby ’83, Brum ’91)
Badabing United 2-2 Gloomy Bear (Falque ’39, Rosado PEN ‘60) (Wardenaer ’53, Paul ‘58)
The AntiChrists 5-0 Super Drogs (Mino ‘1 ‘54, Exton ’10, Cassiano ’18 ’69)
Currahee Valiants 1-0 Real Bucuresti (Jenkins ’45)

X11: Matern (The AntiChrists), Crinescu (Bolt Thrower), Alcoforado (Bolt Thrower), Vaz (The AntiChrists), Norris (The AntiChrists), Davis (The AntiChrists), Brum (Bolt Thrower), Exton (The AntiChrists), Mino (The AntiChrists), Jung Duk (Currahee Valiants), Colby (Bolt Thrower)

So, this was it then, the round which would decide the title, but with The AntiChrists playing the rebuilding Super Drogs, there was inevitability about the whole thing. And sure enough, Ivan Mino got the party started in the first minute, with goals from Julien Exton and Paulo Cassiano following with The AntiChrists enjoying a ridiculous 76% possession. Ivan Mino added a second goal to his tally in this game and Cassiano also got a 2nd goal. It was a party which crowned The AntiChrists Hattrick League champions for the fifth time in six seasons.

Bolt Thrower really needed to win 15-0 to stand any chance of winning the title, which seemed incredibly unlikely although Delta Q did use this game as a youth exercise... Alcino Alcoforado scored a hattrick of set pieces as he scored twice from the free kick spot and once from the penalty spot, while goals for Spora, Colby and Brum saw Bolt Thrower run out 6-0 winners and finish joint top on points with The AntiChrists. Ultimately however, the back to back 5-0 wins for The AntiChrists saw them take the title and Bolt Thrower agonisingly missed out due to the +10 goal difference between the two teams.

Elsewhere, Currahee Valiants leapfrogged Delta Q with a 1-0 win thanks to Marv Jenkins to finish 4th in the league while in the battle of the basement clubs finished all square in an entertaining 2-2 draw, where Diogo Rosado managed to rescue a point for Badabing United. However, Fermin Falque’s winner was disallowed, so it could have been even better for the home side. Falque had given Badabing the lead in the first half, but two quick goals from Gloomy Bear levelled things as Bard Wardenaer and Howard Paul both netted in 5 minutes.

And that brings to a close the 40th season of the Hattrick League. These were your standings:

So, The AntiChrists win the Hattrick League title yet again, their firth league title, drawing them level with Kurdiska CF for number of Hattrick League titles won and they are just 2 titles off equalling Hellmoppers' record of 7. Meanwhile, Bolt Thrower are once again runners up. In fact, all the top five teams from last season make up the top 5 this season, only when a team has been rebuilding has anyone managed to stay up, proving the strength of the current Hattrick League. So, after only one season, Super Drogs, Badabing United and Gloomy Bear are all relegated from the top flight. In their place, Stavie FC, who were as low as 5th placed in Division 1a in Round 8 and had never led the division, snatched a dramatic automatic promotion and condemning long time leaders The Corleone Family to a play-off spot. In Division 1b, FC Oranges went from 3rd to 1st in the last two rounds to win promotion to the top while, having never been in the top 3 all season, Cleptomaniacos CF stole the play-off spot from both Battleborn and Capelaw Crusaders and then took advantage of The Corleone Family’s decision to substitute their slightly injured goalkeeper to win promotion to the Hattrick League top flight after previously being a prominent cup team. The club has been renamed Zalmoxis Wolfs for the new season. The promotion of FC Oranges means we will have two Croatian managers in the top flight of the Hattrick League next season, possibly a first.

Cup:

Round 5:

No doubt what the biggest tie of this round was, as Real Bucuresti took on Super Drogs. It proved to be a thrilling affair and similar to the league game. This time around, Patrick Nadip Akem gave the Drogs the lead. However, Iker Bernal equalised just after half time, but Super Drogs’ top class striker Cavani Abel but his team back in front? Could Drogs hold on and secure a 6th round place? It was not to be, Iker Bernal’s second goal of the game ensured the striker would be keeping his team in the game, but it was Vasili Yarmolenko who secured all three points. Real Bucuresti were through at the expense of last season’s quarter finalists Super Drogs.

