Steppenwolf Suckers
Division 1b, Ultimate League
Manager: Neno4
Born to Be Wild
So, when we last left you, Steppenwolf Suckers were leading the Ultimate League… but it was very close with only 6 points between the top 7. It was ridiculously close, but if Stiinta Bacau beat Steppenwolf Suckers and JK Besiktas beat Lusitanian Warriors, then there would only be three points between the top 7. But surely that wouldn’t happen right?

ROUND 8

Diabos de Alvalade 7-0 Red Bull FC (Rodgerson ‘4 ’60, Bixby ’11 ’44 ‘76, Acombley ’21, Setembro ’90)
Steppenwolf Suckers 0-1 Stiinta Bacau (Edgren ’43)
JK Besiktas 1-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Roddick ’58)
Spirit of Shankly FC 0-0 Diabos de Alvalade

Amazingly that is exactly what happened. Suckers lost 1-0 at home to Stiinta Bacau while JK Besiktas lost to Lusitanian Warriors, both by a single goal and there it was. Before your very eyes, the Ultimate League table had just three points between the top seven, with only Red Bull cut adrift of the rest of the pack. Rupert Roddick got the goal for Besiktas while Kurt-Erik Edgren added the spice with the winner for Stiinta. SoS and Diabos played out a goalless draw while Diabos stuffed 7 past Red Bull. The top flight dream for Slbx7 is turning into a nightmare and it turned out to be his last game in charge of the club.

ROUND 9

Lusitanian Warriors 2-2 Stiinta Bacau (Berberich ’45, Goitom ’53) (Padurariu ’73 ’84)
FK Vucje 1-4 Steppenwolf Suckers (Ognjenovic ’57) (Eriksen ’15 ‘66, Atkonius ’52, Nylin ’81)
Spirit of Shankly FC 0-0 Diabos de Alvalade
Red Bull RC 0-2 JK Besiktas (Caballero ’27, Norling ’48)

Unfortunately for the neutral, the top flight did not maintain the 3 point gap between all the teams after this round, but it was still very close, 5 points rather than 3 separating the top 7. League leaders Steppenwolf Suckers are bidding for a second league title and a third for their manager and took the lead in the 15th minute through Christian Eriksen. Laban Atkonius doubled the lead for the Suckers before Dragan Ognjenovic pulled one back for Vucje. Another goal for Eriksen and one for Kjell-Ake Nylin put the game beyond doubt and the Suckers were now 2 points clear at the top.

Elsewhere, Tiago was left fuming after his team dropped a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Stiinta Bacau, Dorin Paduariu scored twice to equalise for Stiinta after Berberich and Goitom had put the Warriors 2-0 up. SoS and Diabos played out a 0-0 draw while one of the pre-season title favourites, JK Besiktas, moved up to 2nd place after beating managerless bottom club Red Bull RC 2-0, with goals from Feliciano Caballero and Jari Norling.

ROUND 10

Stiinta Bacau 3-1 JK Besiktas (Astle ’30, Robles ’39, Padurariu ’66) (Tabuas ‘9)
Diabos de Alvalade 1-1 Steppenwolf Suckers (Acombley ’58) (Sireacu PEN ’22)
FK Vucje 2-2 Lusitanian Warriors (Ognjenovic ’38 ’79) (Castelli ’28, Hansen ’51)
Red Bull RC 1-2 Spirit Of Shankly FC (Ambler ’91) (Bergendorff  ’62, Buinac PEN ’89)

The gap between the top 7 remained at 5 points as Steppenwolf Suckers were held to a 1-1 draw away to Diabos de Alvalade. Fears of the Suckers losing their top spot were eased by 2n d placed JK Besiktas losing to Stiinta Bacau, a result that put SocC’s team into 3rd place. Reigning champions Spirit Of Shankly gave new Red Bull manager Whatboy a losing start to his time in charge and put Andyjones’ men into 2nd place Finally, Lusitanian Warriors had yet another draw, this time a 2-2 draw against FK Vucje with Dragutin Ognjenovic scoring both goals for the home side. The crazy season continues.

ROUND 11

Steppenwolf Suckers 3-0 Red Bull RC (Eriksen ’21, Atkonius ’32 ’37)
Lusitanian Warriors 3-0 Diabos de Alvalade (Hansen ’42 ’85 ’91)
Stiinta Bacau 2-1 FK Vucje (Hanus ’22, Dedovic OG ’88) (Balmazovic ’83)
JK Besiktas 3-1 Spirit of Shankly FC (Terreros ’54, Caballero ’63 ’71) (Bergendoff ’51)

The gap between the top 7 increased; as Red Bull were confirmed to have been relegated from the Ultimate League top flight after just one season. After a crazy close season, some teams were beginning to get separated from the pack and Diabos de Alvalade’s cup run was taking its toll on the team’s league form, they lost 3-0 to Lusitanian Warriors with Cliff Bjarne Hansen scoring all three goals.

One team determined to try and win the title though were Stiinta Bacau. After the failure to win the title with his old club Boryana Brigands, SocC had an unexpected opportunity to try and chase down the Suckers and a 2-1 win over FK Vucje moved Stiinta into 2nd place, also in part due to Besiktas’ win over SoS. That said though, Stiinta needed Dedovic to turn into his own net late on in order to secure them the points. Make no mistake about it, they are facing a real challenge.

