The AntiChrists
Division 6:7, Hattrick League
Manager: Vet ej
Meet new champ, same as old 1 (updated)
If you were expecting this article to be another entry into the long standing Chrille vs. METALAC rivalry… then I’m afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere. Both managers had moved on from the Hattrick League, last time we left you off with the sensational news that Corleone Family manager V1klund had left his team to join the leaders AntiChrists. But before that happened, Chrille’s backroom staff took charge for one final match before following him to Black Lotus.

ROUND 8

Stavie FC 1-2 The Corleone Family (Leitão ’11) (Merouco ‘8, Aganzo ’86)
Badabing United 2-0 Real Bucuresti (Falque ’59, Thijssen ’77)
The AntiChrists 2-0 Hanham Harriers (Mino ’38, Bainbridge ’71)
Bolt Thrower 0-5 Currahee Valiants (Gama ‘1, Baranov ’42, Henningsson ’72 ’85 ’88)

Chrille may have left the AntiChrists, but his staff carried out instructions for the game against Hanham Harriers nevertheless, and The AntiChrists won 2-0. Corleone Family beat Stave 2-1 away from home in what turned out to be V1klund’s final game in charge, he moved to The AntiChrists in the very next game and Scottish manager RSole took charge. RSole has been playing since 2008 and apparently his interest in the game has not diminished over time like what tends to happen to many managers. His last post was at Brunei who he took over in Division 7 and left when they were challenging for promotion to Division 4..

Elsewhere, Currahee thrashed Bolt Thrower 5-0 and Badabing United got an easy 2-0 win over Real Bucuresti.

ROUND 9

Hanham Harriers 0-1 Badabing United (Eser ’76)
The Corleone Family (Zetterlund ’20, Vanberg ’32, Gudfinsson ’69)
The AntiChrists 2-0 Stavie FC (Exton ’56 ’84)
Currahee Valiants 3-0 Real Bucuresti (Boyle ’11, Henningsson ’51, Heald ’88)

RSole’s first game in charge of Corleone Family was against Bolt Thrower. In the past, that might have been a nightmare debut, but Bolt Thrower are a very different team nowadays. Both managers joined their clubs in the middle of the Hattrick League season. The Corleone Family proceeded to stroll to an easy 3-0 win with Torsten Zetterlund opening the scoring and getting his first goal for the club since signing midweek.

The AntiChrists also picked up a win, with Julien Exton getting both goals in V1klund’s first league match in charge.  Currahee got their second comfortable win in a row against a rebuilding side when they thrashed Real Bucuresti 3-0 while Badabing United are emerging as a real surprise package and sit 3rd in the league after a 1-0 away win over Hanham Harriers. They have collected 18 points so far despite a goal difference of just 4.

ROUND 10

Stavie FC 0-1 Badabing United (Eser ’37)
The Corleone Family 0-0 The AntiChrists
Real Bucuresti 3-0 Bolt Thrower (Backman ’52 ’58, Sahlgren ’61)
Hanham Harriers 1-1 Currahee Valiants (Hoost ’71) (Baranov ’62)

This was a big round as 1st took on 2nd, albeit with the 1st placed team having a significant advantage over the second. V1klund played both these games away from home, having taken charge of The Corleone Family in the first encounter. This time though, he was in charge of The AntiChrists, against his old club for the first time. V1klund got a warm reception on his return to his old club, who are trying to find their way under new manager RSole. RSole tried a creative lineup, putting all round defender Nicolae Sandel and all round midfielder Cornelio Aganzo in a front two, playing a 3-5-2 formation. The strategy worked as Corleone dominated the game, despite Sandel getting injured early on. This might not have helped Corleone though, they only created 3 chances and Claus-Dieter Matern was too good a goalkeeper to concede from a team firing 3 shots on goal. Ultimately the game finished 0-0 and The AntiChrists are strong favourites to land a 6th league title, which would put them 2nd on the all time number of Hattrick League titles won, with only Hellmoppers having won more.

Badabing United took advantage of Corleone’s draw to jump them into 2nd place, Alparslan Eser unsurprisingly the goalscorer. Meanwhile, it was battle of the rebuilding teams as Real Bucuresti took on Bolt Thrower… but Real still have a 19 bar goalkeeper and this swung the game spectacularly in Real’s favour. Staffan Backman and Carl-Petter Sahlgren are just two of the players that are bidding to become the next generation of Real Bucuresti stars and Backman staked a claim to be the team’s future first choice striker with two goals. Sahlgren got the third and Real Bucuresti had won the battle of the rebuilding teams. Finally, Hanham Harriers and Currahee Valiants drew with each other in the battle of the midtable teams.