Another of last season’s quarter finalists, FC U Craiova were eliminated by top flight opposition in Badabing United. Badabing were one of 5 top flight teams to make it through to the next round with Delta Q joining them, Real Bucuresti, Bolt Thrower and The AntiChrists. Division 3 side Just Another Team could not be ruled out either as they have one of the richest teams in the game and a squad which could potentially win the whole thing.

Round 6:

Another all top flight tie as The AntiChrists took on Badabing United. This was rather more one sided though as Julien Exton scored twice along with a Claus-Dieter Matern penalty to secure a win for Chrilles’ team. Not long after that, he also secured Manager of the Week again. This round wasn’t really one for upsets though; a few close encounters but the seeds belied positions in the league. A team to look out for though, apart from the aforementioned Just Another Team, was the 203 million econ rated Fight 4 Fame team, managed by a former XCL semi finalist and former number 1 in Briscarie.

Round 7:

We were getting down to the business end of the cup now with just 32 teams left in the competition. And last seasons’ semi finalists FK Ariljac went out to Division  4 side Edinburgh Hearts in controversial fashion, they dominated chances 7-2 but ended up losing by one solitary goal. Delta Q advanced to the next round against a But Masters team who played youth after not really seeing a chance of themselves getting into the last 16 against Delta. Union Adrave were eliminated by Bolt Thrower while The AntiChrists silently went about their business and progressed to the last 16 yet again. Lool, after providing us with some great entertainment earlier in the competition, were unfortunately eliminated by fellow Division 1a team Stavie FC. Other teams progressing included Los Nisu who were in the top flight last season, FC LULE, Coollife, Just Another Team, Ramalde FC, Real Bucuresti, Fight 4 Fame 2012, Artemyx Show, FC Fram, Navestad IF and FK Dinamo Bucuresti. One of the winners in this round would win the cup but who would it be? Scratch that, let me rephrase that, will it be The AntiChrists or someone other than the AntiChrists?

Last 16:

Navestad IF 1-3 The AntiChrists (Garganta ’25) (Cassiano ’22 ‘78, Exton ’35)
Bolt Thrower 2-0 FC Fram (Alcoforado ’42, Spora ’91)
FC LULE 2-3 Ramalde FC (Rotchen ’43, Oae ’64) (Bret ’38, Charriere ’69, Hone ’73)
Artemyx Show 1-2 Los Nisu (Schiersand ’51) (Oleguer ’70, Del Moral ’72)
Stavie FC 3-0 Real Bucuresti (Everett ’17 ’34, Hammerhand ’80)
Coolife 0-1 Just Another Team (Preotescu ’59)
Fight 4 Fame 2012 3-2 Edinburgh Hearts  (Beake ’84 ’87, Ramos Garcia ’91) (Conden ’19, Pizarro ’76)
FK Dinamo Bucuresti 1-1 Delta Q (dos Reis ’87) (Grytten ‘9) (Dinamo win 4-3 on penalties)

The last 16 is where things become really serious and 10th seeds Stavie proceeded to stamp all over top flight side Real Bucuresti to progress to the quarter finals. Competition favourites The AntiChrists won 3-1 against Navestad IF while last season’s runners up Bolt Thrower beat FC Fram 2-0. FC LULE’s cup run came to an end against Ramalde FC while former top flight side Los Nisu knocked Artemyx Show out of the cup. Briscarie knows what it takes to win trophies in the official leagues and his current side Fight 4 Fame 2012 progressed to the quarter finals with a 3-2 comeback win over Edinburgh Hearts, with Sergio Ramos Garcia scoring a dramatic late winner in the 91st minute, while another potential dangerous opponent, Just Another Team, proceeded past Coolife by just a single goal. Meanwhile, Delta Q lost on penalties to FK Dinamo Bucuresti so it was the two top flight juggernauts that were the only top flight teams left.

Quarter Finals:

The AntiChrists 1-0 Fight 4 Fame 2012 (Stolpe ‘18)
FK Dinamo Bucuresti 0-2 Bolt Thrower (Brum ’51, Zanchi ’53)
Just Another Team 1-0 Los Nisu (Zammit ’26)
Stavie FC 2-2 Ramalde FC (Hammerhand ’12, Everett ’63) (Beresford ‘7, Bastien ’17) (Ramalde win 6-5 on penalties)

This round threw up a fascinating draw between Chrille and Briscarie, but like everyone else in the Hattrick League, Briscarie had to cope with a team of a much greater skill level. It was a rather one sided match although Fight 4 Fame lived up to their name and at least tried to put a fight, the only goal came via a set piece free kick thanks to Greger Stolpe. Briscarie’s tactics were rated slightly better but he concluded that Chrille was unstoppable.