ROUND 12

Diabos de Alvalade 2-1 Stiinta Bacau (Mario ’35, Oliveira ’59) (Robles PEN ’51)
Red Bull RC 1-3 Lusitanian Warriors (Warren ’17) (Tristao ’11, Lucas ’84, Castelli ’89)
Steppenwolf Suckers 3-0 Spirit of Shankly FC (Eriksen ‘8 ’66, Hollyfield ’79)
JK Besiktas 1-1 FK Vucje (Terreros ’84) (Freitas ’47)

Stiinta’s challenge petered out after they lost away to Diabos de Alvalade. Diabos had fallen down the table in recent weeks, but that was mainly due to the fact that they had been playing their youngsters in the league and resting the first team for cup matches. They were now out of the cup now and proceeded to deal a blow to Stiinta’s title chances with a 2-1 victory, Mario and Oliveira’s goals enough to overcome Robles’ penalty. The Suckers proceeded to thrash last season’s champions Spirit of Shankly FC as they sought a second Ultimate League title to put the club up with the likes of Cormorans, Damocles, La Armonia, Steaua La Manole, Rasaritul Delta, F.C Sloga and Jesus and his Pandas as teams that have won more than one title, while for Neno it would put him level on titles won with cpt_neaza, only Jesus has won more. For SoS however, they found themselves in the relegation zone.

There were still a few obstacles to overcome though, as Stiinta’s defeat allowed Lusitanian Warriors to move into 2nd place. They had to do it the hard way though as Clark Warren’s equaliser for Red Bull looked like it might be a point clincher for the already relegated Red Bull. But goals from Fabricio Lucas and Joao Castelli put the Warriors back in contention and who knows how much longer the Warriors have left in them? JK Besiktas could also stay within 3 points of the Suckers, but they could only draw against struggling Vucje (who were only 5 points behind Besiktas) and found themselves closer to the relegation zone than top spot with their next game against Steppenwolf Suckers.

So the Suckers were closing in on the league title. If they could beat Besiktas and Lusitanian Warriors drew against SoS, they would win it.

ROUND 13

Spirit of Shankly FC 2-0 Lusitanian Warriors (Breckin ’40, Demot ’78)
Steppenwolf Suckers 3-1 JK Besiktas (Hollyfield ’26 ‘80, Mamora ’46) (Tabuas ’48)
Stiinta Bacau 3-0 Red Bull RC (Hanus ’37 ’55 ’63)
FK Vucje 1-1 Diabos de Alvalade (Tanti ’89) (Rodgerson ’63)

The main task at hand was for the Suckers to beat Besiktas. They did that rather convincingly; Brendan Hollyfield gave the Suckers the lead in 26 minutes before Constantino Mamora doubled the score at the start of the second half. Celso Tabuas got one back for Besiktas but Hollyfield’s second meant that if the other result went their way, the Suckers would be champions.

Well, good news from Spirit Stadium, as outgoing champions Spirit of Shankly FC hauled themselves out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Lusitanian Warriors. Freddie Breckin and Harry Demot got the goals that opened up a gap too big to be overcome by any other team, and so Steppenwolf Suckers were Ultimate League champions, their second title in the last three seasons.

That SoS win also had the side effect of relegating FK Vucje, who needed to beat Diabos de Alvalade in a huge relegation clash. However the game turned out bad for both sides as they could only draw with each other, leaving Vucje four points behind SoS and no way to save themselves. The relegation battle would be interesting now, with Besiktas, SoS and Diabos all facing the drop. Would all three promoted teams end up going down again or would we see a big hitter going down? Besiktas were at home to Diabos while SoS were away to Stiinta.

(Oh yeah, Stiinta won 3-0 against Red Bull with an Edvard Hanus hattrick too)

ROUND 14

So with the title secure, all that was left to play for was the relegation battle. Who would be going down, Besiktas, SoS or Diabos? Well, with two of them playing each other they couldn’t all lose…

If Besiktas beat Diabos then Diabos would go down. Any other result however would bring the Stiinta vs. SoS result into play. The first half was goalless, but Besiktas were the team on the front foot. The second half continued much in the same way but Besiktas were lacking penetration. Until the 88th minute that is, when Fausto Sousa set up Yilmaz Gunay for the big goal that keeps JK Besiktas in the top flight and sends Diabos de Alvalade down after 4 seasons in the top flight, two in which they finished as runners up.

Red Bull RC 0-2 FK Vucje (Ognjenovic ’57, Thurevik ’71)
Lusitanian Warriors 0-1 Steppenwolf Suckers (Eriksen ’21)
Stiinta Bacau 1-2 Spirit of Shankly FC (Hanus ’88) (Farley ’18, Wilhelm ‘69)
JK Besiktas 1-0 Diabos de Alvalade (Gunay ’88)

So that meant that outgoing champions Spirit of Shankly were spared from being relegated in their title defence season. They weren’t to know that though, as far as they were concerned, they needed a result against Stiinta, who would become the outright longest serving top flight side following Diabos’ relegation. Only for a season though as it seems SocC is moving the rebuild to the next stage next season. Anyway, Brendan Farley put SoS ahead in the first half to relieve the fans of relegation fears. Edvard Hanus thought he’d equalised for Stiinta, but the goal was chalked off. SoS got a second goal through Enzo Wilhelm who was such a key player for them last season in their title victory. Stiinta, former champions themselves, got one back in the 88th minute through Edvard Hanus but it didn’t prevent defeat. SoS were staying up but Hanus’ goal had a little extra spice to things. If Edvard Hanus hadn’t scored, then SoS would have finished in 3rd place on goal difference, but Stiinta take that place instead, a great achievement for a team in transition.

So, the final standings look like this.