ROUND 11

Currahee Valiants 3-0 Stavie FC (Runne ‘53, Baranov ’79 ’90)
Bolt Thrower 0-5 The AntiChrists (Otway ’22, Pawlowski ‘41’74, Stolpe ’60, Exton ’70)
Badabing United 1-2 The Corleone Family (Eser ’73) (Shabi ’71, Aganzo PEN ’88)
Real Bucuresti 0-4 Hanham Harriers (Gemeos ’19 ‘76, Braaf ’37 ‘79)

Having failed to beat The AntiChrists, Corleone Family now had their eyes set on winning the battle for 2nd, and they faced their direct competition for that place in Badabing United. Ashoory Shabi gave Corleone the lead in the second half, only for Alparslan Eser to equalise just two minutes later. A late penalty from Cornelio Aganzo sealed all three points. While that was going on, The AntiChrists moved a step closer to sealing the Hattrick League title by thrashing arch rivals Bolt Thrower 5-0. Somewhat ironically, this result confirmed the relegation of Bolt Thrower, who were now 10 points from safety with just 9 to play. It was now mathematically impossible for Bolt Thrower to stay up and after 8 seasons in the Hattrick League top flight, the two time champions bow out.

Elsewhere, Afonso Gemeos and Byron Braaf both got braces against the rebuilding Real Bucuresti and Currahee Valiants made it more likely that Stavie would be going down by winning 3-0 against them.

ROUND 12

Bolt Thrower 0-4 Hanham Harriers (Oosterwijk ’15, Ambarsari ’58 ‘90, Gemos ’75)
Stavie FC 7-0 Real Bucuresti (Adenan ‘1. Tamboer ‘8, Everett ’14, Gustaf Kung ’19, Hammerhand  ’35, Elliot ’73, Ramsay ‘88
The Corleone Family 4-0 Currahee Valiants (Gudfinsson ’48, Darbyshire ’74, Kallsson ’88 ’90)
Badabing United 0-2 The AntiChrists (Exton ’72, Mortagua ‘81)

The AntiChrists proceeded to move within a point of claiming the title after a 2-0 away win over Badabing United, they weren’t quite champions yet as The Corleone Family demolished Currahee Valiants 4-0 in what was overall a very one sided Matchday, with Stavie thrashing Real Bucuresti to give their survival hopes a boost. Real Bucuresti are relegated to Division 1 after 6 seasons in the top flight.

ROUND 13

Badabing United 3-0 Bolt Thrower (Eser ‘1, Renou ’30)
The AntiChrists 2-1 Currahee Valiants (Davis ’16, Matern PEN ’83) (Trump ’75)
Hanham Harriers 0-0 Stavie FC
Real Bucuresti 0-4 The Corleone Family (Petkaris ’17, Gudfinsson ’47 ’70, Agnazo PEN ’77)

This was a simple one, all The AntiChrists had to do was beat Currahee Valiants and they would win the title. That’s exactly what they did as Craig Davis gave them the lead inside 16 minutes. However, Currahee Valiant’s equalised when Donald Trump’s long lost relative Abe Trump turned in Yoshikiyo Miyazaki’s  penalty (if you can’t tell, Currahee were playing a youth side) but Claus Dieter Matern’s penalty ensured yet another title for The AntiChrists. It was their 6th Hattrick League title and it takes them to 2nd in terms of the number of titles won in the league’s history. Only Hellmoppers have won more than The AntiChrists.

Elsewhere, Hanham Harriers secured survival with a 0-0 draw against Stavie FC, the result means that Stavie are relegated from the Hattrick League after 3 seasons in the top flight.

ROUND 14

The Corleone Family 1-1 Hanham Harriers (Zetterlund ’52) (Saturnino ’78)
Curahee Valiants 0-0 Badabing United
Real Bucuresti 1-5 The AntiChrists (Wattanasak ’63) (Pawlowski ’29 ’45 ‘84, Stolpe ’72 ’91)
Bolt Thrower 0-4 Stavie FC (Harwood ‘5, Gustaf Kung ’10 ’17, Ince ’26)

With the title and relegation already confirmed, the final round was something of a non-event. Bolt Thrower were playing their last match in the top flight for now after an 8 season stay against another team who were relegated in Stavie FC, so they may be against each other again next season. And on this evidence, Stavie are much better placed for an instant return, as they thrashed Bolt Thrower 4-0. Real Bucuresti meanwhile managed to score! Wattanasak managed to get a goal to give the fans something to cheer in what has been a poor season otherwise. Josef Pawlowski scored a hattrick however with Stolpe getting a brace and The AntiChrists won 5-1 eventually.

The final standings look like this:

So despite both teams changing managers during the season, we had the very rare event of BOTH top two teams going the entire season unbeaten. So spare a thought for The Corleone Family who didn’t lose a single match, winning 8 and drawing 6, but they came up short to the AntiChrists who won 12 and drew 2 to take the title. Not very often a team goes the entire season unbeaten and doesn’t win the title.

We managed to catchup with V1klund for an interview after his side's title triumph at the end of a very unique season.

XD: Well, it's been a very weird season. You started the season drawing a lot of games and ending up with a mountain to climb, and yet end up winning the title with the team who was so far ahead, all the while going unbeaten across two teams during the entire season. Surely you've never had a season like this before?

V1k: At the start of the season, maybe I was a bit hungover from all the excitement and emotions last season. I weren’t really motivated or ready for another season and I was very sloppy with the tactics and then of course you drop a lot of points at this level. But when the XCL started I found real motivation again as it was a whole new challenge and I wanted to do my very best in it.