Bolt Thrower also progressed to the semi finals thanks to a 2-0 win over FK Dinamo Bucuresti with goals from Bruno Brum and Ludano Zanchi, but the important thing here was that Alcino Alcoforado, who has been so key to Bolt Thrower scoring goals, was injured ahead of their XCL return leg game against FC Laranjas Podres. Bad timing without a doubt, could Bolt Thrower survive without him?

Just Another Team edged a tight game against Los Nisu, with the single goal coming from the wonderfully named Jonathan Zammit. The final game saw Division 1a Stavie FC knocked out by Division 3’s Ramalde FC, no doubt that Ramalde would want to be the draw that the other semi finalists would want.

Semi Finals:

The AntiChrists 1-0 Just Another Team (Stolpe ‘55)
Ramalde FC 0-1 Bolt Thrower (Colby ’47)

Bolt Thrower will be relieved to avoid The AntiChrists until the final, although I’m sure Just Another Team would have rather not faced The AntiChrists at the semi final stage. Nevertheless, could the money bags of Just Another Team who could probably slap a 1 million bonus on this game and still have enough money to train the entire team to average 17 form take on the might of one of the most dominant teams the Hattrick League has ever seen?

Unfortunately this was a prime example that money doesn’t buy you success, and Akakaboto’s team needs a lot of work if they are to become contenders in the future. More players of the calibre of Andre Piersson are required, but to be fair, they did give The AntiChrists a good game. Despite the AntiChrists dominating possession, Just Another Team edged the chance count 3-2. But the telling contribution was Greger Stolpe’s 55th minute winner which sent The AntiChrists into the final again and on course for a 4th consecutive league and cup double, a feat only previously achieved by Jesus and his Pandas in the Ultimate League. However, I doubt this is the last we will see of Just Another Team as contenders in the Hattrick League Cup, this was their breakout season and with the squads of The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower ageing, they could be in a very strong position in a few season’s time.

The other semi final was between Ramalde and Bolt Thrower. Bolt Thrower were strong favourites but had the misfortune of losing half their defence to injury the previous week. Fortunately, Marius Crinescu was back for this game, but Alcino Alcoforado was still injured, and he arguably had played an even bigger role in Bolt Thrower’s success. The fans had to wait until after half time before Terence Colby gave his side the lead. After going 2-0 up thanks to Vitor Zetti, Marius Crinescu was surprisingly substituted, perhaps with the XCL quarter final against 2-Tone Army the following day in mind. It didn’t make any difference though, Bolt Thrower were into their second consecutive Hattrick League cup final and it would once again be the 1st and 2nd seeds participating in the final. With both of them also the only remaining Hattrick League title contenders, we already knew that both of them would be in the XCL final.

Final:

So, the 40th Hattrick League cup final would be between the two big guns of the modern era, The AntiChrists vs. Bolt Thrower. It was the cup final that was fitting for being the 40th although it was also a repeat of last season’s final. While The AntiChrists have a far superior record to Bolt Thrower in fixtures between the two, Bolt Thrower had not lost against them this season.

Both teams had come off the back of a draw in the league against each other, but this time round, there had to be a winner. But which team would win? The AntiChrists started their quest to the final against Horsens FC, who probably wished they hadn’t turned up as they lost 10-0 on aggregate over both legs. Former top flight side Rinkeby FC followed and fared even worse, losing 11-0 on aggregate. They needed penalties to overcome Infinity FC, but then dispatched Islandia to move onto Round 6, where they faced a fellow top flight side in Badabing United. They won that game and then proceeded to knock out Gloomy Vikings. Navestad IF proved to be a bit more stubborn although The AntiChrists still won, before seeing through some tough opponents in Fight 4 Fame 2012 and Just Another Team on their way to the final.