JK Besiktas actually ended up finishing in 2nd place, as Lusitanian Warriors lost their last game to the champions Steppenwolf Suckers, who end the season 8 points clear at the top, quite some season they had in the end. Diabos de Alvalade couldn’t stay in the top flight and go down after four seasons with their new Serbian manager, they will likely be renamed something else next season. FK Vucje put up a real fight despite having to buy a new goalkeeper for this season following the retirement of Evan Luff, but Navarro was not enough to save them from the drop. And Red Bull’s dream debut in the top flight of the Ultimate League turned out to be a nightmare; they never really got going at all and managed just 1 point. It was one of the closest seasons in Ultimate League history in terms of the midtable, even if the Suckers ran away with the title in the end.

In X11 however, team strength and age is not a solid guarantee for success and nowhere was that best proven than in Division 1 this season. Last season’s cup finalists Grand Rapids and Glorious Bastards contested promotion to the top flight, after both were piped to the post by teams that might be considered weaker. So it’s a great job for both Crunchieisgod and Clementy123 who guided their sides, Falkirk Flyers and Clem Legacy FC, to Division 1 titles. It marks a return to the top flight for Falkirk Flyers after a 6 season absence while for Clem Legacy this will be their first ever season in the top flight of the Ultimate League. Finally, the strongest team in the entire league finally made it into the top flight as Glorious Bastards beat Grand Rapids by a single goal to secure a first ever top flight campaign.

We managed to catch up with an interview with Neno4 after his side won their second title. At the time of this interview, the final round of matches had yet to be played and Real Madrid were still in the Champions' League.

XD: Congratluations on winning the Ultimate League title. You are now level with Best11 and cpt_neaza on UL titles, only Jesus1983 has now won more Ultimate League titles than yourself, how does this make you feel?

Neno4: Oh man, it feels amazing, I would have never imagined winning 2 more titles after my return, but I guess experience matters. Well I guess I'm going after Jesus next.

XD: The season was ridiculously close at points. After 8 rounds when there was only 3 points between the top 7, what was it like to be leading such a close pack?

Neno4: It definitely was a very interesting season and I was trying, but couldn't put it in higher gear until the 2nd half of the season. Everything changed after my Cup exit which was a blessing in disguise as I could put all my focus on winning the League. And exactly that happened as I went on a run of 13 points out of 15 and here we are with another title.

XD: You will of course be returning to the XCL next season after your title win this season. How much do you think it affected your chances of defending the title in Season 34 and do you plan to approach things differently this time?

Neno4: Oh the XCL definitely affected my chances on winning the title last season. It's not easy playing 3 matches a week and 1 of those is against a much stronger opponent. But after 2 failures in the XCL I want for once to play good and progress to the knockout rounds. I don't have many younger players so there is no point in playing for development in the XCL. I guess it will be another season of playing on 3 fronts and trying to do better than last time.

XD: How important was the addition of Giovanni Tatto this season?

Neno4: Very important. As we all know a strong midfield is a key to a success in this game so I couldn't enter the season with a teenager as starter. So Tatto came and did amazing job in holding the midfield together and dominating some amazing midfields in the Ultimate League.

But I would have to give the MPV to Christian Eriksen who really stepped up and was amazing this season both holding the midfield together and scoring some amazing free kick goals at the most important moments.

And I have to mention the captain and the rock of the team without whom we won't have 2 titles Lawrence Donaldson who now has 332 matches for the team, most of them as the leader and best player on the field.

XD: If Glorious Bastards get promoted via the play-offs, how much of a threat to your title do you think they will be?

Neno4: Oh I've been following them last season and they have amazing squad, but have underperformed a little, but still are great challenge for me and the other teams in the elite with their amazingly skilled players. But I've been beating higher skilled teams all my life so it will be nothing new that I haven't seen and even then they still have to get to the elite which is not a certainty yet.

XD: How does this title win compare to your last two? Is it more satisfying to have won it on the last day or to have it all wrapped up with a game to spare?

Neno4: Oh definitely prefer it this way, much better for my heart. And now some youngsters will get a chance to improve their DV and after having won the title against a managerless team last time it feels good to prove to everybody we are the best in the Ultimate League.

XD: Your profile lists Real Madrid as one of your supported teams. Real haven’t had the easiest of seasons so far, but can they still make it to the Champions League final?

Neno4: For sure they can make it. Everything can happen, but a Real - Barca final would be amazing. It will be the big one, winner gets all match, but first they have to take care of business and dispatch Juve who are a good team, but to be honest, not on the level of Real or Barca. Hopefully I won't eat my words.

XD: Thank you and congrats on another title.

Neno4: Thanks man for the interview and hopefully we'll do another one after next season.

Cup news:

Round 5:

The big shock of the round saw last season’s semi-finalists and a team who have recently always featured in the latter stages of the cup, Kyotiez Killerz, go out to Division 3 side Luceafarul FC, the Romanian side giving Freddysophia’s side an early cup exit. Sampdoria Iasi, who made the semis last season, went out to Division 1a leaders Falkirk Flyers, while 14th seeds Sporting Mancunia went out of the cup to highly rated Division 2 side Molas. Expect to see these guys in the top flight very soon.

Division 1 side Everton F.C, 17th seeds, went out to 269th seeds JoMo Elite, with JoMo’s Per-Olov Kjellman scoring a dramatic 91st minute winner. Division 1 side RAK suffered a shock defeat to Division 3’s Elbasani, Posh All Stars went out to Division 4 side Toon Army and top flight side Steppenwolf Suckers were eliminated by another upcoming side in FC Diana-Juniorii in dubious circumstances, despite having the better tactics the club could not break down Diana-Juniorii’s defence and Sean Connery’s 5th minute goal turned out to be enough to win the game for the Division 2 side. So now Diabos de Alvalade and Spirit of Shankly were the only top flight sides left.