But it was a very weird season for sure. The thing is though, I was planning to leave The Corleone Family at the end of the season if an interesting team became available, as I wanted a new challenge, but I’d never imagine myself ending up at a rival team like The AntiChrists. But incredibly enough they became available and I decided to apply for the job. In hindsight, not my best decision.

XD: Obviously going for the title was the goal upon taking The AntiChrists job, but what are your plans for the long term future of The AntiChrists?

V1k: Actually it wasn’t. I couldn’t care less about this title to be honest, it means nothing to me. Really. The trophy may go into my cabinet but it was Chrille who guided the team to an eight point lead or something, all the credit should go to him.

As for the future, the team is very old so a complete rebuild should be around the corner, for whoever is in charge of the team. There’s some youngsters in the squad and they will get a lot of game time this season and I’m about to bring in a couple of more young players as well. But it’s still a strong team so don’t think this increased focus on youth means The AntiChrists won’t still compete for trophies.

XD: You were however turned over by your old side in the semi finals of the cup. Any disappointments over not being able to do the double?

V1k: Of course. To win the cup was one of my biggest goals this season as it’s a title I’ve never won before so it goes without saying it was very disappointing to go out in the semis. And doing so against my old team just made it worse of course. And they obviously ended up winning it…

XD: How did you find your first season in the XCL? Is going out in the last 16 good or bad in your eyes?

V1k: The sole reason I joined The AntiChrists was because I thought they could do better than The Corleone Family in the XCL. I figured they were a stronger team and I really wanted to go as deep as possible in the tournament so I applied for them. Funny how things work out, eh?

Player-for-player The AntiChrists is a fantastic squad, but maybe I didn’t fully understand and appreciate just what a strong force The Corleone Family is as a team. I pretty much felt unbeatable with them, but The AntiChrists hasn’t performed at all under my leadership. No doubt I could’ve done better tactically in key matches, but I can’t stop wonder how much the high average age, which I did have concerns about, was holding the team back.

XD: What do you make of your old team reaching the XCL Final?

V1k: I’m really happy for them. I hope they go on and win the final….. No, actually, I’m not and I don’t. It kills me to see how everything has turned out.

Me leaving the team I built up and turned into Hattrick League champions because I wanted to go as far as possible in the XCL, only to go out in the last 16 while watching them reach the quarter finals, semis and now the final… It’s a joke. It’s so frustrating. I’m beating myself up over it every time I log in here.

I’m going to be honest. I hope they lose the final. I really do. It’s bad enough they’re even in it, but I just couldn’t stand seeing the team I built up win the game’s biggest honor of them all while I’m sat here like an idiot. Why didn’t I believe in my own team?!

XD: Finally, what do you make of the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager?

V1k: *Mood switch from annoyed to excitement* When you asked me about Liverpool’s previous season and how I thought they could turn their fortunes around I said they weren’t going to without serious changes and I was right. None of the problems from last season was fixed in the summer so as night follows day it continued in the same way. But thankfully the penny finally dropped for the owners (that may have sounded a bit harsh) and the right decision was made. Jürgen Klopp being Liverpool manager really is a dream scenario and words can’t describe how excited I am! Everything he said at his unveiling last Friday… This really is the perfect manager for Liverpool. I can’t wait for the international break to be over so he can start working with the squad and get going with the games. Spurs away can’t come quick enough! But of course it will take time for him to build and mould the team, but I have all the patience in the world for this guy! I still can’t quite believe it to be honest. JÜRGEN KLOPP IS LIVERPOOL MANAGER!! It’s surreal.

XD: Thank you for your time

Cup:

Round 5:

In one of Chrille’s last few games in charge of The AntiChrists, he steered his side to a 3-0 victory over Real Wiscousin. The Corleone Family cruised past Sporting Lezpig, but there was a big shock when Currahee Valiants went out in Round 5 thanks to a 1-0 victory for Montauk Monsters, prompting Karrde to slam his youth keeper. Former cup winners Zalmoxis Wolfs were knocked out by Division 4 side Los Renegados, a big coup for Amadeupname’s side.

Round 6:

In the last round, V1klund had guided The Corleone Family safely through, but this time it was the turn of The AntiChrists to progress to the next round. Ryans Rangers were no match for the AntiChrists who are still going strong in the cup. Former top flight side Los Nisu might have fancied their chances against the managerless Corleone Family, but they remained in the cup thanks to Belarmino Merouco’s goal and Corlenio Aganzo’s penalty. Division 2 side Just Another Team were knocked out by relegation battling top flight side Stavie FC while Badabing United suffered a surprise defeat to ADS Sande

Round 7:

While managerial changes may have taken place it hasn’t disrupted either The AntiChrists or The Corleone Family. That said, The AntiChrists did need penalties to knock the Tootbumps out of the cup, misses from Usain Bolt and Nichlas Idensjo proved decisive in the end. Meanwhile, The Corleone Family progressed to the last 16 after a goal from Belarmino Merouco, but they needed extra time in order to secure that victory. It’s a steep learning curve for RSole as he comes to terms with managing a top team. Currahee conquerors Montauk Monsters appear to be taking their chances as they knocked out former top flight side Ljungskille Sportklubb. Stavie FC fell at this stage of the cup to CRESTA UNITED which meant that The AntiChrists and The Corleone Family were the only top flight sides left at this stage of the competition.