Bolt Thrower meanwhile started their cup run in the second round against Casablanca FC, who were demolished 6-0 on aggregate. FC DLClash followed in the third round and they went down just as easily, losing 7-0 on aggregate. Liatorps, Blue Label and Star Rats all followed before the first big test against Union Adrave. They passed that, and went on to win 2-0 against FC Fram in the last 16. FK Dinamo Bucuresti followed in the quarter finals before Ramalde FC lost in the semis.

The teams were lead out by Claus-Dieter Matern for The AntiChrists and Marius Crinescu for Bolt Thrower into a packed Xpert Arena. The team news was as follows:

The referee for the cup final was Seymour Red and he got the cup final underway. In the first minute of the game, Bolt Thrower won a free kick. Alcino Alcoforado took it straight on goal but it was saved by Claus-Dieter Matern. Six minutes later, Bolt Thrower took the lead through Vitor Zetti, who tapped in Marius Crinescu’s breakaway. 1-0 Bolt Thrower, but their opponents weren’t just any old team. Craig Davis’ frustration was evident in his booking in the 12th minute, but after that The AntiChrists began to gobble up possession. Josef Pawlowski had an attempt on goal  but the young striker was no match for Cormac Clifden in the Bolt Thrower goal. Bolt Thrower countered with a free kick from Alcoforado which was once again saved by Claus-Dieter Matern before a controversial incident, as Roger Federer clattered into Ludano Zanchi, earning himself a yellow card but also injuring Zanchi in the process.  18 year old Jasper Scheepens was forced on in his place, how would that affect the game? Half time, The AntiChrists 0-1 Bolt Thrower

The second half got underway and Liam Otway came on in place of Raimond Numan, it was clear what The AntiChrists were going to do now, especially with Bolt Thrower’s defence having been weakened. And sure enough, Paulo Cassiano came on for Josef Pawlowski at half time. Bolt Thrower also changed strikers, just like on Saturday by bringing off Vicente for main striker Terence Colby. Cassiano looked lively after coming on, having an early shot at goal, two minutes later, Bolt Thrower midfielder Eeto Mujunen went into the referee’s book. Cassiano had already fired a warning shot but Bolt Thrower didn’t heed to it and in the 63rd minute he took advantage to equalise from Ronald Norris’ breakaway. So, it was all squad again and worryingly for Bolt Thrower, things seemed to be in The AntiChrists’ favour now with the weakened defence. They had another chance when Julien Exton took his free kick straight on target but Cormac Clifden comfortably saved it. Cassiano had another chance but missed the goal. Bolt Thrower’s Terence Colby had been much quieter by contrast, but when Bolt Thrower had dealt with the waves of AntiChrists attacks, they countered with Colby who proceeded to put Bolt Thrower back in front in the 84th minute. They had just 6 minutes to hang on now after Vitor Zetti set up Colby in a delightful manner. The AntiChrists had enjoyed much more of the ball than Bolt Thrower, but crucially Bolt Thrower kept up their unbeaten record against The AntiChrists to win the Hattrick League cup for only the second time in their history. The AntiChrists had fallen in a big game and failed to match Jesus and his Pandas’ site record of four consecutive doubles.

We caught up with METALAC after the game to ask him about his cup triumph.

XD: Congratulations on winning the cup. How does it feel to have secured another major trophy?

METALAC: Thanks mate. The feeling is good. The trophy came as kind of a reward for time and energy in the last three months.

XD: Considering the amount of times over the last few seasons that Bolt Thrower have lost to The AntiChrists is there any satisfaction from the fact that throughout the season your team went undefeated against them?

METALAC: Satisfaction is definitely there. The important thing is that we won in the cup final, unlike last season. Last season we conceded only one goal and that was the one in the final when we lost 1-0.
This season again in the finals we have not received a single goal. It would be nice if we were able to reach the cup final and win the Cup without conceding a goal, but I'm not complaining :)

XD: Given that fact, how gutting is it to lose the league on goal difference?

METALAC: For a long time I was ready for such a turn of events, so I'm not surprised. But we lost the championship in the 12th round when we played out a 0-0 draw in strange circumstances at home. The problem for my team for a number of seasons is very weak percentage of realization of opportunities. Therefore, we will always have a worse goal difference than our major competitors.

XD: With a cup win, an XCL semi final and a league challenge that only faltered on goal difference, is this Bolt Thrower’s best season yet?

METALAC: Short and simple, this season will be the best in the team’s history only if we go to the finals of the XCL

XD: How much longer do you think this team has left before they are too old?