97th seeds Kansu were eliminated on penalties by Cricket Utd who after many a season in the doldrums seem to be coming back into the Ultimate League limelight while Canning Town Stars were bidding for a third UL cup with progression to the 6th round at the expense of La Celeste.

Round 6:

This round saw a huge shock as cup holders Glorious Bastards were eliminated by Division 1b rivals Not So Young Boys. The two teams are competing at opposite ends of the table but despite dominating the game, the Bastards could not find a way past Shaka Hislop and ended up going out on penalties. The result didn’t do much to dampen the mood of Pbaiona, who’d endured a similar result against FCD in ADN two days before in the XCL. Incredibly, that meant that Spirit of Shankly, Joelitos and IFK Goteborg were the only ones from the last 16 last season to make it to Round 7. So there were only two top flight sides left and only 3 of the last 16 left in the cup, this was going to be an interesting tournament.

Diabos de Alvalade only just made it through on penalties though. Raptordannyel was furious with the defeat, telling Diabos manager PunisherBg that he “didn’t deserve to win”. Punisherbg responded with “Haha! Why? Please enlighten me.”

Someone was going to need to step up and announce themselves as the favourite, but who?

Round 7:

The highest seeds left in the cup, Spirit Of Shankly, negotiated Mighty Mighty Reds to make it into the last 16 and while most of the top 16 seeds that were left in the cup made it through, former finalists IFK Goteborg were knocked out by former top flight side D.T.S 1972, 10 seasons after the Malaysian side were in the top flight, Small_rain has had to build a very different side this time around. Another former top flight side in Falkirk Flyers, as well as looking to drop the former tag from next season were into the last season after beating Kruger FC. One of the stronger sides left in the competition in Molas surprisingly went out to fellow Division 3 side B.O.K while Division 2d rivals FC Diana-Juniorii and NK Pivorvana Lasko both advanced. Green Orange needed penalties to beat KAIF while Diabos de Alvalade, The Stretford Enders, Clem Legacy FC, Bangor Gallacticos, Winners F.C, West Adelaide FC, Balkanski Spijun and La Veire Chapelle completed the last 16.

Last 16

Spirit of Shankly FC 3-1 Balkanski Spijun (Konchinawa ‘1 ‘88, Kirkby ‘86)  (Gentner ’51)
Diabos de Alvalade 2-1 Joelitos FC (Mario ’21, Rodgerson ‘87) (Haggstrand ’34)
FC Diana-Juniorii 3-0 Falkirk Flyers (Tortella ’72 PEN ’80, Peylarade ’76)
Clem Legacy FC 3-2 Winners F.C. (Oswald ’54 PEN ‘90, Castolo ’85) (Kulik ’19, Jardin PEN ’48)
NK Pivorvana Lasko 0-1 D.T.S. 1972 (Yessaian ‘109)
The Stretford Enders 2-0 La Veire Chapelle (Hammond ’26, Crossland ’92)
Green Orange 2-1 B.O.K (Vacker ’25, Tevez ’33) (Millberg ’74)
Bangor Gallacticos 2-3 West Adelaide FC (Ahnfeldt ’56, MacCreadie ’92) (Stark ’42 ’79, Qvist ’72)

So then, a lot of unfamiliar names in the last 16 but which one of these would be the eventual winners? The highest ranked team in the draw were reigning UL champions Spirit of Shankly who had previously won the cup in Season 23 and 12 seasons later were looking to do so again. Two late goals from Mathias Kirkby and Seigo Konchinawa saw them into the Quarter Finals. Diabos also needed a late goal to get past a defensively orientated Joelitos, who had set up in a 5-3-2 formation.

Angelo Tortella had a bit of a reputation in the Ultimate League cup as one of the most feared free kick takers when he was at his old side, known best as Pistatchus and Immortal, the then Division 4 side often punched above their weight and took some big scalps. Now he was looking to win the cup before he retired and after a slow start, he scored twice in a 3-0 demolition of Division 1a promotion contenders Falkirk Flyers  to send the Romanians into the quarter finals.

Also going to the quarters were Clem Legacy FC, who bettered their last 16 appearance in Season 31  by beating Winners F.C in a thrilling game. Kulik gave Winners the lead but then lost their goalkeeper Abdul-Nasir to injury, forcing defender Frank McGrath in goal. Despite this, they went 2-0 up through a penalty and things were looking bleak for Clem Legacy when Tom Arnold went off injured. However they staged an epic comeback as Frank Oswald pulled one back for Legacy with a free kick. After Kulik’s second effort was disallowed, the game turned with the sending off of Edwin Dymanowski. Legacy then equalised with Ricardo Castolo before they were dramatically awarded a penalty in the 90th minute. With promotion to the top flight also a possibility, this is turning out to be some season for Clem Legacy.

RedStarBelowGrade has previously won the Power League title with AC Millerpool, but since moving to the Stretford Enders has been stuck in and around Division 3. But could he be adding another trophy to his cabinet? They were against Division 2 side La Veire Chappelle and goals from Hammond and Crossland saw them take their place.

D.T.S 1972 were in the top flight exactly 10 seasons ago. 10 seasons later a very different looking side was looking to add a new chapter to this club’s history. They made it past NK Pivovarna Lasko with the only chance of the game in extra time. The other two ties saw Green Orange dispose of B.O.K and West Adelaide defeat a team from the division below them in Bangor Gallacticos to move into the quarter finals, Hannes Stark the star.