The all Division 1 clash between FK Ariljac and ADS Sande was settled in favour of Ariljac. Samba Juniors will also be hoping to go for the cup this season after they progressed to the next round, while 12th seeds Gravitas Free Zone were shocked by tap n spile fc who comfortably won 3-0. Another former top flight side, Smokin Aces, won 3-0 against 30th seeds FC 321 to move into the last 16. The other teams who make up our last 16 are Trujillanos Fútbol Club, Nilvorimia FK, Skinnskattebergs FF, Portimao Panthers, FC Kladdakorna, Phoenix Rising, Granada Club and Drogueltano Public.

Round of last 16:

The AntiChrists 2-0 Phoenix Rising (Exton ’41, Davis ’80)
The Corleone Family 2-1 FK Ariljac (Aganzo ’25, Kallson ’77) (Ceh ’91)
Samba Juniors 2-0 Drogueltano Public (Dias ’13, Mong ’46)
Montauk Monsters 0-0 CRESTA UNITED (Monsters win 6-5 on penalties)
Smokin Aces 1-2 Trujillanos Fútbol Club (Travado ’56) (Unesson ’78, Johnsson ’91)
FC Kladdakorna 2-0 Skinnskattebergs FF (Roque ’55 ’91)
Nilvorimia FK 0-2 Portimao Panthers (Viveiros ’58, Shorrock ’91)
tap n spile f c 1-1 Granada Clud (Deeney ’60) (Chadwick ’49) (tap n spile win 4-3 on penalties)

Former top flight side FK Ariljac found themselves up against the team that won the title during their one season in the top flight and also the one they beat to the Division 1 title, and The Corelone Family dispatched them to move into the quarter finals.

Quarter Finals

Samba Juniors 1-2 The AntiChrists (Dias ’73) (Pawlowski ’11, Matern PEN ’20)
The Corleone Family 1-0 Portimao Panthers (Vanberg ’31)
Trujillanos Fútbol Club 2-4 Montauk Monsters (Dennison OG ’19, Toris ‘69) (Anderson ’17 ’59, Keidel ‘’65, Morris ’91)
FC Kladdkakorna 3-1 tap n spile fc (Frias '11 '35, Wetterlund '49) (Hartman '77)

By far the most interesting cup tie was between Samba Juniors and The AntiChrists. Two former XCL winners going head to head with strong teams and it was The AntiChrists who took the lead when Josef Pawlowski fired them in front in the 11th minute. The AntiChrists doubled their advantage with a penalty in the 20th minute, but Samba Juniors were taking the game to The AntiChrists and making them work for it. In the end, Eduardo Dias’ 73rd minute header wasn’t enough and Samba’s bid to return to the XCL via a competition that their old side won many times before was over.

Elsewhere it was a struggle for The Corleone Family against Portimao Panthers, but in a game of few chances, Corleone made their one and only chance count and Portimao Panthers failed to score either of theirs. Tough break for the Panthers, good fortune for Corleone.

Montauk Monsters were involved in a thriller against Trujillanos Fútbol Club. Just two minutes after Duncan Anderson opened the scoring for Monsters, their captain Justin Deniison turned into his own net. Anderson put his team back in front and Torben Keidel made it 3-1, but they were pegged back again by Alvaro Toris ’69. Cedric Morris’ 91st minute effort however ensured Montauk Monsters’ passage to the semi finals. They were joined by FC Kladdkakorna who demolished tap n spile fc 3-1. It’s been a good run for tap n spile, but they fall at the quarter final stage.

Semi Finals:

The AntiChrists 0-1 The Corleone Family (Bardu ’76)
FC Kladdkakorna 2-0 Montauk Monsters (Wetterlund ’16, Farias ’75)

In a twist of fate, Kladdkakorna avoided both The AntiChrists and The Corleone Family, drawing Montauk Monsters in the semis. That wasn’t all however, as V1klund saw his quest for a league and cup double end at the semi final stage as his old team knocked him out. Corleone are really proving a challenge for The AntiChrists under the management of RSole. The injury to Liam Otway certainly didn’t help things for The AntiChrists, as he was their strongest midfielder who wasn’t over 30 and so Raimond Numan’s introduction shot up the team’s average age. In the end, Ovidiu Bardu’s 76th minute goal allowed Corleone to reach the final.

They will be joined by FC Kladdkakorna, who edged an end to end game against Montauk Monsters. Both sides created 6 chances apiece but Montauk failed to score any of them, Kladdkakorna keeper  Stig-Olof Hedblom having a strong game. Kladdkakorna opened the scoring through Emilio Wetterlund before Aarao Farias doubled the lead to hand Kladdkakorna a trip to the cup final for the first time. There will be a new name on the trophy this season. But a disappointing end to what has been a fabulous cup run for Montauk Monsters, who knocked out Currahee Valiants and Ljungskille Sportklubb on their way to the semis.