METALAC: I think the next season is the last for some great success. By that I mean great success in XCL or possibly conquer the Hattrick league. Most players are already quite old and I have no money to buy good players to put down the average age. So, this team has one more season on the big stage.

XD: What are your plans for after Bolt Thrower’s competitive period? Are you going to stick around to rebuild them or will you be looking for another team?

METALAC: The team I took over almost three years ago. Before that I was on the bench of another team for a full five years. So in the eight years I was manager of two clubs.
It is perhaps time to slightly more frequently change teams like some other managers.
But it is not time for a final decision.

XD: Thank you for your time and good luck for the future.

METALAC: Thank you, and thanks to all who took the time to read this interview.

Summerhill F.C 0-1 The AntiChrists (Matern PEN ’31)
Bolt Thrower 1-0 Interpool FC (Alcoforado ’22)

1 goal apiece for both sides as The AntiChrists despatched Summerhill thanks to a penalty from Claus-Dieter Matern to remain unbeaten in the group while Bolt Thrower beat Interpool thanks to a free kick from Alcino Alcoforado. XCL regulars Interpool FC look like they may kick the bucket any time soon with average age starting to catch up on them, and the group was starting to look like a two horse race with Bolt Thrower leading on account of Assault’s draw with Interpool. The two faced each other in the next round.

The AntiChrists 1-0 Club 662 (Exton ’58)
Assault on Dark Athena 2-2 Bolt Thrower (Tant ’24, Teles ’87) (Alcoforado ’33, Zetti ’80)

A Julien Exton free kick was enough to seal all three points for The AntiChrists, but from a Hattrick League point of view, the game of the day was Bolt Thrower vs. Assault on Dark Athena. It started badly for Bolt Thrower, Jimi Tant gave Assault the lead in the 24th minute, but Alcino Alcoforado rescued the game in the 33rd minute. Vitor Zetti then put Bolt Thrower in the lead but Lucio Teles rescued a point for Assault. Athena needed to win this game to go top of the group, but both teams were now through to the knockouts, and both will consider themselves among the favourites to win the competition.

Nesa’s Lions 1-2 The AntiChrists (Bono ’79) (Davis ’55, Pawlowski ’76)
Bolt Thrower 3-0 Yellow Devils FC (Alcoforado ’11 ’57, Iacobeanu ’94)

The AntiChrists capped a fine unbeaten group stage performance with a 2-1 win over Nesa’s Lions. It was pretty comfortable really, Craig Davis and Josef Pawlowski scored twice in the second half which rendered Nesa’s Lions’ Hento Bono’s effort irrelevant. But Nesa’s Lions had done enough to quality for the knockout stages where they would meet… The AntiChrists While Bolt Thrower rounded off their group stage with a  3-0 win over whipping boys Yellow Devils FC who will be relieved that the XCL is now over.

Nesa’s Lions 0-1 The AntiChrists (Davis ’68)
FC Laranjas Podres 1-1 Bolt Thrower (Buckle ’12, Nostvold ‘54) (Mujunen ’27, Alcoforado ‘56)

So the two Group C qualifiers had to face off against each other in the last 16, not the draw that Nesa’s Lions would have wanted. However, it took until the 68th minute for The AntiChrists to take the lead, with Craig Davis scoring the only goal of the game. The AntiChrists also lost Stephen Bainbridge to injury.

Bolt Thrower had the mightily difficult task against FC Laranjas Podres, who lest we forget knocked out The AntiChrists on their way to the final last season. They also had to do it without Terence Colby. Leonard Buckle gave his side the lead in the 12th minute of the game but Eeto Mujunen equalised. Nicolay Nostvold, part of a 3 pronged attack, made it 2-1 but a free kick from Alcino Alcoforado made it 2-2 just two minutes later. The match finished 2-2, and Bolt Thrower had the luxury of a 2 goal cushion going into next week but METALAC was not too pleased as his side dominated the game with 11 chances to Mat’s 3 and failed to win the game. If anyone knows a thing or two about getting past the knockout stages in tight situations though, then it’s Matsugohei.