Quarter Finals:

Spirit of Shankly FC 0-1 The Stretford Enders (Lago ’79)
Diabos de Alvalade 1-2 Green Orange (Mario ’91) (Ibrahim ’69 ‘120)
FC Dianii-Juniorii 1-0 Clem Legacy FC (Tortella ’86)
West Adelaide FC 1-0 D.T.S 1972 (Stark ’10)

After a goalless first half, Division 3 side The Stretford Enders came out to dominate the game against top flight Spirit of Shankly. Adding to the unpredictable nature of the cup so far, the tie was unexpectedly won by The Stretford Enders and the goalscorer, Fausto Lago, was playing Division 6 football just two seasons ago. The reigning Ultimate League champions and cup favourites were out, and now Diabos de Alvalade had the chance to become the favourites by progressing against Green Orange and try to claim what they may feel at the club is silverware they deserve after missing out twice on the league title in the last two seasons.

Green Orange however were no pushovers and thought they’d taken the lead in the first half, only to see referee Justin Thyme rule it out. Diabos suffered a blow when Keith Rooke was injured early on in the second half and with Punisher having cut the squad down to just a starting eleven and some youths, 17 year old Juliano Merino  was forced to replace him. Green Orange took advantage of Diabos’ misfortune and Timotei Ibrahim gave them the lead. Diabos knew they had to score now and started piling on the pressure, going close twice before Bartolo Correa’s resistance was broken by Custodio Mario’s 91st minute goal to take the game to extra time. However, just before it looked like going to penalties, Timotei Ibrahim’s 120th minute goal, the last kick of the game, saw Green Orange into the Ultimate League cup semi finals for the very first time.

Clem Legacy’s cup run faced a stern test against FC Dianii-Juniorii and Dianii dominated the game. They had a lot of trouble however trying to break down Ciprian Haisan until an 86th minute free kick. Angelo Tortella converted this free kick and sent Dianii into the semi finals. They were joined by West Adelaide who knocked out former top flight side D.T.S 1972 with a single goal from Hannes Stark.

Semi Finals:

FC Dianii Juniorii 1-1 The Stretford Enders (Connery ’29) (Clementin ’85) (Streford win 4-3 on penalties)
West Adelaide 1-3 Green Orange (Weymouth ’76) (Cardonosa ‘7, Vacker ’39, Leopardi ‘80)

OK, who could have predicted these teams would be the last four? None of these teams have ever won a major trophy before but today it would be their first. OK, RedStarBelowGrade has won the Power League and cup with his old side before , but nothing with his current side. They had to get past an upcoming side in FC Dianii Juniorii though. If you thought there was shurley shome mishtake in Sean Connery giving Dianii the lead then you were wrong as his goal gave Diannii the lead. After that, both sides thought they’d scored, only for the referee to disallow both goals. But in the 85th minute, as Dianii seemed to be closing in on victory, Denis Clementin struck the equaliser for RSBG’s team. We would be going to extra time, where neither side could manage to find a winner. So a place in the Ultimate League cup final would be decided on penalties…

Angelo Tortella was first up and he struck his penalty in the back of the net. Stretford goalkeeper Nick Englund responded. Phillip Peylarade was next up for Juniorii and he had no problems. Jonatan Kay then equalised for Stretford before Mikal Chozas saw his effort brush outside the post. Maxim Baranov had the chance to put Streford ahead and he made no mistake from the spot. Sean Connery was next for Dianii and he scored to keep the pressure on but it was advantage to Stretford. Gordon Crossland’s penalty put Dianii on the verge of a cup exit and the pressure was on their goalkeeper Runar Ewertsson to keep them in it. However, Nick Englund got down to his right to save Ewertsson’s penalty and The Stretford Enders were in the cup final.

In the other semi. Green Orange took the lead against West Adelaide and no surprise it was Jesus Cardonosa who scored it. Augustin Vacker added a second goal for Green Orange and the dreams of a cup final were getting closer to reality. They suffered a huge blow however when free kick taker Francesco Tevez was injured, forcing 34 year old Lesley Bates on in his place. West Adelaide took advantage of Green Orange’s weaker 3 man defence and got one back through Halvar Qvist, or at least they thought they did but it was disallowed. West Adelaide did score though through Gregor Weymouth but Green Orange made it 3-1 through Leopardi. West Adelaide scored in the 88th minute however to set the pulse racing and nerves in the Green Orange camp, Henry Duff drawing the Australian side within 1 goal of extra time. However, West Adelaide could not find the decisive blow and Green Orange are in the Ultimate League Cup final for the first time.

The Final:

So, the 35th Ultimate League Cup final would take place between Green Orange and The Stretford Enders, it was the first time that neither side was from the top two divisions of the Ultimate League since Jesus and his Pandas took on Lusitanian Warriors, and both those sides made it to the top flight. Is that a sign of things to come from these two? Few could have predicted that the final would be contested between these two teams and interestingly, both were relegated from their respective divisions, a sign that both were going full pelt towards the cup.

The Stretford Enders kicked off their cup campaign against Division 6 side S.L.B which they dispatched quite easily over two legs. Division 5 side Hawkinge FC were next and they were no match for The Stretford Enders. Another Division 5 side, Florence Town, lost in the 4th round before Malaya Tigers and Frastappa were dispatched. Division 1 side Not So Young Boys then lost to a 90t minute goal which started a run of teams from higher division being knocked out, first La Veire Chapelle, then Spirit of Shankly FC and then FC Diana-Juniorii. The team was previously known as Gooners F.C under FMRealism until his resignation in Season 29, when RedStarBelowGrade left AC Millerpool, who had previously won the Power League, to join them. And in his 6th season in charge they are now potentially on the verge of winning something.