The Final:

So, the 43rd Hattrick League cup final would be between top flight side The Corleone Family and Division 4 side FC Kladdkakorna. In many ways this was a David vs. Goliath cup final, with Corleone the heavy favourites to win the cup. Indeed, Kladdkakorna must be the weakest cup finalist in years, their best player was 15 bar striker Aarao Frias while most of the players were between 12 and 13 skill. In contrast, The Corleone Family’s best player was 18 skill and they were around 3 bars stronger. But anything can happen in football...

FC Kladdkakorna

Kladdkakorna probably didn’t anticipate getting to a cup final this season. But they got their campaign off to a great start by thrashing Fish United 9-1 on aggregate. FC Ceahlaul Piatra Nea were next and they were just as easily disposed of. Real Madrid C.R.F. awaited in Round 4, but they lost 2-0 to Kladdkakorna. Barnarps IF were the 5th round opponents but they lost 2-0. The 6th round saw a very difficult test against Fight 4 Fame 2012, a very valuable side worth over 200 million econ and managed by former World Number 1 Briscarie, who won trophies in the Ultimate League with Xandria and F.C Sloga and reached the XCL Semi Finals. But Kladdkakorna edged it 1-0 and Pamada awaited in the next round. A 2-0 win saw Kladdkakorna into the last 16 but they weren’t going to stop there. Skinnskattebergs FF fell as Kladdkakorna moved into the quarter finals. Tap n spile fc lost 3-1 before the semi final against another surprise package, Montauk Monsters. But a 2-0 win ensured that Kladdkakorna would be in the final.

The Corleone Family

Corleone’s run to the cup final meanwhile was done under two different managers. They started their cup run in the 2nd round under V1klund and thrashed Flying Sausages 11-0 on aggregate. Safe to say, those sausages didn’t stay airborne for long. FC Fessi awaited in the 3rd round and proved to be a difficult task, they held Corleone to a 0-0 draw at their place. It took a penalty  shootout for Corleone to seal their place in Roun 4. Glenns Boys awaited in the 4th round which proved to be V1klund’s last cup match in charge that season,  a simple 1-0 win to ensure progression. Sparta Leipzig then were disposed of in the 5th round, but The Corleone Family were managerless for the sixth round tie against Los Nisu, a difficult tie given the latter were a Division 1 side, but they still managed to progress to the 7th round and RSole took charge from thereonin. His first cup match in charge was against Sheffield United FC and a narrow 1-0 victory saw Corleone up against FK Ariljac in the cup, a side only in the top flight last season. They won 2-1 and then beat Portimao Panthers by a single goal in the quarters. By far the hardest match of the run though was the game against The AntiChrists, which saw Corleone’s old manager bar his old club’s way to the final, but a narrow 1-0 win secured their place.

The two teams came out onto the main pitch of the Xpert Arena, lead out by Stig-Olof Hedblom and Jared Derbyshire. The referee for this match was Manuel Ficuz. FC Kladdkakorna opted for a 4-5-1 formation and surprisingly left out star striker Aarao Frias which Corleone countered with a 3-5-2 formation, using Cornelio Aganzo and Nicolai Sandel as a strike partnership

The game got underway. It was a timid and tight first half, with very little action of real note. Corleone looked the sharper outfit early on and things took a step up when Ashoory Shabi was talked by Eduardo Guimaraes in the 11th minute. The half wore on and despite fielding two “strikers” The Corelone Family were having difficulty creating chances against Kladdkakorna’s 4 man wall, in fact, one shot on target was all the team managed to muster.

Manuel Ficuz drew the whistle to his lips to signal the end of the first half, a first half that was surprisingly 0-0 at half time. Kladdkakorna were taking the game to The Corleone Family, David was standing up to Goliath.

The second half got underway and it was yet more frustration for Corloene, they were still having real difficulty breaking down Kladdkakorna’s 4 man defence. McCulloch, Guimaraes, , Sundberg and Asmundsson were proving to be comparable to the Great Wall of China. The frustration soon crept in to Corleone as Ashoory Shabi was booked.

Sensing they might be able to get something from this, Kladdkakorna substituted on their main main. Aarao Frias was on for Olivio Roque and all of a sudden The Corleone Family had a dangerous striker to take care of. Kladdkakorna did draw the ire of Ficuz though who decided to give Emilio Wetterlund and Al McCulloch two yellow cards. Full time arrived and the score was 0-0, a hard fought effort from Kladdkakorna but they would need to hold out about 30 minutes to take the game to penalties.

The first half of extra time kicked off and it wasn’t particularly eventful, with a yellow card for Rodolfo Torro in the 102nd minute the most interesting part. Otherwise the game pretty much floweed in the same way. The second half however was dramatic. Within five minutes of the restart, Corleone were awarded a penalty. Unbelievable Jeff. Well you’d better believe it as Cornelio Aganzo had the chance to put his side 1-0 up and put a hand on the Hattrick League trophy. He did just that, Hedblom was left stranded as Corleone took the lead. Kladdkakorna’s resistance was broken, they had done so well against a much stronger side, but it seemed it wasn’t going to hold out.

Kladdkakorna’s woes increased when Bosse Agreas picked up a slight knock. While Aarao Frias looked lively since coming on, he just wasn’t getting any service from his teammates, who were having problems dealing with Corleone’s midfield.