The AntiChrists 1-0 Nesa’s Lions (Mino ’79)
Bolt Thrower 1-0 FC Laranjas Podres (Zetti ’41)

The AntiChrists held a 1-0 lead going into this second leg and since it was an away goal, they knew if they scored just once they would be in a strong position to go through. That goal didn’t come early on though as Ivan Mino’s first leg goal was disallowed. The AntiChrists nearly had a scare when Rupert Roddick put the ball in the back of the net but thankfully for them, the goal was disallowed. Roddick was then sent off to leave Nesa’s Lions down to 10 men and The AntiChrists finally sealed qualification with a goal from Ivan Mino. The AntiChrists march on and they will play Gunnsjons IK in the quarter finals.

As if the fact that Bolt Thrower didn’t win the first leg wasn’t enough for METALAC, he also had to play this game without main free kick taker Alcino Alcoforado. Jasper Scheepens was drafted in as his replacement. Vitor Zetti thought he’d given his side the early lead but it was disallowed. As if that wasn’t enough, Marius Crinescu was injured and young Greek defender Stelios Xanthopolous (which is a ridiculous name may I add) replaced him. All of a sudden METALAC only had half of a defence. Vitor Zetti attempted to put that right by giving his side the lead just before half time. Despite their defence being crippled however, Bolt Thrower proved too much for last season’s finalists and Laranjas Podres were dumped out of the competition. Bolt Thrower will play 2-Tone Army in the next round.

Gunnsjons IK 0-1 The AntiChrists (Mino ’29)
2 Tone Army 1-1 Bolt Thrower (Meifi ’20) (Zetti ’91)

This XCL edition hosted arguably one of the strongest selection of quarter finalists ever seen, and The AntiChrists’ opponents were no slouches. Gunnsjons IK had some amazing players, their once 20 skill midfielder Danijel Ciric may be declining in quality but with the outstanding Carl-Goran Bernehall (26/17) and a solid 17 bar defence all round, they were a good matchup with The AntiChrists. However they were generally on top, and Ivan Mino scored the crucial goal in the 29th minute from Raimond Numan’s breakaway. Gunnsjons were restricted to just one chance all game, all in all, an excellent result for The AntiChrists who now have an away goal to take back to St. Ameneo.

Bolt Thrower however, ran into trouble. 2-Tone Army played this game on the same day as the Golden League change report, and as such their form was hardly up to XCL standard. Despite this however they stood up to Bolt Thrower and took the lead through Alex Meifi in the 20th minute. Bolt Thrower had a goal from Marius Crinescu and things were looking bleak for them… until out of nowhere, Vitor Zetti popped up to turn in Gabriel Iacobeanu’s breakaway, a dramatic away goal for Bolt Thrower all of a sudden gives them the advantage going into the second leg. So how will this one play out?

The AntiChrists 1-0 Gunnsjons IK (Cassiano '93)
Bolt Thrower 1-0 2-Tone Army (Crinescu ’38)

So, was this game over for Gunnsjons or would they find a way back into this game? Well, thanks to the injury and suspension crisis; including Carl-Goran Bernehall and Gunnsjons, they didn’t actually have any players on the bench. The AntiChrists came into this game off the back of losing the Hattrick League cup final They were on top in general, but lost Roger Federer to injury. Donnie Kinnell replaced him leaving The AntiChrists with only half a world class defence with Bainbridge and Norris the only two left. Ultimately though that didn’t matter because Gunnsjons offered no threat whatsoever and Boetistuta Delgreve was sent off.  Substitute Paulo Cassiano then scored a 93rd minute winner to send The AntiChrists into the semi finals.

And they would be facing the winner of Bolt Thrower vs. 2-Tone Army. Fresh from their win in the Hattrick League cup, Bolt Thrower secured a 1-0 victory to send 2-Tone Army out of the competition, with Marius Crinescu scoring the only goal of the game. It meant that we would definitely have a Hattrick League team in the final, but which one? The AntiChrists would face off against Bolt Thrower to decide which one of them would meet SparkaSpring or Imperium Sine Fine in the final.