But standing in their way was Green Orange, who began their cup campaign against Division 7 RianFC. After that, they knocked out rep evolution, Optimus Prime XT, Scottys RFC (on penalties) and Seaforth Highlanders before a thrilling 5-3 victory over KAIF, they then knocked out B.O.K before beating top flight side Diabos de Alvalade with a 120th minute winner. Finally they beat West Adelaide FC to make the final.

Both teams had absences coming into this game; Francesco Tevez was suspended for Green Orange although they decided to play with 19 year old defender Kees Gullit in a 4-5-1 formation, Leopardi chosen to lead the line for Green Orange. Streford meanwhile had seen Denis Clemintin pick up his third yellow card of the season in a 2-0 defeat to Taunton Town FC, meaning he would miss the final and leave Stretford Enders with only 13 players. They opted to play defender Edmond Hammond up front alongside Gordon Crossland in a 3-5-2 formation.

Ann Onym was chosen to referee the cup final. Hammond and Crossland kicked things off and we were underway. The Stretford Enders had an early shot on goal inside 3 minutes and thought they’d scored, with Jaime Marrow peeling away in celebration however, the goal was ruled out. Disappointment for Stretford, and Green Orange wasted no time in responding. The loss of Francesco Tevez showed though as Cal Hodges was unable to convert an indirect free kick. Leonardo Leopardi had the chance to give Green Orange the lead 10 minutes later but he didn’t take it. As the first half drew to a close, Augustin Vacker had a great chance to give Green Orange the lead, but Nick Englund in the Stretford goal saved it. Half Time and  this possible once in a lifetime opportunity for both teams was 0-0, with Green Orange having had more chances.

Timotei Ibrahim was brought on for the ineffective Leopardi at half time, two minutes later Green Orange’s Lionel Messy was yellow carded. Kees Gullit then picked up a slight knock, which Green Orange took action over by bringing on Ludovic Hrzavy. Would that make their defence too old though? Green Orange had a free kick straight on goal through Jesus Cardonosa and it seemed that they were going to score eventually, but Cardonosa is no free kick taker and his aim was wayward. Stretford got a chance to respond and it was 22 year old Artie Clockwork with the chance. But Bartolo Correa was barely troubled. Cardonosa had another chance to give Green Orange the lead but Nick Englund was having some game. Even so it was a frustrating game for Stretford and Kasper Elmlund showed this when he got booked with three minutes to go, but neither side could find a goal in 90 minutes. The final was to go to extra time, the last final to do that was in Season 32 between Lusitanian Warriors and Dave FC.

Extra time kicked off and Green Orange soon won a free kick, but Lionel Messy made a mess of his shot and it failed to find the back of the net. Streford won a free kick as the first half of extra time drew to an end, but Jaime Marrow’s shot did not trouble Bartolo Correa at all. And that was how the first half of extra time finished. In the second half, Timotei Ibrahim had a volley on goal, but Nick England just wouldn’t be beaten. So, neither side could find a goal despite Green Orange’s sheer domination and for the first time since Season 31, the cup final would be going to penalties.

First up to take a penalty was Jesus Cardonosa. As Green Orange’s regular penalty taker he has a lot of experience in this situation and it showed when he beat Nick Englund for the first time today. Jaime Marrow was next up for the Stretford Enders, he stepped up to take it… and it was saved by Bartolo Correa. Green Orange had the advantage in the tie. Augustin Vacker was next up for Green Orange and he had no problems making it 2-0. Goalkeeper Nick Englund was next up for Stretford, but RSBG’s team proved to be woeful at penalties and now Eugenio Yiyi could attempt to put Green Orange 3-0 up and potentially on the verge of winning the shootout. However, Englund atoned for his earlier penalty miss by keeping out Yiyi. So Jonathan Kay now had the chance to put Stretford back in the tie and at least Stretford managed to score. Cal Hodges was next up for Green Orange and if he scored, then the pressure would be on Stretford. Hodges did indeed score and the pressure was now on Maxim Baranov to keep his team in the game. If he missed, it was all over. Baranov could do no wrong though and Stretford were still in it, but Green Orange still had the game in their hands. If Timotei Ibrahim scored then Green Orange would win the cup. Ibrahim stepped up to take it… AND SCORED! Green Orange had won the Ultimate League cup on penalties. What a day for the Division 2 side.

Green Orange 0-0 The Stretford Enders (Green Orange win 4-2 on penalties)

Smiles all around in those in green and orange as Jesus Cardonosa hoisted the Ultimate League cup trophy into the air and those in the main stadium of the Xpert Arena could cheer for joy. While all that was going on, we caught up with Green Orange manager GarethLloyd for a post-match interview.

XD: Congratulations on winning the Ultimate League cup, how does this make you feel?

GarethLloyd: Surprised. I have been building up the Green Orange team for a number of seasons after some rather tasty juniors joined the club. We have moved up the divisions but have found a lack of depth in the squad difficult. Never in our wildest dreams would we ever have thought we would win the Ultimate League Cup. We are definitely in shock.

XD: Was the cup ever a goal of yours at the start of the season? If not, when did it take priority?

GarethLloyd: Never. We mostly use the cup as a means to get good DV. Harder components make the squad rotation difficult and we normally get knocked out on penalties against what at first appears to be weaker teams. Oh the irony that penalties got us a long way and brought us the CUP!!!

XD: Which was the hardest cup tie for you?