As if that wasn’t enough, Corleone doubled their lead 3 minutes before the end of the match. A bit harsh on Kladdkakorna who didn’t deserve to lose 2-0, but when two quality players like Cornelio Aganzo and Gary Kallsson combine against a Division 4 side, there was very little that could be done about it.  Young striker Torsten Zetterlund came on in the last minute for a brief cameo before it was confirmed, Corleone Family were Hattrick League Cup champions and have now won two trophies under two different managers.

The celebrations began in earnest. Lots of jumping around in excitement upon the final whistle, followed by the Hattrick League cup being presented on the pitch to Jarred Derbyshire, who lifted it triumphantly. Those in Black Shirts were heard to be ecstatic.

While all that was going on, we caught up with the new Corleone Family manager RSole who has only been in charge for less than half the season and yet already has a trophy to his name and, aso you will see in the future, made it to a pretty important game...

XD: Congrats on winning the Hattrick League Cup. You may not have been here for the whole season, but how do you feel about claiming your first piece of silverware in the official leagues?

RSole: I’m in two minds about it to be honest. I didn’t build the team, and I’m sure there are plenty of people who will be quick to point that out, but I did choose the line-ups and tactics. I’ll take some of the credit, but have to give most of it to V1klund for putting the team together and developing it through numerous seasons. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to choose the line-ups and tactics.

I’m sure V1klund is happy to see his old team picking up more silverware and I hope he gives himself a big pat on the back. He might even be regretting his decision to leave the club, although he did scoop the league title so maybe not.

XD: You picked the cup run from Round 7 onwards. From the 5 cup matches you played, which was the hardest?

RSole: There were two: The first cup game I played against Sheffield United FC and the semi-final against The AntiChrists.

The United game was difficult because it was my first real test as a manager at this level. I was full of self-doubt at the time… could I manage a team at the top level? Could I adapt to the way the top managers’ play? There were so many things going through my head. I felt like I was under the spot light a bit because I had come from division 5 and thought if I lost to a weaker team and crashed out of the cup people would be hitting the forums criticising the X11 loyalty bonus system for allowing yet another lower division manager take over a top club. Of course, I’m no ordinary lower division manager, but only I knew that at the time!! :d Thankfully I won the match.

The semi-final against The AntiChrists was really tough because they had a stronger team and have one of the top managers in the game at the helm in V1klund. Because he had only recently left my team I knew he knew more about the team than I did, and that’s quite a disadvantage. He is also much more knowledgeable about what tactics to play at the top level. In the end I figured the only way I could win the game was to try something different to the norm. It worked and the final beckoned…

XD: You have also had an incredible XCL run and will be facing fellow Scotsman Duffster in the final for a place in the Hall of Fame. Surely this must be the best job application you've made ever?

RSole: In terms of success in the official side of the game, yes, but I’ve never played X11 to be ranked No. 1 or win official titles. I play the game for fun and the banter in the private leagues. I’m really a team builder so this job is as far away from that as it’s possible to go. The best job applications I’ve ever made were all in private leagues. Top of the list has to be my team in the IW Premier League, where I’ve just celebrated 7 years in charge of my team. Then there’s my teams in the TBA league and EST Elite, where the laughs are non-stop. I’ve only been in these leagues for a short time but the fun and banter have renewed my love of the game, which had faded fast after a fall-out saw me and a host of other managers leave the House of Trouser. Since I’m name dropping private leagues, I’m going to mention the ultra-active World Select and the Scottish Elite, home of Scotland’s elite managers… although none of the top 5 Scottish managers currently play in the league... maybe we should change the league’s name.

Yeah, so, what was the question? Oh yes… like you say, the XCL run has been incredible and I’m sure no one ever expected us to get this far, including me. Meeting Duffster in the final will be the pinnacle of my X11 career. He’s a manager I’ve admired since I joined the game and I’ve always kept an eye on how he’s doing in the rankings. He’s by far Scotland’s best and most successful X11 manager so I would say he’s the X11 equivalent of Jock Stein. You thought I was going to say Ferguson didn’t you? Stein was better!

I don’t think I’ve ever played Duffster so it’ll be great to pit my wits against him and I think with us both being Scottish there’ll be a really good atmosphere surrounding the game. I don’t think we’ll see any toys flying from prams or dummy spitting tantrums from the loser. We’re Scottish so we’re used to being gallant losers. This time Scotland will triumph whatever happens so I will be almost as delighted for Duffster if he wins as I would be if I win. I’m sure Duff would say the same, especially since he’s already in the Hall of Fame.

I’d love to see my name in the Hall of Fame. Not for the glory or bragging rights, just because I’ve found my username amusing ever since I came up with it and seeing it in the HoF would only add to that.

XD: The second leg of the XCL semi final was a very nervous affair. Did you watch the game? If so, what did you make of the last 5 minutes when ChrillzmeisteR seemingly scored before the flag went up?