Bolt Thrower 0-0 The AntiChrists

So, for the third time in this review, there would be an AntiChrists vs. Bolt Thrower game. METALAC has had the edge this season, but with a place in the final at stake and the chance to match ShadowsDT for the record number of XCL wins, The AntiChrists had something to play for. The change report had hindered these two by dropping their average form and form was still low for this game, but it was slightly better for The AntiChrists. Bolt Thrower could make up for that however by officially having the best player in the world, 21 bar defender Marius Crinescu. But how would this match play out? Well, it was a very cagey affair and the only chance of the first half went to Bolt Thrower’s Vitor Zetti. In the second half however Benedito Vicente had an early shot on goal but Claus-Dieter Matern had no problems dealing with it. He was hauled off for Terence Colby after that chance. The initiative swung in favour of The AntiChrists after that with two chances in the space of four minutes. Neither found the back of the net though, nor did the late chance from Raimond Numan. It’s still all to play for in the second leg then, The AntiChrists didn’t get any away goals which gives Bolt Thrower a good chance in the return leg, but one suspects that The AntiChrists would be happy to have home advantage in a situation where they simply have to win to quality.

The AntiChrists 0-0 Bolt Thrower (The AntiChrists win 3-0 on penalties)

So then, a straight head to head between the two Hattrick League giants to decide who would be in the final and Bolt Thrower made the brave decision, considering that they had previously done well with the now sold Benedito Vicente up front, to field Terence Colby up front rather than to give a debut to new striker Aaron McAnuff. Maybe they should have, as The AntiChrists dominated the game, or maybe it wouldn’t have made any difference, who knows? They did find it hard to break down the Bolt Thrower defence however, and it was only in the second half when they really got the ball rolling. And in the 57th minute, Sakib Ratib struck a crucial goal for The AntiChrists… only for it to be ruled out. Ultimately Bolt Thrower’s defence tightened up after that and the game went to extra time.

In extra time, Ivan Mino’s header was parried by Cormac Clifden and before the break; Raimond Numan suffered the same fate. Bolt Thrower would probably take penalties right now and indeed the XCL semi final would be decided on penalties. Arguably this favoured The AntiChrists, who had the stronger of the two goalkeepers and plenty of cool players (Bolt Thrower had none), but both teams had plenty of quality to trouble each other in a penalty shootout situation.

It’s fair to say that both sets of players weren’t the best of friends, so there was plenty of mind games going on during the shootout. Matern himself was up first and tucked it into the net past his opposite number Clifden. Alcino Alcoforado was up next for Bolt Thrower but his penalty landed straight in Matern’s arms. Ivan Mino was up next and he didn’t let the pressure get to him. Marius Crinescu was up next for Bolt Thrower, and with such a skilled player taking the penalty, you would think this would go in right? Nope, he skied it and the momentum was with The AntiChrists. Julien Exton was up next and he fired past Clifden and it was now 3-0. Bolt Thrower were facing total annihilation in this penalty shootout and it was up to Maximiliano Vaz to ensure that METALAC’s side walked away with some dignity as if he missed, Bolt Thrower were out. The pressure got to him though and he skied his shot, meaning The AntiChrists were in the final. Beating Bolt Thrower on penalties isn’t the right word, the penalty shootout was the most one sided I’ve ever seen, but you can’t say that on the balance of play that the wrong team went through. So, for the first time ever in X11 history we would have a repeat of an older XCL final and arguably The AntiChrists’ goalkeeper Claus-Dieter Matern single handily won his side the game.

Transfers:

The biggest transfers out of the league were quite easily Super Drogs’ sale of four players, defender Vasco Cortez who joined Pro League big spenders Rioderogo for 15 million econ and midfield trio Jurgen Brown, Craig Crampsey and Humberto Vazquez. The combined fees for all the players were over 35 million econ. They were replaced by many high quality youths. This appears to be a decision that was taken in light of the club’s lack of competitiveness in the top flight. They spent 13 million econ on hotshot young striker Bento Megre, surely he will be one of the strongest strikers around in the future.

Manager changes:

Last time we reported about the big change at Cleptomaniacos CF and Matusalemic’s Philo Sophia side being renamed FC Bazga under new manager Osmandreiosm. Well, he didn’t even last a month in the job before being sacked and replaced with Daw_LePlusBalais. Not a particularly good sign…

In a shock twist however, just one day after the season ended, Super Drogs lost their manager Drogs to Young Liverpool FC in the Power League. This was a big surprise as Drogs had commenced a full rebuild of the team during the season with some extremely valuable players, so the decision to change teams was extremely surprising.

The new Hattrick League season kicks off this Saturday. With The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower ageing, can someone challenge them or will the skill difference still prove to be too much?