GarethLloyd: Too many. Scottys RFC went to the 7th penalty taker. Seaforth Highlanders was a goal in extra time. KAIF, what an exciting game, 5 -3 score line doesn’t show how tough it was. Diabos de Alvalade were a very tough team and we played our best to beat them. And then there was the final against The Stretford Enders. I so did not expect to win.

XD: Francesco Tevez was injured in the semi final; do you feel your team really missed him in the final with all those missed chances?

GarethLloyd: Our three key and very talented defenders are the core of our team. We are very attacking and if they are not there we do tend to leak goals like a sieve. Tevez is also our expert freekick taker who often wins games when it goes to 1- 0. We had seven shots on target in the final and didn’t put any of them away. So we probably did miss him.

XD: You will be playing in the Xpert Champions League next season, are you looking forward to playing against some of the best teams on the site?

GarethLloyd: uhm...no. Strange as it sounds I am really scared about this. Extra games will put a huge strain on our small squad. I may need to buy some extra players (prize money for the cup needs some extra 0's). But it will be fun to play against the best teams on the site. But we are so not one of them and I suspect a lot of 0 - 5 loses.

XD: Green Orange were relegated from Division 2 this season, will you be able to make a quick return?

GarethLloyd: No. With cup and the Champions League adding to the regular season, I suspect we may be relegated again. The squad is starting to look a little old as well. Does anyone want to pay Bale-like value for some of my players? They have Champions League experience and have won trophies! :)

XD: Thank you and good luck for next season.

XCL news:

Tour de France 3-0 Spirit of Shankly (Flenning  PEN ‘3, Onn ’35 ’42)
FCD in ADN 0-0 Glorious Bastards

The last time Andyjones and Blu3red played each other there were a lot of comments after the match…

Back in XCL XXIX...

11 seasons later and Blu had a new team he was in charge of, one which had reached the XCL final last season and was arguably better than the last one he had. SoS were without Enzo Wilhelm for this one which didn’t help matters. SoS will probably be the team that finishes last in the group although that’s not to say they are one of the worst teams in the competition, far from it, its just their group, which includes The AntiChrists and Balka Juniors, is one of the hardest XCL groups in history. Leif Flenning and Afnan Onn put TdF 3-0 up inside the first half. However, TdF would lose Afnan Onn to injury in the second half and SoS would go an entire 45 minutes without conceding a goal. The XCL draw may be a blessing in disguise for SoS though as they could concentrate on the league title in the ridiculously close division.

Pbaiona meanwhile made a return to the XCL, having last taken part in XCL 33. He went out in the group stages, but now had a multi million econ team at his disposal which was arguably the strongest side in the Ultimate League. How would they compare to new boys FCD in ADN who were only here having lost the cup final to Laranjas Podres? With the other sides in the group stronger, it was imperative the GB won this game. GB dominated the game but struggled to break down Zarko Kanan in the FCD goal. GB were racking up plenty of yellow cards in the process and a red seemed inevitable. It arrived when Valter Luxat was shown a straight red card, a big miss for GB and FCD had a chance to nick the game. A frustrating day at the office for Pbaiona and the XCL is only going to get harder with Homer and Gerrards Men still to come.

Balka Juniors XIV 2-0 Spirit of Shankly FC (Benavent ’33, Forsgren ’84)
Gerrards Men 0-2 Glorious Bastards (McTrigg ’60 ’88)

SoS’s second XCL attempt is seemingly going to be no longer than the group stages after they shipped 5 goals in their first 2 games. Balka Juniors XIV won 2-0 against SoS with goals from their goalkeeper Benavent and their captain Dan Forsgren.

After the disappointing draw against FCD in ADN, Glorious Bastards picked up a huge 3 points away to Gerrards Men to go top of Group F. Graeme McTrigg got both goals for Glorious and it seems that while this won’t be an easy group, it is Glorious and Homer that have the edge in this group. Their encounter next week was to be absolutely pivotal.

Spirit of Shankly FC 0-0 The AntiChrists
Glorious Bastards 2-0 Homer X11 FC (Fruta PEN ’25, Chettle ’88)

SoS got their first point of the campaign with a 0-0 draw at home to The AntiChrists. It was a great point, but one that is more likely to hinder the AntiChrists than help Shankly.

UL hopes rest on Glorious Bastards who faced an important game against Homer X11 FC, the two sides have had identical results so far this XCL but now faced each other in a double header. Tadeu Fruta’s penalty gave GB the lead before Henry Chettle’s late goal settled matters. If GB can get something out of the return leg against Homer, it’ll go a long way towards winning the group.

The AntiChrists 1-0 Spirit Of Shankly FC (Exton ’80)
Homer X 11 FC 2-0 Glorious Bastards (Prates ’74 ’86)

No repeat of the goalless draw for SoS against AntiChrists. In fairness, most teams who go to St. Ameneo usually lose and while SoS held their own, they could do nothing to prevent Julien Exton’s free kick from finding the back of the net and making it a win for The AntiChrists. That victory combined with TdF’s draw with Balka Juniors meant that SoS were out of the Champions League. It was always going to be difficult to qualify from the group and SoS can now focus on their league and cup campaigns. With SoS in the quarter finals of the Ultimate League cup and the highest ranked team in the cup, they were going to be favourites to win it.

GB’s chances of qualification took a blow when they lost 2-0 to Homer X 11 FC away from home. It was an important win for Homer as they were trying to make it a 3 horse race for promotion. Two goals from Arilo Prates sent Homer on their way to victory and Amilcar Porfirio had a goal ruled out. It meant that Gerrards Men were able to go top of the group on goal difference with 7 points and GB will now have to beat them at the Coliseu das Enrabadelas to progress.