RSole: I never watch the games until after I’ve seen the result! Well, I did do it once for a cup final I was in, but I lost the game and blame it on watching the match and not going straight to the match report! I’m also far too impatient and my bowel isn’t quite as strong as it used to be. I’m really glad I didn’t watch this match… stains in my pants would’ve been a massive understatement! (For the benefit of TBA & EST readers that’s underpants, not trousers)

Chrille was unlucky. I’m not going to pretend that my tactics were responsible for the win because they wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference if his cr hadn’t been on the morning of the match. His team are so strong that there’s no way we could’ve competed. ChrillzmeisteR look like they have a very strong home advantage stat so they struggle a bit away from home maybe, but at home they seem to be pretty much unbeatable. I’m sure next season Chrille will make sure he puts the semi-final out of reach in the first leg so that the cr doesn’t affect his progression to the final. And yes, I fully expect him to make the final next season because his team are so strong.

The offside goal is just one of those things. It happens to us all and it’s one of those things that makes the game that little bit more realistic. It brings out passionate responses from us. At the end of the day, for every chance created in the game there are numerous things that can happen. If a goal is scored then some sort of randomiser thing kicks in to decide if it stands or gets chalked off. In this case it was disallowed. Good for me, bad for Chrille. It’s just how the game works and I’m sure most would agree that it’s a good part of the game. My opinion may have been different if it had been me who had the goal disallowed though!!

XD: Obviously the league campaign was already a tall order from when you took over, but can Corleone win a second title next season?

RSole: Yeah, when I joined I knew the league was pretty much gone because we were 6 points behind. I did have a chance to get 3 back in the head to head with The Antichrists, but could only muster a draw, although I think we deserved the win. After that I knew the league was gone so concentrated on the cup because it was the only way left to qualify for the XCL next season.

We’ll still be one of the strongest teams in the top division next season so I think we will be up there fighting for the title.

XD: Thank you, and good luck for next season

RSole: Thank you and good luck to you too. My apologies for my responses lacking humour… I blame the questions. ;)

The Corleone Family 2-0 Walls of Babylon (Vanberg ’80, Aganzo PEN’87)
Black Lotus 2-1 The AntiChrists (Gonzalez ’51, Waring ’82) (Mino ’39)

Well, this was a highly unusual round for the Hattrick League in the XCL. Both V1klund and Chrille were involved, but not in the way you’d expect. Corleone Family were 2nd in the group, but went into this game without a manager. But they still emerged 2-0 victors over Walls of Babylon with goals from Egil Vanberg and Cornelio Aganzo to progress to the last 16.

So, how were V1klund and Chrille involved in this one? Against each other that’s how. The two Swedes had met three times in the Hattrick League previously, and typically one of the first few matches both managers had was against each other. Ivan Mino showed his former manager no favours by putting The AntiChrists ahead, but Black Lotus countered with a second half goal from Lucho Gonzalez before Drew Waring got the winner. Chrille 1-0 Chrille.

The Corleone Family 0-1 Duke Team XI (Rodolfo ’69)
The AntiChrists 0-0 Coh I Aelia Dacorum

The last round of the XCL Group Stage also happened to be RSole’s first XCL game in charge of The Corleone Family. That said it was a game in which they’d  already qualified… and Duke Team proceeded to take top spot off RSole’s side  with a single goal from Anton Rodolfo in the second half.

The AntiChrists meanwhile were involved in a dull 0-0 draw with Coh Aeila Dacorum. The match was a big one as the winner would go through to the next stage of the XCL unless Black Lotus lost of course, then it was a bit more complicated. In the end though, The AntiChrists progressed to the last 16 yet again. So who is in the last 16 for the Hattrick League sides? Well, The Corleone Family have unfortunately drawn the World number 1 manager 88gore88 and Fortuna Killiepitsch in the next round. That’ll be a tough one. V1klund93 also got a tough test as his team were drawn against Sonata Arctica, one of the teams that currently make up arguably the strongest official league right now.

The Corleone Family 0-0 Fortuna Killiepitsch
The AntiChrists 0-0 Sonata Arctica

The first legs of these matches weren’t particularly entertaining, with no goals to report.  Corleone were held at home by Fortuna Killiepitsch and likewise Sonata Arctica held The AntiChrists

Fortuna Killiepitsch 0-1 The Corleone Family (Shabi ’76)
Sonata Arctica 1-0 The AntiChrists (Aalbaek Nielsen ’92)

The second legs of these matches only had one goal in them, but they turned out very differently for both sides. The AntiChrists fell at the last 16 stage, a rare dropout for them at that stage given their XCL track record but given that it was V1lund in his first XCL in charge rather than Chrille, perhaps that’s understandable. The decisive goal was scored by Kim Aalbaek Nielsen in extra time. The two turned out to be very evenly matched.

While one Hattrick League side fell, the other succeeded, Corleone Family were much more inexperienced at XCL level than Fortuna Killiepitsch and managerwise 88gor88 had done it with Fortuna last season,  but in the end all that mattered was Ashoory Shabi’s 76th minute goal to ensure that The Corleone Family would reach the quarter finals of the XCL for the very first time. They were drawn against another side in their first XCL, Euro League champions Duke Team XI, who just so happened to have been in the same group as Corleone this season.