Spirit of Shankly 0-3 Balka Juniors XIV (Nelson ’44, Benavent ’51, Forsgren ’80)
Glorious Bastards 1-0 Gerrards Men (McTrigg ’77)

SoS were already out, so it was not too much of a surprise that they lost 3-0 at home to Balka. This coming off the back of a cup exit and a slip into the relegation zone, things weren’t looking too good in the SoS camp.

While SoS were out, Ultimate League hopes were still alive thanks to Pbaoina’s Glorious Bastards after they beat Gerrards Men by a single goal from Graeme McTrigg. Gerrards Men were the group leaders so this was a huge victory and thanks to Homer X11 stumbling to a draw away to FCD in ADN, like GB did, then they were top of the group with a 3 point margin and although they weren’t qualified yet, they simply needed at least a point from the game against FCD to go through to the next round, they won’t be one of the highest seeds

Spirit of Shankly FC 0-0 Tour de France
Glorious Bastards 2-3 FCD in ADN (Hardau ’21 ’93) (Molloy ‘7 ’34, Pollock ’73)

Well Andyjones didn’t lose to Blu3red at Spirit Stadium the last time the two met and he didn’t lose this time, although he didn’t win. SoS bid farewell to XCL football on a high by drawing against the group winners Tour de France. TdF therefore finished on 12 points while SoS were heading out.

The Ultimate League has a team in the last 16, and a group winner too as Glorious Bastards won Group G despite a 3-2 home defeat to FCD in ADN. Josh Molloy put FCD in front in the 7th minute but Paulica Hardau equalised 14 minutes later. FCD restored the lead through Molloy’s second goal and Mikey Pollock made it 3-1 in the second half, Hardau’s 93rd minute goal nothing more than a consolation. But Homer X 11 could only draw against to Gerrard’s Men so GB won the group by a point. They are the lowest ranked group winners though and will take on CFC Gun Crime in the last 16 who actually scored more points than GB despite finishing 2nd in their group; they were a point off Rated Alcochete who went the entire group stage unbeaten in the end.

CFC Gun Crime 2-1 Glorious Bastards (Enfield ’14, Luger ‘49) (Fruta PEN ’17)

It’s important to note that Glorious Bastards had a late flight to catch from the Xpert Arena back home for this Champions League clash, as they had the Division 1 play-off final against Grand Rapids on the exact same time. One thing’s for sure, the club will never have a bigger day than this one. GB had a stronger side than Gun Crime but the timing of the play-off final as well as Seachel being the number 1 English manager made this closer than it would have otherwise been. Pbaiona named the exact same starting eleven that beat Grand Rapids in the play-off final, but Gun Crime took advantage of GB’s tiredness to take the lead in the 14th minute. Tadeu Fruta’s penalty then equalised the contest just three minutes later but it was clear that Gun Crime were the team on top and Calum Luger restored the lead in the second half. That turned out to be the end of the game and GB had a tough time ahead of them in the second leg, but the away goal meant that as long as they kept a clean sheet, they only needed to win the game.

But GB have a Change Report to deal with before then…

Transfer news:

Following the takeover at Cormorans that saved the club from extinction, new manager Wilk9er has spent no time putting his own stamp on the former two time champions. He has sold veterans Mathias Christiansson and Barry Burnell for a combined 11 million and invested in three new youngsters on the cheap. The highly skilled Christansson was a bit too good to be playing in Division 6 and he was sold to another Ultimate League side, albeit only a division up in The Religion of Para.

Relegated Shark Utd scored a huge coup in the transfer market when they managed to secure the signing of 19 year old 6 skilled free kick taker Rick Carter for just 463 100 econ, a deal described as the bargain of the century in some corners. At the other end of the spectrum, Division 5 side Cwanas paid nearly 9 million econ for 29 year old striker Vinnie Ashbee and Division 6 side Girondins de Bordeaux paid 11 million econ for 23 year old Alfie Hand.

Big manager changes:

After seeing his team thrashed week in week out, Red Bull RC manager Slbx7 decided to throw in the towel and join League of Champs side Krothona BK. His replacement is Whatboy who has a very difficult task ahead of him with the squad he’s inherited.

Division 3b side Sampdoria Iasi, semi finalists in the cup last season, announced that their manager Sstardust had resigned… but who would have thought that the former top flight side would get their old manager back? Unbelievably they did, diesonne announced a shock return to his old team with which he enjoyed much success. He took them into the Ultimate League top flight and although they never won anything, his team had the resolve to bounce back after promotion twice, before they eventually fell away into Division 6 and diesonne was sacked after an extended period of inactivity. The club’s recent revival will no doubt be boosted by the return of their most successful manager. In fact it was, Sampdoria got promoted back to Division 2!

After several seasons at the helm of F.C. Dobrogea, who he took up to Division 1, Skipper_Kowalski decided to leave his Division 3 side when a vacancy at 200 million econ rated St. John’s & Friends became available. His replacement was LuddeRaket, who left Bendtner Boys to take over at Dobrogea. Rakket then proceeded to guide his new side to promotion to Division 2 via the play-offs.

Former two time champions Cormorans F.C were in danger of going out of business at the conclusion of Season 35 after seasons of decline and name changes which resulted in them becoming known as Miticos Utd FC. However, the club managed to survive after Wilk9er came out of retirement to take charge of the team, even rebranding the club back to Cormorans.

So, another season comes to an end and with it, Steppenwolf Suckers have made sure that when people look back on this era of Ultimate League history, it is them who will be the team who are remembered. But who knows? Maybe next season could see a new emerging force in the top flight. One who’s name suggests it’ll do anything for success...