Duke Team XI 0-2 The Corleone Family (Gudfinsson ’48, Vanberg ’50)

So, which of these XCL debutants would make it to the semi finals, would it be Duke Team XI or would it be The Corleone Family? Well, The Corleone Family dominated the game and scored twice in three minutes not long after the second half began. Orylgur Gudfinsson opened the scoring in the 48th minute before Egil Vanberg doubled it. It’s not quite Robert Lewandowski standard but it will do. Duke Team’s problems were compounded when Maureo Idiakez was sent off, although that wasn’t going to affect next week’s second leg.

The Corleone Family 1-0 Duke Team XI (Kallsson ’15)

The Corleone Family were strong favourites to reach the semis after they beat Duke Team and continued the job when Gary Kallsson put the tie beyond doubt inside just 15 minutes. Duke Team failed to score a single goal over the two legs and Corleone were through to the XCL semi finals. They were just one of four teams left in the tournament. Their semi final opponents? Well, the whole Hattrick League merry go round has now come full circle as RSole would be facing the Chrille-managed Black Lotus in the semi finals.

The Corleone Family 1-0 Black Lotus (Shabi ’88)

The Corleone Family were coming into this game on the back of a change report, and up against a Black Lotus side who would also undergo a change report, albeit the week after. What’s more, RSole had a day to try and fix up form for the game, Chrille would have to play next week’s leg on the day of the Change Report. Incredibly however, they managed to win the game. In a situation like this they were going to need a helping hand and they got it when Bror Bjornsson was sent off for badly injuring Jarred Derbyshire. While Derbyshire was a bad player to lose as one of Corleone’s best defenders, they had cover on the bench in the form of Ricardo Ronaldinho and he slotted into the back three The man advantage paid off when Ashoory Shabi turned in Egil Vanberg’s pass and all of a sudden, Black Lotus are on the back foot for the second leg.

The ChrillzmeisteR 2-1 The Corleone Family (Pardal PEN ’11, Trave ‘34) (Aganzo PEN ‘8)

This time it was the turn of the newly rebranded The ChrillzmeisteR to have a change report. And this turned out to be one of the most epic semi finals of all time. The action got underway very quickly when The Corleone Family, already with a goal advantage in the tie, were awarded a penalty. This was exactly the scenario that Chrille wouldn’t have wanted, but it was perfect for RSole’s side and Cornelio Aganzo fired past the intimidatingly strong Nediljko Rujkovcani to make it 1-0 to The Corleone Family. ChrillzmeisteR now needed to score three goals to go through to the final and in a dramatic turn of events, were awarded a penalty three minutes after going behind. Alvito Pardal is probably one of the best defenders in X11 today and he tucked away his penalty past Suso Santana to ensure that Chrillz had a foothold in the game. They got a second goal when Candido Trave scored in the 34th minute to level the tie up, however, as things stood, Corleone Family would be going through to the final. If Chrillz scored just one goal however, everything would change.

All round midfielder Lucho Gonzalez came on for Chrillz at half time but it was Corneone Family who had the chances as the second half got underway. Chrillz came into the game though and began banging on the door. Could Corlene actually get to the final just under two months after RSole took the job? Hearts sank when Silva Gilberto finally found the back of the net in a very nervy finish… however in a dramatic twist the goal was ruled out for offside. The ChrillzmeisteR players have already picked up the habit of arguing with the ref over decisions and they protested furiously over this one. In the end, Chrillz could not find the goal they needed to reach the final and the curse of the Master League continues, while The Corleone Family are in the XCL Final. Unbelievable, it would be an all Scottish final

Transfers:

Corleone Family surprised everyone when their top scorer from last season, Belarmino Merouco, who was key in their title win last season. 16 year old Torsten Zetterlund was signed as his replacement, seemingly to try and reduce the average age of The Corleone Family and make them a more viable long term competitive prospect.

The AntiChrists also signed a new player midseason, as 16 year old defender Heinz Mittermayr joined to help reduce the team’s average age in defence, and the new defender could yet form the cornerstone of the team’s future. They also added striker Marvin Bolam to the side to fill the void left by Paulo Cassiano’s departure at the beginning of the season. Both players will be in the team’s squad next season though Marvin Bolam has announced he will retire at the season’s end. Stuart Carrick won’t be continuing with The AntiChrists though as he was sold to FC Strovelstrov for 6 million econ.

Manager changes:

After V1klund shocked The Corleone Family fans by moving to The AntiChrists, attention turned to replacing the long time manager. In the end, the replacement came out of left field, as they hired the relatively unknown manager RSole to take over the job.

After the season ended, following relegation from the Hattrick League, Stavie manager Augustinus decided to resign from his team and move to Euro League Division 4 side The Others. His replacement was Black-cobra, who left former Dream League champions EX6 to join his new side.

And so ends the era of the rivalry between The AntiChrists and Bolt Thrower. It has been the story of the last 8 seasons in the Hattrick League and has formed a significant part of its history, It’s hard to imagine the Hattrick League without it, but both teams have nearly run their course and as they embark on new ventures under Sir_Lee and V1klund93, the Hattrick League is set to embark on an interesting new era. One where The AntiChrists might still win titles, but there will be a new name on the receiving end.
